A few weeks ago we proudly co-hosted a few days of outdoor leadership training for educators.

The annual MTS PD Day is a day where all educators in Manitoba participate in professional development and grow in skills, community connection, and gain ideas for their classroom teaching.

Building upon last years flood of interest for practical outdoor leadership skills and certification we put together courses for a number of key certifications to help with meeting the requirements of MPASS in schools.

Although it was late October, our professional team of experienced hiking and paddling instructors made the days fun and engaging through the cool temps and cutting wind.

At the end of the event we had 40 educators participate in various training.

A huge thanks to for co-hosting with us at their beautiful venue so close to Winnipeg.

Also a huge thank you to for entrusting us to provide high quality training for their community of educators.

🏹 ARCHERY 🎯

Did you know that we offer S.A.F.E Archery as part of our program offering?!

When you book a Corporate Teambuilding, School Outdoor Ed, and even custom group events at a suitable venue, archery is part of the options you can choose from.

We want to give a huge thanks to who joined us this past week for a fun Group Teambuilding experience as well as the many others who enjoyed archery this year.

S.A.F.E. Archery is a “non lethal” version (blunt tips with velco disks) that can be facilitated indoors as well as outside. With a suitable space in a gym, large Church basement, or community space, we can accommodate your group. Reach out to us for a fun and dynamic indoor activity this winter.

This week we wrapped up our summer season with a fantastic day tour with on the historic Winnipeg River.

This was fitting conclusion with warm temperatures, calm waters and an eager group to paddle with.

💥Clipper Bay Camp💥

Formerly “Whitesfish Bay Camp”, is one of the first and most renowned fishing lodges on Ontario’s Lake of the Woods.

This rustic island camp was acquired by some old friends and is currently going through a remodel and revisioning. With a unique focus on families and group retreat, this incredible place will be a gateway for many memories to made between parents and kids.

In between programs during this busy summer, we took a family trip to to check it out and spend quality time with our children.

We canoed fished, hiked, picked wild blueberries, sat in the hammock, kayaked, swam, and explored many of the nearby islands.

We are super excited for this place to develop and become a true family retreat camp. The sunsets alone are worth the drive and boat ride to this world class fishing destination!

Do you have foundational outdoor skills?

The answer is often “yes, I can survive” 💪

What if there was a next level where you felt confident in your skills and ability to handle pretty much anything??

There are 2 factors when it comes to outdoor know how…

🧭 Practical Skills.

✅ Practical Experience.

Both go hand in hand and often we find many folks with one more than the other. Let me explain…

Many will participate in a canoe skills clinic, workshop, or course. Get the cert paper saying they can paddle and do it safely in the right conditions. Once the wilderness environment throws waves, wind, heat, cold, bugs, group dynamics, wildlife, and so forth at you the scope of your skillset gets drastically pushed…sometimes beyond our knowledge of what to do or how to do it. Judgement and managing risks is generally not where it needs to be and this is where mistakes can take place.

The other side of the spectrum are those who haven’t taken any skills courses but have “canoed for many years”…or more! This is great to have some experience in varying conditions, however often the basic fundamentals of paddling, camping, packing, organizing, and so forth are developed out of habits that can be more exhausting, inefficient, and damaging to themselves and the environment. Not always, but we see it quite a bit on our backcountry travels.

Remember you only know what you know! Having a balanced approach of skills training from certified instructors travelling in a wilderness context where you can practically grow in those skills while on a trip is the most valuable and impactful. Your knowledge and experience simultaneously grow together!

This summer we completed our multi-year pilot program of stacked outdoor courses for both beginners as well as a few cohorts of outdoor leaders in both Manitoba and NW Ontario.

We’re so thankful for all the hard work of , the , and .ca for their contributions to the Canadian outdoor sector and strengthening our ability to provide holistic outdoor skills and leadership training here in the province of Manitoba!

One of the busiest components of our 2024 paddling season was the increased amount of canoe skills courses.

We facilitated 9 courses this year developing relationships with nearly 100 amazing folks!

Paddle Canada canoeing courses are the foundation of day canoeing and overnight canoe tripping in both the front country and wilderness contexts.

Participants experience a journey of both learning new paddling techniques and protocols as well as hone in on existing ones….sometimes we have to work on breaking bad habits that inhibit smooth and efficient paddling :)

Regardless of age, experience, or background, our courses bring a wave of fun and joy into the journey for everyone. We strive to empower and inspire a continued path of learning.

💥WOW!💥

WHAT. A. SUMMER!!

This summer weather is holding on tightly and it’s hard to believe that the season keeps on rolling. ☀️🏖️

We purposely took a social media break to focus solely on our amazing guest groups, collaborators, and time with our families.

This spring/summer season was our busiest since we launched Wilderland. We had the absolute privilege of hosting just over 40 incredible groups of students, visitors to Manitoba, corporate teams, families, Church groups, and community organizations.

This translated to almost 1,300 folks joining us for a paddling tour…and more! 🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶

We are so grateful to our community who trusted us with your summer adventure! We are blown away at the immense passion to learn and willingness to challenge yourselves to grow your skillsets and experience new things.

As always, we strive to provide high quality programs led by Manitoba’s most experienced and dynamic outdoor leaders. 💪

We still have a number of events on the schedule to close out the paddling season so we’ll slowly get back into connecting more with you.

It’s been a wild ride the past 6 years. Even more so the past 6 weeks. We’re so grateful for all the support from all of the individuals, groups, and organizations that we’ve built trusting relationships with.

Our aim has always been and will continue to be about building up and strengthening the Manitoba outdoor sector. We’re so honoured to be part of the many stories of outdoor leaders growing in their skills and personal work whether it be in schools, summer camps, or elsewhere.

We faithfully help schools, churches, community organizations, corporate teams, and families experience authentic and unique outdoor learning and adventure. This brings us joy.

As we enter into a busy summer of guided tours, camps, courses, and more we’ll be taking some time away from social media.

Social media has been a major distraction and not at all where we gain our value or identity. We simply don’t have time to “post” things while we’re on the go and regularly in the field. Sure we enjoy sharing what we’re up to, but it’s really not a priority.

We may throw out there some things when we get a minute or share about our available courses and such, but we’re fully booked for the summer and simply need to focus on our amazing guests the next few months.

In fall we’ll be back with more events, promotions, and a bunch of exciting news to share!

Summer started with a 💥bang💥

A full week of staff training and development for local youth serving organizations.

A huge thank you to our partner organizations as we collectively serve kids and families throughout Manitoba. Our time last week was enjoyable and rewarding for us as we strive to inspire and empower young leaders from many different backgrounds and cultures.

We had a whirlwind of paddling this past week. 8 groups in 8 days where we hosted over 220 students for voyageur canoeing, Metis heritage learning, and all the fun and games with our amazing team.

We LOVE our local camps. Each year we donate a few day tours to our partner camps to help them grow their fundraising and networking efforts.

This week we hosted a wonderful family that participated and won an auction price with .

We started off with a light breeze and sunny skies that eventually turned to overcast, cooler temps, and moderate wind.

We’re thankful for our summer camp community and all the fun, learning, and exploration that they provide for so many children and youth each summer. A special shout out to the ministry camps who have been so faithful to their mission.

We are Wilderland Adventure Company, Manitoba’s newest outfitter. Our story stems from the numerous adventures we found ourselves in during the past 15 years exploring and travelling through the vast wilderness of this great province we call home. We’ve hiked, canoe tripped, camped, snowshoed, and explored through most of the province. As we continued on, we found ourselves working at summer camps and for local outfitters building up experience, obtaining skills certifications, and now able to offer fantastic wilderness trips into the areas we’ve come to know.

We believe that the wilderness is a place for everybody! We have developed trip packages to meet any experience level as well as special programs that include weekend base camping programs for larger groups and families, as well as an offering of Manitoba’s first formal outdoor leadership training.
