Data shows that the fight for talent remains fierce as many continue to look for better offers, even if they have already accepted a role.

The Gartner Voice of the candidate survey analysis of nearly 3,500 candidates across the globe in May 2023 found that flexibility was the top reason for candidates accepting an offer, with the other top drivers being better work-life balance (45 per cent) and higher compensation (40 per cent).

Many organisations are recognising that just because something has always been done, it does not mean it is always the optimal route. Similarly to how the thought of fully remote work once made some uneasy, we are now looking at another solution: the necessity of recruiting employees based on their attitude rather than simply on their academic expertise.

Companies are increasingly migrating toward performance-based hiring methods. According to a recent study from Remote, skills-based recruiting has increased 63% in the past year, as more employers are favouring expertise over academic credentials.

Life constantly brings a mix of challenges and opportunities both at work and outside of it. Rather than simply focusing on academic accomplishments, companies should give importance to assessing candidates based on their capacity to address real-world problems and solve tasks. At the beginning of this month, Canada’s federal minimum wage rose from $15.55 to $16.65. This move was impactful, as Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) noted at the time, because “around 26,000 working Canadians earn less than $15.55 per hour.”

Coinciding with that minimum wage increase on a federal level, Canadians in more than half of the country’s provinces will soon see their minimum wage rates increase at a regional level.

As a community, we need to change our perception of what education and training look like and rapidly modify many long-held talent acquisition structures which were designed to focus on traditional higher education degrees as prerequisites.

This isn’t to say that the requirements for many critical jobs in our region which remain open and unfilled stipulating a minimum of a bachelor’s or master’s degree aren’t valid in their intent. In fact, there are jobs which require degrees for licensing or by mandate. Yet there are far more jobs, with high projected growth potential, which don’t have any such industry or legal requirement. Instead, these job prerequisites simply suffer from legacy language in outdated job descriptions and stale position postings – zombie job requirements.

I owe so much to Peter & Leslie Meingast; they took a chance on me. It was 1994 and I was the candidate who didn’t fit the ideal profile; yet, wouldn’t accept no as the final answer.

In my first few weeks on the job I knew I’d found my life’s work. I learned to fearlessly take that first step, even in face of uncertainty; to be impatient with inaction; know the goal and just GO!

Even in the 1990s, I knew technology would change HR. When LinkedIn hit the market, I sensed it was the beginning of a huge shift. HR Tech is my passion. The game-changing technologies are easy to spot and easy to implement; so, our focus will always bring HR, Recruitment & Tech together.

Roll the clock forward to today; I have read well over 100,000 resumes, interviewed well over 10,000 people and been directly involved in hiring over 3,800 people. And I never tire of hearing about people’s careers, learning about what companies do and understanding what’s important to them.
