Hi friends, As many of you know the BC Government has shut down all non-principal residents Short-Term rentals as of May 1st. Victoria seems like a ghost town with a lot less tourists around. Shops and restaurants are hurting bad. This has also had devastating affect on many people including Rosemary and me. We have an empty sitting condo costing us over $3500 a month. You can thank the BC NDP government for this stupidity. Remember that on voting date coming in October when you are thinking about who to vote for. I know who I will not be voting for. Our property rights group is fighting this government legislation and we have just had our first day in court with 5 more days scheduled on June 17th onward. I am posting below one of our Property Rights directors status report on the current actions being take.

On the side if you are visiting Victoria and you are a friend or family member and need a place to stay we can probably help you out so give us a phone call.

Thanks,
Gary (and Rosemary)

10,000+ votes on the Petition to the NDP Government to rescind Bill 35 banning short-term rentals and Section 36 stripping legal property rights was reached today and more coming. Everyone in BC should be concerned about the NDP Provincial Government ripping away legal property rights for legal short-term rental properties in B.C. in the guise of providing affordable housing. This misdirected NDP narrative will produce few if any affordable housing units due to the locations in the most expensive tourist areas of the cities. The tiny rental units that will barely house 2 people never mind a family or 3 or 4. More than 80% of these are single unit hard working B.C. owners. Most units will be sold off as long-term rentals will not support the operating costs and these units will be picked up for a song by high income singles who wish to live in the downtown tourist areas of the cities. Not just providing very few non-affordable units, this will harm hundreds of single unit owners who are operating legally zoned and licensed units specifically build for short-term rentals to support the tourist industry in towns like Victoria, Kelowna, Penticton, Vernon, Parksville and many more.
This petition shows people are not happy with this government action in removing legal property rights. We all want illegal rentals to be stopped, we all want affordable housing in B.C. The legal short-term rental operators have provided millions of dollars towards this helping to fund affordable housing developments, providing millions of dollars income to cities through tourism.
Voice your concern by writing to your MLA asking them to rescind Bill 35 and remove Section 36 removing property rights. Thanks, Gary and Rosemary

Hello everyone! I trust all is well with each of you! For today I just wanted to send this final request to those of you who are BC residents who would be willing to sign a PETITION ✍️(see further below) to the BC Legislative Assembly that is important to Gary and me and that must be finalized by end of day today!
As most of you know, we have been lawfully operating a very popular, fully legal, licensed short term rental suite in the tourist area of Victoria for the past almost 7 years. New, heavy-handed BC government legislation has recently banned most short term rentals across the province, has redefined short-term as anything less than 90 days, and has stripped away without consultation or compensation the protection of the law from the buildings like ours that have “grandfathered legal non-conforming status”, which were built and marketed for providing tourist accommodation and are still being legally used for their original purpose. Penalties for continuing to operate our licensed small businesses beyond May 1st are draconian. Nor is it feasible tax-wise to change the business use to residential/long term rentals which would trigger a massive GST tax charge, nor are units selling at all, even at greatly reduced prices, due to the high interest rates. Therefore most suites, like ours, will have to be left empty at great cost to us, for who knows how long. This benefits no one.
It also means that we can no longer host the countless non-vacationing BC people needing a short term home, like much-needed travelling nurses on contracts of less than 3 months, film crews, trades workers here for a project, hospital patients & their families here for lengthy treatment, those whose homes have been flooded, those who are in between homes...Now none of these people will be able to rent a temporary place to live for less than 3 months…How truly sad...
The Property Rights Association of BC has been doing wonderful, volunteer advocacy work on behalf of all of us whose lives and financial future are being deeply affected by this legislation. As of time of writing, we now have 9,515 signatures—but we very much want the full 10,000 signatures from BC residents (only) that will be turned in later this evening!
This Wed. (March 6th) our petition will be presented by the Shadow Housing Minister for BC United, Karin Kirkpatrick, to the Legislative Assembly, together with her Private Members’ Bill seeking amendments to the ban on STRs. Gary and I will be present at the session.
If you are in agreement with the petition’s aims, whether because you support owners’ property rights or because you & your family simply love to stay in personal, affordable suites with kitchen facilities rather than in impersonal, increasingly expensive hotels (as they have now been given the total monopoly they advocated to get), then please sign the petition asap today! Would you then kindly also forward the petition link on to your family members or other people you know who love vacation rentals, for their signatures? Thank you on behalf of 1000s of us affected by this legislation. Rosemary & Gary

On May 1, 2024 all non principal residence Short-Term Rentals in B.C. will be disallowed and made illegal under threat of a $3000 per day fine for operating. The NDP Government is trying to sell the story that they are "Returning rentals back from short-term to affordable-living long-term rentals". This is untrue.

The legal non-conforming rentals in Victoria were supported by the City of On May 1, 2024 all non principal residence Short-Term Rentals in B.C. will be disallowed and made illegal under threat of a $3000 per day fine for operating.

The NDP Government is trying to sell the story that they are "Returning rentals back from short-term to affordable-living long-term rentals". This is untrue.

The legal non-conforming rentals in Victoria were supported by the City of Victoria Transient Zoning and built as legal short-term rentals to support improving the tourist industry in Victoria which was in a slump.

These units are in the highest cost area in downtown Victoria and will never be affordable-living spaces as the initial purchase cost and operating costs will not support the lower affordable-living rental units without being subsidized by the owners for $2000 to $3000 per month. Most owners will leave these empty until sold.

Our own guests from within and outside B.C. have told us they will no longer come to B.C. to holiday but instead will go elsewhere. None of the 60+ short-term rentals for sale have sold in the past months except for a couple with reduced prices of over $150,000 by panicing sellers.

The attached petition is to have the NDP Government reverse the section in Bill 35 Section 36 which has ripped away the legal short-term rental owners property rights. Please add your vote today if you want a healthy tourist industry and to protect property rights in B.C. The NDP cannot be allowed to remove property rights without compensation based on false ideology and unproven market research. If this can be done to the short-term rental owners your own property may be next. Please add your voice.

2,479 signatures are still needed! Keep Legal Short Term Rentals in BC
