At low tide, the falls hit the shore. At high tide, we take the boat under and giggle as the spray crashes down.
In winter, they freeze over. In storms, they rage. In summer, the flow steadies to a slower pace. All dreamy. Ever changing.

There is a back and forth that happens between a couple when under the task of building a house together. Some priorities shift and change as the project reveals advantages and limitations. The one priority that stood firm from start to finish was a spa bathroom for 2, and we both found reason to justify all the things. Heated tile floors. Floor to ceiling glass shower enclosure. Lots of storage. And room in the shower for two.

Finding the right grain and the right look for a complete birch interior was no small feat. Neither was getting all those panels perfectly into place, and precisely spaced shadow gaps. The solution was dowels, and lots of hands holding it all in place as it secured together.

Lotsa beach or a little beach, it constantly changes as the tides come in and out. At times, the waterfall crashes on rock, while other times the water splashes into the ocean. Our playground is always changing. Come play.

Sized small, but packed with intentionality. Every drawer item, cabinet spot, and storage nook has been planned to fit it all in. Complemented by an outdoor kitchen, the indoor kitchen holds a dishwasher, small oven and range, full sized fridge, espresso machine, and all the amenities to pull off a gourmet meal. The kitchen is the heart of every maritime home, and we made it our priority too. Plan your groceries with delicious in mind!

It was about an idea quickly sketched in front of the TV one night, and a determination to bring it to life. Welcome to our sauna and the delight of views in every direction. Tides and Cape Split. Waterfalls and eagles. Stars and Northern Lights! Some view.
Cool ocean nights mean perfect sauna weather in any season.

Floor to Ceiling windows were a must during this renovation, and were not as straightforward as one might expect. At the start of the project, there was a sense of making a gigantic wish list to accomplish, and then reality through us the curveballs. To get this scale of view we would need a new roof, which was a happy accident. The new design created an off centre ridge and creates a warm hug as your attention is pushed outside.
The eagles soar past, the seabirds dive, and we have repeatedly caught sight of big jumping things. John, the fisherman and harbour master says they were mako sharks and his legacy of fishing the harbour leaves no doubt that he is right! The view changes often.

Growing up with maritime families, the sayings are always in our heads.
It’s a thing that happens when standing and looking out, like all my ancestors are in my head with their maritime sayings:
“That there is some view. Some view”.
Cape Split is a direct line of sight, and a highly recommended outing for a hike. Plan to venture back to a hot sauna and a moment to recharge the aching muscles. It’s epically Canadian, and epically long, and epically worth the view at the end. Some view. Some view.

It started with a random drive by and a hand painted for sale sign. The family we purchased from had loved well in these walls, and were ready for their next chapters. We found ourselves in the right place at the right time. Little did we know that the attic would hold our own family connections.
The family were Planter ancestors, who had been welcomed to the area to replace the then recently deported Acadian families. These Planter families moved into Acadian farms and picked up where the french community had stopped when they were forcibly removed. When the Acadians returned years later, their houses were now owned by these newcomers. My family were the deported ones. The family we bought this house from had been granted my ancestral home.
While a wild enough connection on its own, the attic also held papers that proved title to an adjacent house. Securing the title documents was a bonus in this house purchase, and an ongoing grey area in negotiations. While they got my family home 7 generations prior, we were awarded a bonus house from the attic paperwork in present day.
This house never holds back!

No longer an island, at low tide this becomes a feature of the ocean floor, up for discovery and exploration. As the tides shift in and out, this island is either one to paddle around or one to explore around. The basalt rock makes a perfect arch beyond this treed island, for shore exploration. Watch for periwinkles on the rock and seaglass tossed on shore. The tides refresh beachcombing adventures every tide cycle!

A sheer delight of the property has been the ever changing settings. It’s nearly impossible to describe, as the tides move in and out, visitors walk the beach as it changes, and sunsets shift by the second. You’ll be sure to catch yourself several times a day declaring, “Oh, look at that!”. Some of our faves: the colour bursts at sunset, the bridge of stones creating path for beach visitors, and taking that path away as the tide comes in, the rush of water created over the bridge (where it’s said the best fishing can happen), the eagles and shorebirds that swoop over the windows, the stars and satellites shooting past at night, and the waterfall interacting with winds and tides.
Impossible to describe and inspiring to live. Come join us and see for yourself!

We often meet people in the harbour who return as adults and recount cherished childhood memories with their family here. Watching our own kids live out this fairytale life, we often wonder if they have any idea just how special this place is, right here and now.

We’d argue it’s a perfect place to watch the tides, and play witness to Mother Nature. Check this out! Tides are constantly in shift, like how a bathtub sloshes as you move back and forth. They aren’t immediate, but in constant flux from a state of receding to coming in. That perfect rhythm of water movement and shape of the Bay of Fundy results in dramatically high tides. Baxters Harbour gets over 13m (43’) tides, reaching out into the Bay and returning to creep up the wall of the waterfall. In a 24 hour period, there will be a big tide and a little tide. That makes for 2 high tides and 2 low tides, separated by about 6 hours and 10 minutes.
