FEAST: An Edible Road Trip A cross-country adventure dedicated to telling vibrant stories of Canadian food culture at www.edibleroadtrip.com.

Co-created by Lindsay Anderson and Dana VanVeller. FEAST: An Edible Road Trip is the result of months of strategic planning, hundreds of cups of tea, and wild visionary indulgence. It is a project dedicated to exploring Canada, highlighting incredible regional food, and meeting and featuring interesting characters and organizations. Inspiration for this project arose when, in casually asking frien

ds what they consider to be typically Canadian foods, few answers were given beyond Kraft Dinner, poutine, Nanaimo Bars, and butter tarts. While fully enamoured with the latter three, we knew there was so much more to it, and were intrigued that Canadian cuisine seemed so lacking in identity. We decided to combine our passions for writing, travelling, and eating into one unique adventure; FEAST will take us across the country in search of stories about Canadian food, with an aim of showing its unique character and proving just how much we have to celebrate. From coast to coast, we’ll share the FEAST road trip through writing, interviews, photography, and video. FEAST will tell stories of everyday Canadians, particularly those who make and find our food: farmers, fishers, chefs, hunters, foragers, home cooks, camp cooks, chefs, wine makers, cheese makers, beer makers, roadside café owners, bakers, beekeepers, food bloggers, coffee roasters, and more. From north to south, rural to metropolitan, we’ll show off Canadian food, this country’s diverse culture, and its ever-changing landscape.

Here we are chatting about cookbooks and Canadian food culture :)

A topic that I feel we haven’t REALLY explored the way I’d like to is Canada’s food identity. And that’s something that my guests this week, Lindsay Anderson and Dana VanVeller of FEAST: An Edible Road Trip know an awful lot about!

Lindsay and Dana are authors and freelance food writers based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Their award-winning culinary travel blog, edibleroadtrip.com launched in 2013 and went on to win a Saveur Best Food Blog Award. In 2017, they published their debut cookbook, Feast: Recipes and Stories from a Canadian Road Trip through Appetite by Random House. It quickly became a bestseller, and was awarded the Taste Canada Gold Award for Regional and Cultural Cookbooks. Their latest project saw them travelling to Nunavut as consultants on a country food cookbook with the Department of Fisheries and Sealing.

In our interview, they speak to what makes the foods and cuisines in Canada just so diverse and complex, and they highlight some of their experiences during their road trip and cookbook writing process. They even explore their more recent project working in Nunavut a bit and share the ways in which their connections with food have grown through time.

Well holy s**t. We won a Taste Canada award! What an incredible way to cap off a 6 year adventure, 3 of which have been with and . Congrats to all the other nominees and winners, and thanks to for capturing us in our best duds/reading over that early-stage book proposal. We finished the night in a dive bar drinking cheap wine and listening to the Foo Fighters. Couldn’t have been happier.

Cheers to road trips, to adventures, to memories made and most importantly to no more driving… (for now!) In this photo, we celebrated the 5-month road trip with our Toyota Yaris. We couldn’t imagine what this trip would have been like without such a reliable vehicle; it kept up with the abuse we dealt it all through Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the rest of Canada! Toyota has continued to show that their vehicles are more that just metal and tires—they’re a part of your road trip team. Thank you for following along as we shared our Prairie Toyota stories. One of the most memorable meals we had in the Prairies was Supper in the Field, which took place in Kelwood, Manitoba and was the 10th annual celebration of local food in the province. We drove the Yaris out to the field and feasted on steak, artisan bread, wild rice pilaf, Ukrainian beet buns, pickerel cheeks, and birch syrup-sweetened coffee—all evidence of a thriving regional food culture in Manitoba. The national park wonder, that small town charm, and those hard working farmers are truly some of the best parts of Prairie life. Follow along as we share our Prairie stories with our Toyota. Some of the best views we saw on our road trip were from the front seat of our Toyota Yaris. Whether it was the majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains, the open skies of Saskatchewan, or the beautiful sunsets along the Manitoba lakes, our Yaris was always there for us. On today’s story we’re remembering our visit to Maple Hills Bison Farm in Alberta. There, against our better judgement, we stood within a herd of bison and even pet the tame one (after confirming multiple times that it was, in fact, tame). While absolutely thrilling, we were pleased to climb back into the safety of our Yaris and check the whole “stand within a circle of bison” thing off our bucket lists. Our Yaris was our adventure-mobile for the entirety of our road trip, a dependable pal that contained our emotional ups, downs, and many bad jokes. We travelled over 35,000km and didn’t have a single issue. The Yaris was our hero in the Prairies, putting up with anything we threw at it, and continued giving us peace of mind on our entire cross-Canada excursion. Follow along as we share our Prairie stories with our Toyota—and share yours! Today, for our summer of stories, we reminisce about our time in the land of living skies—Saskatchewan! This province is prairie country at its finest. While driving through in our Yaris, we were treated to never-ending fields of bright yellow canola, and were constantly pulling over to take in beautiful sunsets or photograph the many gorgeous old houses and barns. What we loved most about Saskatchewan was how foreign it felt from our usual life, and there was always something new to discover at every turn in our reliable Yaris.

Road Trip 101: The Toyota Yaris made for the perfect karaoke machine while we were pulled over taking a break from those long stretches of Prairie road. Fortunately, the interior had a surprising amount of room—more than enough space for all our stuff AND our sweet, sweet dance moves. 💃🏻💃🏼 .

Tried to get to Rankin Inlet from Yellowknife, but ended up flying all the way to Iqaluit and back because an icy runway meant we couldn’t land! We’ll try to return later in the summer, and in the meantime we’ve had a chance to explore (windy) Yellowknife before heading back to Vancouver. Northern travel is unpredictable, but there’s always a silver lining (or at the very least, warm cookies and complimentary wine from ).

BUY PIE, CHANGE LIVES. Actually it’s future pie, but that sounds even cooler, quite frankly. Stephanie and Andrea of are two of the most talented and hard working ladies we know, but a fire in their beautiful East Van shop (where they let us host our launch party!) has currently put a halt to their pie production. They need some help to make it through, and are currently selling pie bucks through . Support these ladies! They have done the same for so many others, including us, and remember: YOU WILL GET PIE LATER BECAUSE YOU HELPED.
