Higher Trails Drill Team
Our Young Riders and some of our adults have been working very diligently on drill patterns. Here is a video (until the cell phone died). Great job everyone.
NiChi loving the water.
In the midst of a heatwave horses love cooling in the creek. Some even like a swim and roll.
Did someone say breakfast!
And we are all moved. We did some unpacking today then a group of our riders headed out to explore! First ride across the creek.
There has to be one more little bit of food in this pan.
Tonight we had a very interesting and somewhat tense (at times) veterinary procedure done on my Canadian mare - Uma. She has been having respiratory problems for quite a while now, and to date, we have not been successful with various medications. So we decided to go the next step - a Transtracheal Wash Procedure.
An incision is made directly into the trachea and a catheter inserted. The goal is to obtain an aseptically-collected diagnostic specimen from the lower trachea for:
Gram stain
Bacterial culture
Virus isolation
Some Viral Fluorescent Antibody (FA) tests
PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) tests
Parasitology (Lungworms)
Cytology
We had a couple tense moments, but Dr. Lawler was able to secure the samples needed and they will be sent to the lab tomorrow. This is the first such procedure done at Higher Trails, and, while the humans may have been stressed at times, Uma (being a tough Canadian) took it all in stride. A big thanks to Dee and to Madi T and Michelle for helping. Madi T handled Uma the entire time.
Clearing the hay yard.
Max's favorite job - getting the horses out of the hay yard. Love the wise old horses, Heat ran to the top and just stayed behind to graze while the others ran out!
Max takes his job seriously. Chasing the horse's out of the hay yard. His favorite thing. Notice Heat, hiding at the top. Wise old guy.
Young Riders coming back from a ride led by a 71 year old teenager. Great day and the smoke had cleared so the mountains filled the background.
Nothing like a good gallop to de-stress after a thunderstorm.
