On Thursday evening, Jerome Wilson got a call from the sea. It was his friend, Capt. John Baker.

The Fortune Pride had a full load of silver hake aboard and was steaming for Riverport.

“He hadn’t been in Riverport for a while, so he was going to wait until morning and steam up the river in the light,” remembered Wilson, who does mechanical work on fishing boats.

“Wanted me to meet him there, check a few things over. He was happy. There was no indication he expected trouble.”

There were three metre swells, 60 kilometre an hour southerly winds and a soup of snow, rain and fog that would have shrouded Baker’s view from the wheelhouse.

But the Fortune Pride was a steel 65-footer that had recently passed inspection, manned by an experienced crew who’d seen much worse.

“If you said John Baker’s name on any wharf in Atlantic Canada, they’d know who you were talking about,” said Wilson. “He was a legend, one of the best.”

For all but a few, the Scotian Shelf in February is as unfathomable as the moon. There is a harsh beauty and comradery of shared adventure that’s known by those who draw a life from it.

The worry and pain belongs to those onshore.

“I’ve never felt a pain like this in my life,” said Rejeanne Hollett on Sunday, who went from planning her wedding to crewman Phil MacInnis on Thursday morning to planning his funeral that evening.

“I would give anything to have him back. Anything.”

At 10:06 p.m. on Thursday, two-and-a-half hours after Baker called Wilson, Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre Halifax received a distress signal from the Fortune Pride’s emergency position emitting radio beacon.

Whatever went wrong had happened fast; no mayday was received from the Fortune Pride.

A Cormorant helicopter and a Canadian Forces Hercules plane headed for the Shelf. Canadian Coast Guard vessels Hare Bay and Sir William Alexander pounded toward the radio beacon.

The Hare Bay, a Sambro-based lifeboat, found the three immersion suit-wearing crew and plucked them from the North Atlantic. They’d been in the water for over an hour.

MacInnis would not survive.💔

Capt. Baker’s body was found and retrieved the following morning by a Cormorant helicopter.💔

Hollett has been reliving her life with MacInnis ever since.

“We met each other when we were 10 and I didn’t know it but he’d always said that I was ‘the girl of his dreams,’” said Hollett. Life happens to 10-year-olds. They grew up, had families and separations.

Ten years ago, Hollett went out with friends to Bobbleheads Pub and Eatery to celebrate her birthday. MacInnis was working the bar.

“When we first met, I was in a really bad place, it was not OK,” said Hollett. “He wasn’t OK either. The two of us managed to fix each other up and build an amazing life.”

MacInnis, who had his own son, found room in his heart for Hollett’s two children as well.

“He loved my daughter and she loved him; he was very involved in her schooling, everything,” said Hollett.

MacInnis would end up working with Jerome Wilson, father to Hollett’s son (Jullian Wilson), on ships’ refrigeration systems.

About four years ago, he gave up life ashore for the high stakes on the Scotian Shelf. He found himself crewing under Baker, who’d chased about everything with fin or claws.

“He was the type of feller, everybody wanted him to have their boat,” said Philip Ryan. “Weren’t many times he didn’t come back with a full load of fish.”

Ryan’s father fished under Baker on the draggers. By the time Ryan started crewing on longliners out of Sambro in 1995, at 14 years old, Baker’s name was known on every wharf they tied up to.

He was one of the first commercial fishermen on the Scotian Shelf to earn his First Class Fishing Masters oceangoing ticket.

As Ryan progressed to become a captain himself, Baker was always there with old sea stories and guidance.

“He’d help anybody out at any time, show you what he knew he could show you, didn’t mind telling you where there was fish or where there weren’t fish,” said Ryan. “He was a good man that way, he didn’t keep it to himself.”

There were lots of stories.

Like a battle with a shifting load of sea cucumbers in a heavy swell aboard the Gentle Lady. It was December 2013, and they were 135 kilometres off Canso.

“We cleared her off three times but the last time I knew we were doomed,” Baker told The Chronicle Herald in 2017.

His attempt at a mayday got static in response; the antenna had been smashed.

The Gentle Lady listed hard to port and the water rushed in.

The crew would spend six-and-a-half hours floating in their life-raft on the cold, dark swell before getting picked up by the Clearwater Seafoods dragger Ocean Concord.

“I had a feeling somebody’s coming to get us. I said, ‘Don’t worry about it, boys,’” remembered Baker in 2017.

“My crew were excellent, were calm.”

Four years later, while the Ocean Concord was out on its final voyage dragging surf clams before being retired by Clearwater, Baker’s wallet came up in its trawl. It had been on the desk in the captain’s cabin of the Gentle Lady, beside an open window.

In it was the St. Christopher’s medal, patron saint of sailors, Baker’s mother had given him.

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the Fortune Pride’s sinking.

“John and his crew were confident in their skills and they were brave in that boat,” said Wilson.

On Sunday, Hollet’s son, Jullian Wilson, was thinking of what makes a good man as he becomes one himself.

Of all the ways MacInnis stepped up to take care of his mother and sister.

He remembered riding Harley-Davidsons with MacInnis down the shore. The pounding thrum of torque as MacInnis’s Fatboy accelerated out of a bend.

“I want him to know he can rest easy, I’ve got our girls now,” said Jullian.🤍🤍

Tiki Family,

As I prepared to drive to Yarmouth this morning, a friend messaged me and told me about the organization “Acts Of Kindness”.

These volunteers prepare meals every Saturday at the Youth Center or now the YACRO Hub Building, for anyone and everyone that needs it in the Southend of Yarmouth.

This is my community, I grew up here and at times as a child, I could have used a place like this. I immediately called them and asked if I could help today, they needed ground beef, cookies, rolls and anything I could bring.

I stopped at Costco and grabbed a few things and visited them this afternoon.

I met the volunteers and President and thanked everyone for doing what they do. Over 600 meals today alone! They warmed my heart and gave me the most humbling day of my life.

This is what I call “giving back” and I don’t mean what I did.

Thank you imaoksociety , for your service in such a time of need, I’ll be back!

Grab the girls and book this immediately!!!!!

We could not have asked for a better experience with Stefan and Valli! The drinks were reasonably priced, we were able to hook up our playlist to the speakers and dance around on the boat !
The boat has a washroom, bar and GOOD vibes !
1000000% recommend to anyone visiting Halifax or if you’re a local! Great idea for a bachelorette party!!!

What a great tour!

There’s nothing better than seeing a city from the water. Add on a floating tiki hut, great drinks, a great owner/captain and great friends to make a perfect trip.

If you asked me 8 years ago if I had ever been to NFLD, I would have said no. From 2017 to 2022, I had the incredible opportunity to spend months a year in Newfoundland and Labrador. These are some of the fondest memories of my former career.

There is something to be said about the kindness, warmth and welcoming feeling Newfoundlanders offer to the world. Last night’s Christmas Light Tour was like I went back in time and was driving the limousine around Marystown….thanks Kayla and family for the support!
