Seed librarians, we want to hear from you! What supports, conversations, and resources would help your seed work?

This summer, we collaborated with the Community Seed Network, Seeds of Diversity Canada, and FarmFolk CityFolk to offer discussion sessions for seed library and community seed bank organizers in the US and Canada. The idea: Bring together folks working on initiatives to collect, exchange, and distribute seed within their communities.

We held two virtual Seed Library Organizer Sessions, where many ideas were shared and connections were made.

We don't want to end it here, so now we’re asking you: What do you want to see happen next? What would be most helpful for your work?

Please share your thoughts by completing this form:

The best way to store garlic is in a dry, room-temperature place such as a kitchen cupboard. If you store it in a cold, humid place (like a fridge) it will sprout!
This is confusing because it's opposite to onions, which store well in a cold and dry place.

The difference is that garlic sprouts when cold, and onions sprout when warm, which is why we plant garlic in the fall and onions in the spring. Now you know why, so you can remember how to store them both!

This summer, 117 Seeds of Diversity members are growing 29 varieties of Canadian tomatoes as part of our 2024 Community Seed Grow-outs. Our goal is to multiply and share as many Canadian varieties as possible.

These delicious Mennonite Orange tomatoes are an heirloom from Pennsylvania that was grown in Ontario since 1910. Seeds saved every year allow the variety to become regionalized, so we call it a Canadian tomato now.

Like snakes? Help them to their home-

Volunteers needed to take part in EALT annual snake relocation project
Since 2022, the Edmonton and Area Land Trust has conducted a relocation initiative for Red-sided garter snakes close to one of its conservation lands, maskihkîy meskanaw or Glory Hills. EALT was informed of a garter snake hibernaculum located just outside the boundary of Glory Hills Conservation Land in Parkland County.

The current snake den is next to a paved township road in the ditch, making snakes that move onto the road for warmth at risk of being run over. This snake den was unintentionally created when road access and a culvert were developed for the subdivision.

In collaboration with Alberta Government Species at Risk Biologists and an Alberta Conservation Association biologist and herptile expert, EALT created an artificial hibernaculum at the Glory Hills property in late summer 2022. In early fall, biologists and volunteers monitored the old hibernaculum for snakes returning to this location, trapped them, and relocated them to the new hibernaculum.

Results suggest that EALT has been successful in encouraging snakes to use the human-made hibernaculum. This was further corroborated by findings in Spring 2024 trapping sessions during the snakes' spring emergence. EALT is now recruiting volunteers to assist with the Fall relocation effort, which will take place from September 3 to October 11. https://mailchi.mp/ealt/february-volunteer-opportunities-bkk9jb42s0-17392852?e=3224277182

Hello Friends,

Our friend Maryann Borch passed away recently. We remember Maryann for being so many things. Community was at the core of her mission, as was supporting local food. She brought her many great qualities to share with us at Edmonton Seedy Sunday. It was joy for her to share her weaving knowledge with children and adults. Many of the children will remember visiting the wee goat she brought one year. We are really, really going to miss her.

Looking forward to this!

The 2024 Native Plant Garden Challenge has launched! By joining this Challenge, ANPC members dedicate as little as 1 m x 1 m of their gardens to native plant species that support pollinators and enhance the biodiversity of our local communities. These actions help educate others and more importantly demonstrate that our outdoor spaces are, and can be, an important part of our local ecosystems.

Note that we maintain a private page dedicated to this challenge, which is also open to the public: https://www.facebook.com/groups/532074481403507/

In addition, our new website includes a revamped Member's Portal with the Challenge resources - most importantly a toolkit on how to get started with your pollinator garden efforts and native plant supplier discounts!
https://anpc.ab.ca/?page_id=7244

More generally, the revamped ANPC website has sooo much more information about native plants in Alberta: https://anpc.ab.ca/
https://anpc.ab.ca/

We encourage you to actively participate in Challenge discussions and share your initiatives, your successes and your challenges. Your input and enthusiasm will be invaluable as we work together to achieve our goals. ANPC members have access to the Challenge Toolkit which you can access on the members only area of the main ANPC website. Non-members are welcome to participate by joining the page.

If you have any questions, ideas, or suggestions, please reach out to our facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/532074481403507/

Once again, global seed corporations are lobbying for big changes to Canadian seed that would benefit themselves at the expense of farmers, producers and the public.

Now is the time to take action to protect access to the seed we need! Your action as an informed farmer makes the difference.
