Excited to be a part of bringing this great Newfoundland talent to Lincoln on the weekend. Come check it out and “have a time” with Chef Ange The Florian Hotel Shanneyganock and The Band LadyLike

One rockin’ good time of course! The Town of Lincoln has teamed up with the Province of Newfoundland & Labrador to kick off the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games with Niagara’s most celebratory summer concert yet!

Still plenty of time to come get these views for yourself! Give us shout to set it up!

April 9. The 105th Anniversary of Vimy Ridge. A defining moment in our country’s history because of the courage of those who were there in 1917. A privilege for me and our team to have been there so many times in the last 15 years, with so many friends and families and all who came to pay their respects.

She carries herself so spectacularly, in all the seasons. We Will Remember Them.

Our third post of the virtual Belgium experiences, which we normally do in one day.

After visiting D’Hondt Farm, we head into and around Ypres. Stops usually include the German Cemetery at Langemark to remember that their young men died just as ours did; Vancouver Corner and the Brooding Soldier, where Canadian troops faced German gas for the first time; Tyne Cot - the largest Commonwealth First World War cemetery; Essex Farm, where Lt. Col John McCrae wrote “In Flanders Fields” in 1915 after witnessing the death of his friend Lt. Alexis Helmer; and the Menin Gate.

These are emotional and full days, and it is always important to give our students the chance to stop, reflect, smile, and enjoy a bit of chocolate from home thanks to the Newfoundland Chocolate Company

Then it is off to The Last Post Ceremony, held each evening at the Menin Gate in Ypres. This ceremony has been held every evening at 8 pm since November 11, 1929 with the exception of four years of German occupation between 1940 to 1944. We stand beneath the awe-inspiring Menin Gate, etched with the names of over 55,000 who fell and who have no known graves - Alexis Helmer among them. We Will Remember Them.

Our next “virtual” stop takes us to D’Hondt Farm near Ledeghem, Belgium to pay respects to the sacrifices of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in Belgium, and to honour Sgt. Thomas Ricketts, V.C.

Sgt. Thomas Ricketts, V.C. is the youngest Army recipient of the Victoria Cross fighting in a combatant role. He was a 17 year old private in the Newfoundland Regiment when he volunteered to go forward with his Section Commander, Lcpl Matthew Brazil and a Lewis gun to attempt to outflank the battery of enemy artillery that was causing severe casualties and holding up the advance. Advancing by short rushes under heavy fire at point blank range, their ammunition ran out while 300 yards away. Undeterred, young Ricketts doubled back 100 yards, got ammunition, returned to the forward position with the Lewis gun and was able to drive back the enemy into a farmhouse, closing off their opportunity to remove their field guns. His platoon advanced without casualties, captured four field guns, four machine guns and 8 prisoners.

Sgt. Ricketts was honoured by the King, who called him “a splendid boy.” Age 17, a boy who had quickly become a man. And who returned home to Newfoundland to become a pharmacist, and lived until 1967. His older brother George - who also served in the Regiment - rests in Europe, having been killed on the last day of the Battle of Cambrai in December 1917.

We go every year. The D’Hondt family still runs the farm, and takes care of the memorial. And in 2018, a real privilege to be joined by the grandson and great-grandsons of Sgt. Ricketts for the 100th Anniversary. They are a great family that has continued in the tradition of public service.

An amazing and moving visit every time.

Today our virtual tour takes us to Belgium. Normally we’d make many stops on this day; so much to take in - we are going slow it down for our online Pilgrimage and take a couple of days.

The Newfoundland Memorial at Kortrijk is our first stop, the fifth Caribou on our pilgrimage and the only one located in Belgium. This memorial commemorates all the Royal Newfoundland Regiment’s actions in Belgium in 1916, 1917 and 1918. Through those years, the Regiment fought at Langemarck, Poelcapelle, Keiberg Ridge, Passchendaele, Ledeghem and Vichte.

July 1, 2021 - the 105th anniversary of Beaumont Hamel and the Battle of the Somme. Today our tour would bring us back to learn more about the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and the awful slaughter that took place, and the courage and bravery of those who were there that day.

We also learn about other regiments that day, with a battlefield walk led by historian Andy Robertshaw and @ Frank Gogos , and a service in the mammoth Hawthorn Crater.

At 4:00 it’s the emotional memorial service at Beaumont Hamel, underneath the monument and amongst the trenches.

It’s also a chance to connect with friends from the Royal Scots, who have their own service on the Somme at Contalmaison in the morning, and join us at Beaumont Hamel in the afternoon. We finish with a visit with the local residents and their reception at Auchonvilliers.

We Will Remember Them.

2021 - It’s the second year we’ve not been able to get to France for the Trail of the Caribou Pilgrimage. But with things improving around the world, hopefully we’ll make it happen in 2022. So instead, for the next week we’ll post a virtual tribute based on past tours. Hope you enjoy this trip to the UK, France and Belgium. We Will Remember Them.

It’s April 9th and the 104th anniversary of Vimy Ridge. 2020 was the first year in over ten where we hadn’t been able to visit to remember those who served and those who gave their lives.

A remarkable place in all seasons and under all skies, built with such care and detail, to honour all Canadians who died in the First World War. It’s inscribed with the names of over 11,000 who died in France and have no known grave.

The grave shown in the pictures is that of Henry Littler, who died on April 9, 1917 at Vimy, and who is buried in Canadian Cemetery #2 on the site. Our honour to join his family there four years ago.

And a group of over 60 Newfoundlanders who made the “Trail of the Caribou” pilgrimage to France, Belgium, and the UK, with a visit to Vimy 100 years after, in 2017.

Hi friends - our "Sunday Brunches in Rome” continue this week!

This Sunday, April 11 at 10:00-11:30 EST - our guide Stuart will take us on a virtual walking tour to "Discover The Roman Forum” - the heart of the ancient city of Rome and its Empire. On Sunday, April 25 at 10:00-11:30 EST - we’ll explore “The Colosseum” - the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built and an iconic symbol of Rome. Home to gladiatorial contests, public spectacles, dramas and much more, we’ll see this remarkable stadium in all its remarkable detail and glory.

We have begun a virtual tour series to keep people connected with the travel we all love to do. And since we can’t take folks to many of our favourite places, we would like to bring them to you.

Our new program “Sunday Brunch in.....” adventure brings us to these favourite places and you can bring your favourite glass with coffee or latte, a mimosa, a Caeser...🙂

On Sunday, March 28 from 10:00AM -11:30AM EST - please come along with Stuart - our professional, certified, and entertaining Rome tour guide - for “St. Peter’s Basilica and The Vatican.” Given it will be Palm Sunday and a week before Easter, we thought it was a great time to explore this remarkable place.

Stuart will take us on a virtual 90 minute discovery of both St. Peter’s Square and the Basilica, with in-depth commentary and details sure to intrigue you even if you have been before. It’s a hosted tour - with video taken by Stuart, up close photos, and Stuart’s commentary live with us on Zoom. It's a real treat and you’ll have a chance to interact and ask questions too.

This tour - the best alternative to an in-person, onsite walking tour - is $25 CAD for one person on a computer, and $40 CAD for two people joining from the same computer. If there are additional people joining from the same computer, it is only an additional $15 per person.

Tour tickets can be purchased by following this link https://buytickets.at/wegotourexperiences

Let me know if you have any questions and we hope will see you in Rome on Sunday, March 28!

Cheers (and Ciao),

Greg
