NEW SERVICE AREA

As of February 2023, I will be providing bodywork services in Nova Scotia in the corridor from Halifax to Annapolis Royal. I'm excited to bring more soft tissue modalities to Nova Scotia and to get to know this vibrant and growing community.

It has been a privilege to work with the equestrian community in Ontario and I look forward to hearing everyone's updates in the future!

Typically I am a private person, and so I don’t use this platform to talk about exactly who I am and what I do. But I’m learning that I need to share more of myself so that I can reach a larger number of people. And hopefully, that means you.

What I do is provide bodywork for horses. I’m certified in multiple light-touch modalities and kinesiology taping, I’m working through an animal communication course, and next I’ll be pursuing animal osteopathy.

But these skills are not my true strength.

What I am is a systems thinker. My gift is to look at the whole, and see how all of the parts are working together. Which means that if you let me, I can point to the areas that are holding you and your horse back, whether it’s actually soft tissue that I can improve, or a factor that needs help from another source.

I am in no way a vet, farrier, saddle fitter, or olympic-calibre rider. And I will refer back to this network every day.

But what I can do is see patterns, and see them fast.

There is absolutely no point in having a bodyworker out to help with soft tissue health if the other parts of the system are going to block those changes from being helpful. And my speciality is making you aware of these blockages. Is it fun to hear that you or your trusted professional may be doing their best, but it isn’t working for your horse? NO!

But:

Are you tired of chasing for improvements that never seem to happen even though you’re putting in the time and effort?

Are you tired of not being believed, when you say there’s something wrong?

Are you tired of hearing from people “that’s just the way your horse is”? “It’s all in his head”, “There’s nothing wrong with him”, “You just need to work him harder” ?

I’ve been there and done that with more than one horse. My horses found me because they knew I would listen to them, honour them, and give them the best care I could from every possible angle. No matter if it meant switching barns, advocating to the vets for diagnostics they didn’t think were necessary, changing farriers, hunting for yet another saddle. You name it, I’ve been through it. And it’s all horrible. And truly, truly, truly, I can’t say it enough - as soon as you listen to the horse, you get the answers.

And helping you find the answers is what I can help you with.

My clients who have changed their hoofcare program are calling me out less.

My clients who have changed their saddle fit have improved their performance.

My clients who have changed their fitness strategy have more willing athletes.

The list goes on and on. The bodywork will tell me where your horse needs help, and then I will relay that information to you. I believe in your horse, and that communication is the most powerful tool I have to make a true benefit to your animal.

So. That’s who I am, warts and all. This not-staying-in-her-lane bodyworker is here to help, and won’t take no for an answer if the no is coming from a human instead of a horse.

If that sounds like something you are interested in, drop me a line. If I can’t help, I’ll refer you to someone who can.

Data Data Data!! This kind of study is critical to maintaining horse welfare and our social license to operate. Imagine if all owners had access to a simple blood test that could keep their horses from major injury? What an amazing advance that would be.

Industry partners have joined with UK on research that could help vets detect injuries before they become career- or life-ending.

A really great visual and summary of the issue of Negative Plantar Angles and the effects on the horse. I see this a lot and correcting it through trimming is essential to creating lasting improvements in the horse.

*Negative Plantar Angles*. I see them so frequently, yet it's a tough one to explain in the field. All too often I see my clients' eyes glazing over slightly - as well they might 😂 So here, in clear language, is the low down on broken back hoof-pastern angles, a.k.a. negative plantar angles, and the effect they have on the horse's posture and body.
Back issues and saddle fit problems come aplenty with this. The biggest take home message is that 1) it's usually a human-made problem and 2) it's easy come, not so easy go, with corrective hoofcare needed.

Many people instinctively use baby-talk when talking to their pets, often characterized by a high-pitched voice and exaggerated intonations. The same is true for many riders with their horses. But are horses sensitive to this type of speech? Ethologists from INRAE and IFCE (French Horse and Riding I...
