Today, February 17, is known as Family Day in New Brunswick and Islander Day on Prince Edward Island, a day off for people across the Maritimes to enjoy winter activities. ❄️

In Nova Scotia, the day is recognized as Heritage Day, and is an opportunity to honour the province’s history and the remarkable people who helped shape it. This year, Nova Scotia is honouring renowned Mi’kmaw activist Nora Bernard. As a survivor of the Canadian residential school system, Nora fought for compensation for fellow survivors. Though she didn’t live to see the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, her legacy lives on in the lives and policies she's shaped.

In honour of Black History Month, we’re sharing the amazing story of Rose Fortune, MV Fundy Rose’s namesake:

Born in 1774 to Black Loyalist parents who fled the United States for Atlantic Canada, Rose Fortune was a pioneering businesswoman. She began her career as a baggage carrier at the wharf in Annapolis Royal, eventually working her way up to her next role as a law enforcement officer at the Port of Annapolis Royal.

Today, Rose is widely regarded as the first female law enforcement officer in Canada… but her impressive legacy doesn’t end there. Her direct descendant, Daurene Lewis, made history in 1984 as the first African Canadian woman elected Mayor of Annapolis Royal.

You can read Rose Fortune’s full story on the display in the Rose Fortune Lounge aboard MV Fundy Rose (pictured below) or on our website: https://bit.ly/40gwslW

Tonight is Burns Night, celebrating the life and work of Scottish poet Robert Burns. If you’ve ever sung Auld Lang Syne on New Year’s, you’ve heard a Robbie Burns poem.

Throughout the Maritimes, but especially in Nova Scotia, you’ll find a strong Scottish influence in our culture, music and cuisine. So serve up yer haggis, neeps and tatties, pour a glass of Scotch and have a great Burns Night!
