This past November, I had the incredible privilege of stopping in Party, Brazil, aboard the stunning SH Vega with Swan Hellenic. Exploring this magical place on an expedition cruise ship was a completely unique experienceāso different from the large ocean cruises many of us are familiar with.

If youāve ever thought you might want to be a travel agent, read on. *Spoiler alert- itās not all sunshine and beaches š
Iāve had more inquiries lately than ever before about people wanting to join the industry- specifically joining my team to be mentored by me. One person asked:
āWhat were the biggest challenges you had to face and why could one find it stressful ?ā
I responded with a bit of a novel, but here are the sides of my job that arenāt glamorized on social media:
1. The pandemic and the ever changing laws, supplier terms, cancellation of hundreds of trips and rebooking them without pay. Earning very little for 2+ years
2. Mass flight cancellations in 2022 due to pilot shortage. Frantically trying to rebook everyoneās holidays with no notice. Coordinating refunds and various terms all while corresponding with concerned clients
3. Every weather event, huge storm, media release about instability, disease (ex: H1N1, Zika), or strike from airline or airport workers that affects peopleās travel plans
4. Supplier cancellations or clients needing to cancel due to illness or loss of a loved one- or worse yet, having to see clients lose out on hard earned $$ if they didnāt have insurance. A lot of love goes into planning these trips and itās hard having to undo it all.
5. Dealing with unhappy customers and unpleasant people in general. Sometimes people forget that weāre human too! If anything goes wrong with any part of a trip the feedback all gets sent to you whether it was within your control or not.
6. Antiquated technology and lengthy hold times- Iāve spent upwards of 6 hours on hold more times than Iād like to admit.
7. Needing to do regular training and webinars to stay updated on the latest travel product, supplier system, resources, hotel updates etc. you will always feel like you donāt know enough- yet thereās always more to learn
8. Taking time on evenings, weekends, or during my own āvacationsā to deal with the needs of clients- it can become a very demanding job with hundreds of moving parts!

A client told me on a 1:1 call this week that they usually book on their own. They also track down the resort contacts so they can contact the resort in advance of their stay for special requests. 24 hours in Rio- all I can say is WOW!
We stayed at the Fairmont Copacabana which had incredible views of the bay and will also be the hotel that hosts the G20 summit in a few weeks. We did a private city tour with stops at Christ the Redeemer, cable car to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, and the Selaron steps. We ate at TWO different Brazilian steak houses and enjoyed a few Caipirinhas before boarding our expedition ship for the week.
I had no idea how huge Rio was (over 6 million people) and we saw everything from luxurious hotels to Favelas. There are more than 1000 of these areas in Rio- they are poor areas within the city that are owned by drug cartels, but they arenāt connected to the cityās water system, however, they steal electrical from the city by tapping into the overhead lines. It was surprising to see how drastically different the city felt depending on which area you were in.
The currency is the Brazilian real (approximately 4 Reals = 1 CAD) and the main language is Portuguese! Everything was quite affordable, and it was really easy to get around by Uber. Private tours are the way to go for seeing the main tourist attractions.

South America here I come!! š§š·š¦š·
Not only do I get to check a new continent off the list, I also get to check off 3 new countries- with stops in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. And if that wasnāt good enough I also get to sail with brand Iāve never sailed with before- Swan Hellenic.
This is a work trip and I will also be networking with our head office executive, and many sales managers and VPās for top brands that we sell. Itās going to be jam packed and amazing!

Only 3 weeks ago I got to take a quick trip to Cancun with my newest team member Michelle and check out a line up of properties!
We were hosted by one of my favorite business development managers and got to know a really great group of TAās from across Western Canada.
These trips are so important for building a successful travel business. Not only did we get to see a large variety of resorts for ourselves, we also got to meet the sales managers for these resorts so we have contacts when we need them! We also got to ātalk shopā with other TAās for 5 days straight- and itās amazing how you can still learn more about resorts, brands, companies or tips and tricks- even after 10 years in the business.

We recently took a family holiday where we were we all unplugged. This was led by me- the hard working, social media whiz. I was guilty of using my job as an excuse for needing to share, and needing to be āonā all the time. I had to swallow my own pride, admit that I was on my phone way too much on a daily basis and ask my family to join me on this challenge. I signed out of every app, every chat, and only monitored emails morning and night for urgent client matters.
It was the best family trip weāve ever had.
We had the best conversations with our kids. They embraced the idea, and after a couple days stopped asking if they could play a little game on their phone (we saved this for the flight home!).
I took this video of them because I realized they had been playing together on the beach with nothing but a cup from the resortā¦ for nearly 2 hours straight š
This filtered into our life at home after the trip and weāve all been spending more time conversing and less time on our devices.
Unfortunately it also shone a light on just how disconnected some people are on holidays. When you have no phones at your own table itās hard not to notice others who are staring at their phones both during or after a meal. Kids sitting and waiting for their parentās attention, or trying to glance over to see what theyāre looking at. When you see the disconnection it really hits you what that looks like for your own family.
So it got my thinking- what if we started promoting this idea of the connected holiday? What if it really caught on? What if family trips were less about sharing with the world (or needing to know what the rest of the world is doing when youāre on holidays), and more about the delicate moments and memories that were made together?

My Travel Agent FAQās Revealed!
Iām asked all of these questions a LOT so figured it makes the most sense to have the answers readily available!
1. Are there fees to book with you?
The short answer is no. 95% of the products I sell are the exact same price as online; this includes all inclusive vacation packages. In some cases (ex: domestic air) my supplierās price will be the same as the online price and I will have to mark up the total to include commission for my service, but for most cases- Iām always the same price as online.
2. How do you get paid then?
Every travel product you book online has commission built into it. By booking it yourself online you are letting that company keep the commission for themselves after you did all the work. Booking via a travel agent allows us to assist with your travel plans and keep the commission- which is a win-win for booking with large tour operators and still supporting local!
3. When do you get paid?
Typically commission is paid out the month after our clients travel. Meaning that if you donāt book, or you book elsewhere, we get paid $0 for our time and effort.
4. We got quotes from another agency, could you check on trips for us too?
This is a tricky one. As all travel agents realize- you are always looking for the best vacation for the lowest possible price- so why not have 3 agents looking for you? The short answer- we are all selling the same products, and all are for the same price (with the exception of having extra group space). By doing this you are committing two extra agents to a lot of unnecessary work that they wonāt be paid for. So find an agent you like and trust, and be open and communicate what you like or donāt like about weāve suggested. Also let us know if youāre needing more quotes- thatās our job!
5. Weāve always just booked with (insert online travel site here) and found great deals. Weāve also never had issues- why should I book with you?
If youāve never had a problem arise related to travel, and have never had any questions before, during, or after travel- then congratulations- youāre among the minority! What most people donāt realize is everything you see online is at our fingertips in one monster search engine so we KNOW we are getting you the best flights, best room available, or best price for your dates. If you love searching for deals on your own- thatās great! Shop around, get an idea of what youāre looking for, then bring it to the expert to take over from there. We might see things you are missing! We will also be with you every step of the way.
6. How can I reach you?
I work from home which means Iām available almost all hours of the day, every day of the week. You can reach me via email, phone, text, Facebook messenger, or Instagram messenger and I will typically respond within an hour (but usually less). I do try to keep quoting inside āregularā business hours, but during the busy winter season you will find me booking clients during the evenings and weekends.
7. Which tour operators and companies do you sell?
I book every major tour operator, airline, hotel franchise, cruise line, car rental company, and tour company that you can imagine. The main list would be WestJet Vacations, Sunwing, Transat, Sunquest, Signature Vacations, Disney, Expedia (these are about 7 of over 200 +companies) I also have access to other travel consolidator companies that arenāt available to the general public. If you have access to book it, so does your travel agent.
8. Do you book Air B&B or Homeaway properties?
No I do not. Short term home rental is actually illegal in many parts of the U.S, and other parts of the world as well, just not enforced. This past summer they enforced these laws in Maui and it left many people scrambling last minute for new accommodations. After hearing my fair share of horror stories regarding false advertising, double booked accommodations, etc I choose to stick to major tour operators, hotel chains, and licensed vacation home rental companies. Many people also donāt realize that travel insurance doesnāt cover Air B&B type properties, as they donāt fit the proper definition of āaccommodationā. Often the savings arenāt worth the risk!
9. How do I know my booking is safe? Iāve heard of other travel agencies leaving clients high and dry.
Unlike some agencies, all of my bookings are done direct. So if we book you a Sunwing package, Sunwing will appear on your credit card statement and you will receive a client copy of your invoice from Sunwing. You will also receive an invoice from myself which is processed by Quality Control at TPI head office. We have over 800 agents Canada wide and are growing daily. I also have thousands of happy clients from over the past 5 years, and am fully committed to keeping my clients happy and growing my business!
10. Are there perks to booking with you?
Yes. Probably too many to list! But hereās a few:
a) You have an expert at your disposal to be able to answer every question under the sun. I do this full time, every day- I am a wealth of knowledge that is available to you, and I am quick to respond.
b) If ever youāre in trouble, just yelp for help! Yes Iāve watched too much Paw Patrol, but all joking aside itās much easier knowing you have someone thatās a text away at any given moment rather than trying to call 1-800 numbers from foreign countries.
c) I have access to booking some products with only a deposit and final payment 45 days prior to departure. Some companies offer a $0 deposit!
11. I want to work with someone who is an experienced traveler them self. What experience do you have?
I specialize in all inclusive vacation packages, destination weddings, and group travel. I was a destination bride myself in 2013 (prior to joining the travel industry) so I have firsthand knowledge from the brideās perspective as well as the agent perspective. I have been fortunate to be able to travel numerous times a year to various resorts and destinations. These trips have been girls trips, adult-only vacations, family trips with my babies, family trips with my young kids, and agent-only trips exploring various resorts. I have some great firsthand knowledge you can draw from!
12. Iāve been following your page but you havenāt shared any deals Iām interested in, or the dates donāt work. Do you have other deals?
If I havenāt been sharing deals itās likely because Iām so busy helping clients with their travel plans based on their unique wish list. If you want this help- let me know and I can cater a search just for you. I donāt just have āmyā deals, I have access to ALL the major suppliers/deals and when I have time I promote the good ones.
13. This all sounds great but we have credit card/airline points we like to use for travel. Can you still help us?
Yes. Some programs allow you to book travel on your own, and will reimburse your credit card once the travel is posted to your statement. In those cases- of course! In other cases (WestJet Dollars, Companion Vouchers) I typically suggest that my clients book the air on their own, and I can book the accommodations (All Inclusive or regular) as well as the airport transfers, and insurance separately.
14. Speaking of insurance- are you licensed to sell travel insurance in Saskatchewan?
Yes I am! I offer many different products through our partner- Allianz Global Assistance. I have my Insurance Councils of Saskatchewan License, Bylaws Exam, and complete continuing education annually to keep this in place. I am legally required to offer insurance to every client I book, which is a good thing because itās SO important to have adequate coverage.

For me to successfully find you the perfect vacation all I need from you is honesty and transparency. Yes- this means telling me if you donāt like my suggestions (and why), or that things are just too pricey, OR that you see something else online you like more, or even that your friend wants you to book with them. Finding the perfect vacation can be a long process with a lot of back and forth- we need to work together to find the one!
