This Lion was the first of many big cats we saw in Kenya. It slowly walked past our vehicle at Lake Nakuru NP.

One of the first birds we saw after enteringthe Samburu National Reserve in Kenya was this family of Somali Ostrich. Somali Ostriches are more localized than the more widespread Common Ostrich which is found across much of Southern Africa. On the 20km drive to the lodge we also saw Reticulated Giraffes feeding on akaisha bushes along the roadside.

This Yellow-billed Oxpecker spends most of its time clinging to large mammals such as Wildebeest (pictured here), Zebras, Giraffes and Water Buffaloes. These birds pick parasites such as ticks off of the mammals body. In this way it benefits both species, the mammals parasites are kept under control, and the oxpecker gets a free meal.

With winter setting in, and most of our passerines moving south, we are looking ahead to the spring at Point Pelee. While most of the species we encounter at Pelee are migrants, some like this Blue-gray Gnatcatcher nest in the park itself.

Mountain Chickadees are often very inquisitive, dropping down to eye level to examine people in the forest. They are one of the three chickadee species we regularly see in Calgary. The others are the Black-capped Chickadee and the Boreal Chickadee.

One of the most common fall migrants in Saskatchewan is the Dark-eyed Junco. They can be found in pretty much in any stand of trees or shrubbery in early October. This individual is from the ‘Oregon’ subspecies which is less frequently encountered this far east on the prairies than the more common ‘Slate-coloured’ subspecies.

Pair of Thick-billed Euphonias . They are called this because they have a ticker bill than other euphonia species. This widespread species is found across Panama, Colombia and Ecuador and reaches the northern extent of its range in Costa Rica.

In the Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica we encountered this Fiery-billed Aracari on the grounds of Hotel Cristal Ballena.

This pair of Shining Honeycreepers were seen in Costa Rica. They are regular visitors to the feeding station outside the restaurant.

While birding along the trails of in Costa Rica’s pacific foothills, our group was treated to point blank views of this sharp looking Lesson’s Motmot.

Another highlight from our visit to was seeing a few Green-fronted Lancebills. They’re not the most colourful hummingbird, but are not widely distributed in Costa Rica. They are typically associated with forest streams which is exactly where we saw this one, at the base of a waterfall.
