Happy International Women’s Day!
Today as we celebrate the social, cultural, economic and political achievements of women around the globe, we remember the contributions of an early pioneer in the field of medicine with a connection to Stratford.
In 1875, Dr. Jennie (Jenny) Trout was the first woman licensed to practice medicine in Canada. Dr. Trout was born in Scotland in 1841 and when she was six years old, her family moved to Canada and settled in Ellice Township, near Stratford.
Her family regularly attended the Knox Presbyterian Church (now the Copperlight Centre) in Stratford and Dr. Trout was married there in 1865. Last year, the Copperlight Centre unveiled a plaque commemorating Dr. Trout’s association with the building.
Dr. Trout studied medicine at the University of Toronto, but due to the poor treatment she received as a female student, she transferred to a medical school in Pennsylvania and graduated from there in 1871. She received her medical license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario in 1875 and set up practice in Toronto.
