"Don’t let her looks deceive you... Passing Cloud could be the prettiest boat on the coast, but oh man, can she sail!

This past week, we took Passing Cloud around Cape St. James, one of the most remote and rugged areas on the planet. She and our crew faced all types of winds, swell, currents and weather conditions. Passing Cloud was game for it all, pushing us out of our comfort zones and asking for more..."

[PART 2 - Living Landscapes of SG̱ang Gwaay: Ḵ'aang.ahljuu]

In August 2021, a team of Gwaii Haanas staff, Parks Canada archaeologists, and Haida Gwaii Museum experts went to work on SG̱ang Gwaay after artifacts had been exposed during a hurricane-force storm.

The team returned to SG̱ang Gwaay in August 2022, this time to focus on areas across the island. What was found reveals more of the stories of the island’s history, giving us a deeper understanding of what life on SGang Gwaay might have looked like thousands of years ago.

Located in the South West corner of the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, the village site of SGang Gwaay Llnagaay commemorates the living culture of the Haida people and their relationship to the land and sea, and offers a visual key to their oral traditions.

Here you will find the remains of longhouses, together with carved mortuary and memorial poles that illustrate the Haida people’s art and way of life. The Haida Watchmen who safeguard this site guide us through the cultural history of this ancient Haida village, from time immemorial to the present.

Passing Cloud has arrived in Haida Gwaii ⚓

In a country teeming with spectacular wilderness areas, Haida Gwaii (temporarily known as the Queen Charlotte Islands) stands alone.

Situated approximately 100 kilometres (62 miles) off the northwest coast of British Columbia and often described as “the Canadian Galapagos” in reference to its endemic species found nowhere else on Earth, this is truly a unique world. This remote island archipelago offers unmatched biological diversity paired with the Indigenous cultural heritage that has been stewarding these lands and waters for more than 14,000 years.

It’s official, we’re in Haida Gwaii! ⚓️

We completed the Hecate Strait crossing yesterday evening and were welcomed to the “islands of the people” with calm waters and a beautiful sunset.

We look forward to another incredible season here and learning of the rich Haida culture from the Haida Watchmen who safeguard some of the most significant cultural and archaeological sites here in the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, including the mortuary poles and longhouse depressions of the village of SGang Gwaay Llnagaay, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
