Shag Cliff is a striking geological feature located in Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland. It is a towering sea cliff that rises sharply from the waters of Bonne Bay, a fjord that cuts deep into the park's landscape. The cliff gets its name from the shag, a local term for the cormorant, and other bird species often seen nesting along its rocky ledges. This area is a popular spot for bird watching, as you can observe cormorants, eagles and other seabirds gliding around the cliffs.
Shag Cliff is also notable for its geological significance, showcasing the unique geology of Gros Morne, which includes ancient rock formations that are part of the Earth's mantle, thrust up over millions of years due to tectonic activity. These cliffs are part of the Tablelands and Long Range Mountains' dramatic landscape, which helped the park earn its UNESCO World Heritage status.
The cliff can be best viewed from one of our zodiac excursions, or scenic cruises. It's rugged beauty makes it a great feature of the park, appealing to those interested in both natural history and stunning coastal scenery.
Confucius say: Storm may drench body, but big fish reward soul. Dry clothes later.
Every year, different types of whales visit Bonne Bay, including our majestic humpbacks. The two arms of the fjord are fairly sheltered, and many of our guests get the chance to watch them right from shore. One of the best places to spot them is at the Water's Edge Gros Morne, where they frequently come right up along the rocks to feed. In this video, you can hear the incredible sound of a humpback breathing as it passes by.
For those living here, moments like these remind us of the beauty that surrounds us every day
