The Irish Loop is named after the area's dominant ancestry. But you'll find more than just Irish culture. From whales, trails, seabirds, fossils, and more, the Irish Loop is the perfect road trip to start from St. John's.

Here are some of our favourite stops along the way:

1. Witless Bay & Bay Bulls
After leaving St. John's, head to Witless Bay, Bay Bulls, or Mobile to catch a whale and bird watching tour.

2. The East Coast Trail
The Irish Loop has some of our most scenic hikes. Historically, people used coastal trails to travel between communities -- that's why we have the East Coast Trail. Ranging from easy to strenuous, every trail comes with a stunning view.

3. Calvert & Ferryland
On your way to Ferryland, stop into Calvert for a traditional kitchen party at Sullivan’s Songhouse. When in Ferryland, one of the oldest European settlements in North America, check out the Colony of Avalon, a 17th century archaeological dig site, before heading to the Ferryland lighthouse for a coastal picnic.

4. Mistaken Point
Next, check out the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Mistaken Point to view rare fossils from 575 million years ago, that show the oldest-known fossils of complex multicellular life on the planet.

5. St. Vincent’s Beach
Want to lounge on a beach while majestic humpback whales feed 20 feet away? Stop into St. Vincent’s Beach on your journey through the Irish Loop.

That's just the beginning. Learn more about the Irish Loop here: https://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/trip-ideas/road-trips-landing/avalon/irish-loop

You've probably heard that Cape St. Mary's and Witless Bay are hotspots for birdwatching. But did you know that some of the best birdwatching is actually found in Central Newfoundland?

Here are some of our favourite off the beaten path birdwatching spots:

1. Baie Verte Peninsula
Start your day in La Scie, spotting Northern Waterthrush, Pine Grosbeaks, and enjoying the coastal views.

2. Grand Falls-Windsor
Visit the Corduroy Brook Nature Centre to see Tree Swallows and American Bitterns.

3. St. Alban's
Scan the mudflats for shorebirds and explore the back-country for Mourning Warblers and Yellow-bellied Flycatchers.

4. Notre Dame Bay
Experience Cottlesville’s photogenic forest and coastal habitats, and enjoy the sweet songs of the Yellow Warblers, Swainson's Thushes, and Fox Sparrows.
