In the 1700s, lobsters were so abundant along the Massachusetts coast that they would wash ashore in piles up to two feet high.

These crustaceans were considered the “poor man’s chicken” and were primarily used as fertilizer or fed to prisoners, slaves, and indentured servants. In fact, some indentured servants revolted against being forced to eat lobster, leading to agreements that they would not be fed lobster more than three times a week.

As the American rail transportation system developed, train workers realized they could serve lobster to passengers because it was plentiful and cheap. Passengers, unaware of the negative stigma attached to lobsters, believed they were eating a decadent food and began requesting it even when they weren’t on the train.

This shift in perception transformed lobster from a lowly food to a luxurious delicacy. It’s amazing how perspectives can change when economic opportunities arise!

The Halifax Explosion was a maritime disaster that occurred in Halifax, Nova Scotia. On the morning of December 6, 1917 a deadly communications error resulted in the collision of two ships in the harbour, one of them a munitions shop loaded with explosives bound for the battlefield of the First World War. Just before 9:05 a.m. the cargo onboard the Mont Blanc exploded, unleashing a force more powerful than anything wrought by humankind before the detonation of the atomic bomb.

Over 1900 people were killed, and another 9000 were maimed or blinded. Both Dartmouth and Halifax suffered extensive damage. The Mi’kmaq settlement at Turtle Grove was completely destroyed.

🏴‍☠️💰Could it be!? Yes .. it could be ..What a great day for my guests from visiting aboard with a tour out to Oak Island Causeway … then across to the island to grab a few photos .. with permission.. never know who you will run into 😉.. nice chat with Billy and then Marty made the effort and time to walk over and chat with us for a few minutes before being dragged away from a production crew member. There were a few others we saw including Rick, Gary and Craig. Last day on the island as things are wrapping up filming for the season.
