One of the joys of getting out snowshoeing is the possibility to observe wildlife (or their tracks while on the trail.
One of the common birds that overwinter in the in the Canadian Rockies is the Gray Jay. Gray Jays, also known as the Canada Jay or Whiskey Jack, are members of the Corvidae family and are found across Canada.
They stockpile extra food in the fall to survive the winter months and may also try to steal your lunch if you’re not careful!

Have you seen or heard this bird when you’re out in the backcountry?

Snowshoes have been around for thousands of years and are one of the earliest human inventions.
In North American, snowshoes were the prime way to get around in winter for Indigenous peoples and early settlers. Many different shapes and styles of snowshoe were developed, with particular designs for specific environments and types of snow.

Did you know? 🌊🌊🌊
Tides play a big part in how you plan your route on the West Coast Trail and are integral to research before you start your trip! 👀
Certain parts of the beach trail become impassable at high tide and thinking through when to hit these areas at the right time is an important part of trip planning.
High tide times and heights change throughout the month so one person’s trip under a full moon 🌝 will look very different to another person’s trip a few weeks later.🌛
Are you interested in tackling this trail in 2025? We've got our preliminary dates up on our website and hope to have the trip times finalized soon. 🥾

One of the draws for hikers to the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island is the abundance of biodiversity in both the forest and seaside. At low tide, travellers can see a whole new world of underwater species!! 🦐 🐚 🌊
Two species commonly seen along the shoreline of the West Coast Trail are the Purple Star and the Giant Green Anemone.
The Purple Sea Star has a deep purple colour with a white, intricate, lace-like design. It is commonly found in tide pools and feeds on mussels, abalone and snails. ⭐
The Giant Green Anemone is also found frequently in tide pools along sandy or rocky shorelines. They use their tentacles to catch and paralyze prey and can live up to 30 years in captivity! Its green colour is the result of green algae growing on its tentacles.
We’re EAGERLY awaiting the news about our permit dates for our 2025 West Coast Trail Trips and WE CAN'T WAIT share this adventure with you!
