In August, wild Pacific salmon are returning to this river in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest to spawn. The sounds of splashing salmon in the river are like a dinner bell to bears and other terrestrial and marine animals.
This photo was taken with a 500 mm lens and cropped, so as not to give away the location, for the protection of this bear.
While this bear chose where to eat this salmon, we are constantly assessing his behavioural cues for any signs of stress as there are other bears fishing in this river.
While this bear and ourselves have known each other for many years, we don't know if he has any experiences with people that have treated him disrespectfully since we've last seen him, so we give him plenty of space and ways that he can easily leave.
Especially at this time of year, as their hibernation nears, every single salmon and other food that bears eat, can mean the difference between a bear's survival and not, during hibernation, so it is crucial for their survival, that we are not altering nor interrupting their feeding.
While bears make for beautiful photos, they can also teach us a lot about who they really are and even how we can become better humans.

Two of our favourite, most followed scientists: Dr. Marc Bekoff and Dr. Gosia Bryja sharing some of the most important info of our time.
Dr. Bryja says:
"Knowledge needs to reach both the mind and the heart. Facts alone will not erase irrational fears because these fears are not underpinned by facts. Yes, it’s about making people understand “the truth” of who carnivores really are and making them genuinely care about this “truth.”
It’s about seeing bears and wolves as distinct individuals with their own stories and lives to unfold. It can be done. The human capacity for compassion is an unstoppable force."

Thank you both for this very timely piece! I believe that once people replace fear with the truth about these beautiful, sentient, emotionally intelligent animals, they will no longer tolerate the cruelty and killing.

Our misperceptions of magnificent animals such as "big bad wolves" and "killer bears" are driven by irrational fears; they have been demonized and persecuted for centuries.

TRISH BOYUM ~ gets up close and personal in a wild world!

Photographer Trish Boyum's 20,000+ images taken in the Great Bear Rainforest on the central coast of B.C. are an inspiration to renew our connectivity with the natural world.

While wildlife photographers join Trish and her husband Eric on their boat primarily to see and photograph bears, wolves and whales, many discover, as Trish has, that it’s the soul stirring temperate rainforest itself that provides the most evocative images.

Most of the photos being offered were taken in the Great Bear Rainforest in the territories of the Heiltsuk People of Bella Bella, the Kitasoo Xai’xais People of Klemtu and the Gitga’at People of Hartley Bay, with the photos of the poles from Haida Gwaii. The influences of Indigenous values have long been felt and respected by Trish and reflected in how she conducts herself while taking photos.

Amidst the soul stirring land and seascapes of the Great Bear Rainforest, it is the trust of the animals that she finds most inspiring. It is here in these lands of immeasurable beauty, Trish has been taught the best lessons of her life, by bears, in the very best ways. While photographers may generally agree that “good light is what makes the best photo”, Trish believes that her best photos comes from trust, respect and being open to the lessons that the natural world provides.

When immersed in nature, camera in hand, Trish is still surprised by how quickly thoughts of life’s challenges are replaced with the calm and healing that this connectivity with the natural world brings her.

Today, in honour of Earth Day, we invite everyone to begin a gratitude journal, entering even the smallest reminder you may experience, for all that Mother Earth teaches us, shares with us, and provides for us.
If anyone wants to share their first entry with us, we'd love to hear from you.
Our first entry is about our gratitude for the "thoughtful, committed citizens" that we know that are helping dispel the fear based myths about bears, by telling their stories about who bears really are.

Each year in early spring, tens of thousands of tons of Pacific Herring migrate from offshore to near-shore habitats to spawn en masse in one of nature’s most spectacular events. Near-shore waters flow chalky white with herring milt and eggs, drifting for kilometers along the coastline. The spawning herring and their eggs attract an abundance of predators – at a time when food resources tend to be low – that will forage for several weeks.
Sign up soon for 2025 in the Great Bear Rainforest to witness this spectacular event!

We talk a lot about the bears of the Great "Bear" Rainforest, but these trips also provide our guests with some of the greatest bird watching. Many species of birds come to the same inlets of the Grizzlies, to breed, nest and raise their young. This is THE best time of year to see the males in their breeding plumage and watch the mothers, raising their young.
We suggest opening each of the photos for their story.
Only 2 spots remain available: June 2 - 9: [email protected]
