This past weekend two Gershaw athletes represented their school at the ASAA Track and Field Provincial Championships in Edmonton. A third, Keely Timmons, unfortunately broke her finger playing softball and was unable to compete in javelin. Daniel Trevizo maintained his ranking with a throw of 28.66m in Discus while Mary Reusser improved her ranking by 5 spots and made the top 10 in the province (also in Discus). Way to go Daniel and Mary!

Grade 9 students joined forces this year with seniors from the Pleasant View Lodge to develop stories using picture prompts! The learning is endless in this project as relationships grew, points of view discussed, and the development of a story! The stories and biographies of those involved were published in the book “Timless Tales” with the cover illustration completed by a Grade 9 student! Thank you to Charity (Pleasant View Lodge), Kelli-Anne (Instructional Coach/organizer) and Ms. Cross (Grade9 LA Teacher) for making this worthwhile project come together! The book release was held on Friday with the seniors, students, and their families!

Grade 5s had their overnight field trip in Elkwater this week. The wind was blowing, but they built shelters, went geocaching, and explored the wetland critters. They enjoyed a sleepover, and roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over the fire. It was great to be outside where they enjoyed exploring the forest as they played hide n' seek, kick the can, and sardines. They had so much fun together. A huge thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to ensure a successful trip!

Day 8 - Our last day. We started with a bus/walking tour of Toronto, visiting the Distillery District, seeing the Flat Iron, Union Station and more. We toured the St Lawrence Market during our free time before walking to the CN Tower and taking in views of the city.
We then walked to the Hockey Hall of Fame and found our local SGS alumni Troy Loney's name on the Stanley Cup.
We then loaded back on the bus to head to the airport where we were entertained with some "coach-e-okey". After security checks and supper we are waiting to board our plane and enjoying line dances, card games and connection at our gate.
We have had an amazing 8 days. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making this trip a reality for our students. It's an experience they won't ever forget!

The staff and student of SGS would like to congratulate Gabe on this amazing recognition of his dedication and study of STEM applications. Congratulations!

PRPS would like to congratulate 👏 Senator Gershaw student Gabe Thacker for recently being awarded a $120,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship. Gabe, along with his twin sister Ria, are the 2024 co-valedictorians at SGS this year.

Schulich is a STEM scholarship for undergraduates with 100 of these highly coveted awards given to students attending one of 20 partner universities across Canada each year. As Gabe will be taking a degree in engineering at the University of Alberta in September this year, he was eligible for one of fifty $120,000 scholarships. The other 50 scholarships are valued at $100,000 and are for students enrolled in science or math undergraduate programs.

Gabe signed up with GrantMe Educational Consulting, which provided him with a list of scholarships he was eligible for. In addition to the Schulich Leader Scholarship, Gabe was also awarded $6,000 for being a Loran finalist.

Day 7 -We started with a short visit to the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, QC (across the river from Ottawa) before loading the bus for a long 5 hr drive to Toronto. We grabbed a quick bite to eat at Fran's before heading to Roger's Stadium to watch the Blue Jay's take on the White Sox in a 9-2 win. Our kids were on the jumbo tron 2x and they successfully started the wave through the stadium after relentlessly not giving up.
Tomorrow is our last day.
