I want to know - what is the toughest trip you have ever done?

Chris travelled with us to Vanuatu and Samoa in the South Pacific. Chris tells us he found Samoa “to be the hardest, probably because it involved a lot of longer drives and maybe I was getting a little tired. One day we crossed the entire country from the furthest western point, then a somewhat treacherous 2 hour crossing between the two islands, to the final destination at the most easterly point of the country. It took 10 hours altogether and I was hardly able to get into bed by the end.
Again accommodation was basic and there was no wifi for most of that week. This is a trip for a seasoned open-minded traveller. We had an excellent guide and driver and there were 9 in our group.
As with the other islands, I saw tribal culture, kava ceremonies, old blackened lava flows, countless churches and missions and [had] lots of snorkelling opportunities.

On the way home, because the beach lodge was at the opposite end of the island from the airport, I had a midnight taxi ride for 2+ hours to get to the 5 am flight.

Samoa had the most colourful fauna, what I would describe as vertical rainforests and the streets were lined with flags of nations attending the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. I wonder how King Charles and Queen Camila will hold up...

For a moment, everything was silent. Even the breeze seemed to pause. The horizon glowed as the last rays broke through mountain crests, illuminating jagged edges and ridges with a final burst of brilliance.

The sun is just beginning to rise, casting a soft amber glow over the misty jungle. The sounds of birds were all around, the symphony broken now and then by the chittering of monkeys and the rustle of leaves underfoot. Then, a sudden hush falls — a silence that almost felt out of place in this vibrant wilderness. There! A tiger!

Here is a photo of one of the few souvenirs I still have from my travels: a vintage 1986 bottle of red from Milestii Mici in Moldova, produced during the Communist era. The wine cellars are reportedly the largest in the world, and are located in a system of tunnels. You drive in by bus. Somewhere inside the mountain they had a table set up for us and wine was carried in by the caraf. It turned into somewhat of a wild afternoon.

So I bought this bottle and shared it with a friend (who is a wine connoisseur). His verdict: “It needs a bit more breathing; the nose is one of barnyard”.

Tom is awesome! He set up an Antarctic itinerary for our group with all flights/transfers and hotels, recommended the best tour options, reminded us of innumerable small helpful planning details and provided reading material. He clearly has massive travel experience. He is consistently available.

Anna hiked with us in the Julian Alps in Slovenia. The easternmost part of the great Alpine range offers some of Europe’s most stunning scenery and hiking opportunities. At its heart lies Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak, with the serene glacial lakes of Bohinj and Bled nestled far below. Over the course of a week, Anna and the small group of hikers she was with, embarked on five diverse hikes and explored both the national park and the more remote summits of the Karavanke range. The journey took them through wild meadows, along tranquil lake shores, across dense forests, and over rugged mountain ridges. Says Anna: “It was wonderful. Very hot, beautiful, challenging. We were 16 with two wonderful young guides, Masa and Hana. They’re experienced, knew the trails very well and took good care of us. I loved the hikes to the mountain huts for hardy lunches. “

Have you been to Slovenia? What did you think?

This is a side of the Dolomites you don’t always get to see on Instagram - one of moody, rainy weather. Europe has had a lot of rain this past summer and fall and Annie took these photos on her October Exodus Travels trip with us. She told me “Yup weather did not cooperate all week...sun first day mostly, then cloudy and rain and finished with some snow. Some mornings 0 degrees in am.. Cold no bother but clouds and rain less fun....especially for pictures. Despite this, will return one day for another tour with tour leader Rob She was very happy to have Rob as the leader. “He is very knowledgeable and was a good planner (daily quick meeting for planning). Seeing that the weather would only be nice for the first few days, he chose to do the hikes with “views” first. He was attentive to our needs and helped me a bit in sections with narrow passages as I get nervous when there is a drop next to the path.”
