It’s a bittersweet announcement, but after 5 seasons Twin River Travel has run its last summer of canoe trips. Co- founder Tristan and I have both taken on new opportunities and can no longer continue running a seasonal business.

Twin River Travel was founded in late 2016 when we were two university students looking for a summer job. We didn’t know anything about running a business, but we loved canoeing and wanted to share the experience of a canoe trip with Manitobans and tourists from around the world. Over the past 5 years, Twin River Travel has given us opportunities to do some incredible trips, work with awesome guides, and meet great people. People who want to spend multiple days canoeing tend to be the type of people we like to be around, and our guests have been nothing short of fantastic.

We’re especially thankful for the opportunities Twin River Travel has given us to connect with the Indigenous paddling community. These connections have led us to work with colleagues to develop Waterways, an Indigenous not-for-profit that promotes, develops, and runs culturally focused canoeing programs in Indigenous communities across Manitoba. Tristan and I will continue to stay connected to the canoeing industry through work at Waterways. We would encourage you to take a look at their page and donate if possible.

We have already taken our website offline but our social media pages will remain online, so please reach out if you have any questions about canoe tripping in Manitoba. Thanks for all the support, and special thanks to our guides over the years, Liam, Garrett, Alex, and Maddy.

As summer gets underway, our partner organization is undertaking a year full of amazing land based canoe programs for Indigenous youth across Manitoba. There is an exceptionally high demand from communities around the province and they need your help to reach as many youth as possible! Please see their fundraiser below and help however you can!

Donate to Waterways and help our rivers flow freely; support Waterways and our vision of Improved health and wellness for Indigenous youth, empowered and connected to identity, culture, language, and land. Donate via Funrazr at the link in the bio!

We're booking trips for small groups and household groups this summer!

Our trips follow all provincial guidelines as well as our own Covid protocols including enhanced social distancing rules and mask wearing for food prep and riskier activities like portaging (narrow hiking trails).

If you have questions about what trips are allowed under current restrictions or what our protocols are, just phone us at 204-771-8714 or email [email protected]

We have 3 spots left on the Bloodvein River trip!

Why should you come on this trip from July 3rd to 16th? The Bloodvein is a once-in-a-lifetime canoe trip on one of the most iconic rivers in Canada. The river is in Pimachiowin AKi, a region of immense cultural and natural heritage, relatively untouched by industrial development. The river itself is mostly calm paddling, with the occasional rapid ranging from easy class 1, to full on waterfalls. Under the care of a professional whitewater guide and instructor, you will have the opportunity to learn whitewater skills and the knowledge needed to avoid dangerous rapids or falls. What's more, you'll be in great company. We have an awesome group of guests already booked and lead guide to keep you safe and well-fed on the trip.

This trip does not require high level whitewater skill. If you are unsure whether you would be ready for a trip like this, just give us a call and we can discuss ability levels and the trip difficulty.

Travel Manitoba recently released this video naming Pimachiowin Aki one of the "7 Wonders of Manitoba". The area is part of a UNESCO world heritage site along the East Coast of Lake Winnipeg that is largely untouched by industrial development. The area is a mixed heritage site for both it's natural heritage, and the cultural knowledge that the land holds and protects for the Anishinaabe communities in the area. This video focuses on the Natural heritage aspect (I'm guessing COVID restrictions made it hard to film people) and even we learnt some new things about the incredible ecosystem that is protected within Pimachiowin Aki! Worth a watch.

We're excited to explore the region again on our Bloodvein trip this July!

Excited to announce we will be running a Bloodvein trip this summer! This has been in the works for years, and it's awesome to finally be offering this trip.

The Bloodvein is a world famous whitewater river right in our backyard, in some of the most beautiful and well protected boreal-shield landscapes in the world. The river is in the heart of the new Pinachiowin Aki world heritage site and on the territory of the Bloodvein Anishinaabe nation. The trip is fly-in on a float plane, and drive out with a pick-up shuttle back to Winnipeg.

The trip is 13 nights from July 3rd to 16th and costs $4500 per person. Contact us to get info about booking and to put your name down for a spot!

Canoeing word of the day: "Duffer". Duffer is the name for the position in the middle of the canoe. It's a coveted spot because it means all you have to do is sit back, relax, and pass around snacks!

Relax, fish, swim, and eat!! These pics were sent by from her Seagrim Lake trip last week. It's always a pleasure to guide Seagrim, such a relaxed trip with so much time for blueberry picking, swimming, fishing, or simply admiring the unspoiled natural beauty around you!

Although tourism is our focus, Twin River has increasingly been asked to do programs in indigenous communities across Manitoba. Our business is small and is optimized for small groups of tourists, so we were never able to fulfill the demands for programming with youth. That's why, when the opportunity presented itself to work with a group of indigenous paddlers to start a not-for-profit focused on canoe programs for indigenous youth, we jumped at the chance. Waterways is the organization we have helped create. It is completely seperate from Twin River and we are only a small part of this larger organization, but we are still proud that we have been able to help. The power of canoeing to connect cultural and land based education with recreation and health is huge. The organization is focused on running programs, helping with fixing/purchasing equipment, and training community leaders to carry on programs into the future. Follow, donate, and share!

If you’re looking to shake things up a bit this summer, maybe a private, guided paddling trip to the remote wilderness of Manitoba is just what you’ve been searching for!

I think it’s safe to say that we’re all more than ready to be free of the confines of our homes and get outside to enjoy some fresh lakeside air. And thanks to the fairly sedentary lifestyle we’ve been living over the last few months, many are looking for a bit of an active escape from what’...

Out of Province travel plans cancelled? Why not stay close to home this year? We're offering private guided canoe trips for small groups in the Manitoban backcountry. We have availability throughout July and August and have discounted rates for families with kids. You don't need to cross the border to experience world class wilderness and have guided adventure fun with close friends or family.

We have changed our season dramtically to be as covid safe as possible and will be practicing diligent social distancing and hygiene throughout our trips. Safety has always been seriously important in a backcountry setting and this new safety challenge is taken no less seriously.

Email us at [email protected] or call Sam at 204-771-8714 to chat about a trip for you.

Covid-19 Update

Hello everyone, we’ve really appreciated how understanding, patient, and supportive everyone has been over the past 2 months. It has not been an easy time for the tourism industry and I know that our problems pale in comparison to what other people have been going through. We are lucky to be safe and healthy personally, and we have spent a long time thinking about how we can run our season while making sure we don’t put ours and other people’s safety and health at risk as well.

For that reason we have completely overhauled the way we run our season and what our trips will look like. In 2020 we will not be running any of our usual trips and we have cancelled all our previously scheduled itineraries. Instead, our 2020 season will consist exclusively of private family/group trips in order to minimize social interaction between different groups. We will have enhanced hygiene, handwashing, and social distancing protocols, we will be limiting stops in gateway communities, and we will no longer be offering a shuttle service to and from Winnipeg.

Full details on how to book a trip are available at our website

COVID-19 Update: We are currently not accepting new online bookings until we get further guidance from the provincial government regarding restrictions on our season. We are hopeful we will be able to run trips this season but there will be serious changes in itineraries and trips in order to be covid safe and comply with regulations. We are taking this very seriously especially given the at-risk rural and indigenous communities that we travel through.

If you are interested in travelling with us please email us directly at [email protected]. We hope to have detailed information by the start of June. Our season this year will be restricted to July/August in order to have time to implement covid safe procedures/protocol. We hope to see you out there this season, and for the meantime stay safe and enjoy the outdoors safely if possible!

As children, our growing brains are fascinated by everything around us. For those of us lucky enough to grow up outside the urban sprawl, our childhoods are spent exploring the forest, rivers and lakes of our backyards. As we grow up, we slowly become accustomed to these experiences. The forested ar...
