Our Scotland and Kingsbrae (NB) retreats are now full, once again, as were the July retreat at St. Martins, NB and the May retreat at Kingsbrae.

We just have a room available for Ireland in early September and two rooms for the Cotswolds in December (one luxury suite and one Heritage suite).

See details on our website and contact us if you're seriously interested in one of the three remaining spaces. ~ Janie and Gerard

Traditional Newfoundland Sunday dinner. Brings me right back to my childhood. Potatoes, turnip, pease pudding, turkey, dressing and gravy. In between sets at Darcy’s pub not far from our hotel on George St. Took about two minutes to devour it all. ~ Gerard

Just a casual Sunday in St. John’s Newfoundland. More to come. This is the Fabled D’Arcy Broderick of the Irish Descendants, along with the epic Kevin Evans (of the famed Irish duo Evans and Doherty) and two other talented musicians whose names I will learn. Five spaces spoken for already for our small-group Newfoundland retreat next summer. Details to come.

If you're searching for a quiet, creative place to write in the company of a handful of like-minded souls, why not join us in the Cotswolds region of England, just before Christmas?

To give you an idea of what to expect, here's a video we took in the Great Hall of Abbots Grange, our exclusive-use venue for the week. We have one room left, suitable for a solo writer or a couple. You'll find a link to the webpage in the first comment below.

Some shots from yesterday's reading at the Halifax Central Library, moderated by Carol Bruneau, organized by Elliott Gish (both Nova Scotia authors). I truly enjoyed the conversation to the point where I forgot there was an audience. For a hot summer Saturday afternoon, I appreciate that there actually was an audience. Thanks, Halifax! See ya again soon.

Stow on the Wold is a small Gloucestershire town, first established as a market by the Normans as it lay at the intersection of several major roads. The name is Old English in origin, showing that it was a place of some importance to the Anglo Saxons, and means “place on the hill” or “sacred p...

We have one space newly available for our small-group writing retreat in the Cotswolds this December. Relax in the serenity of a 14th-century monastery as you write your next scene or poem by a crackling fire in the hearth of the Great Hall. We'll have group writing sessions and evening readings as well as written feedback and one-on-one meetings with an award-winning author. Be inspired by the illuminated pubs, cafés, restaurants, and shops in some of England's most beautiful villages at Christmastime.

Now would be a great time to support the KIRA - Kingsbrae International Residence for the Arts and Amphitheatre charitable arts organization and take in some quality programming at the same time. A few days ago, there was a fire in their historic building, where we’ve hosted several retreats over the years. No one was injured and the property was saved, thankfully, but they could use the boost!

We are THRILLED to welcome back the incredibly talented, Gabrielle Elisabeth! ✨🎶

Gabrielle made her Broadway debut in the Tony award winning musical, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and has performed on stages worldwide!🎹🎵

Most recently, she was featured in the world premiere of Galileo at the prestigious Berkeley Rep and can currently be seen as a co-star on the hilarious Emmy Award-winning series for Prime Video, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel! 🎭🌟

Hey there, Halifax! Cool conversation in a beautiful air-conditioned space at the Central Library on July 27 @ 2 PM. We'll talk about literature, magic realism, ghosts, fiction vs. reality and the writing life in Atlantic Canada, with a sneak peek at my new, nearly-done novel about witches, coffee shops, and black coyotes.

We suddenly have an opening for our late autumn Scotland writing retreat in the Highlands. The available space is a cottage, which is just a few yard away from the main house and has privacy and a fireplace, perfect for one or two people. If that feels like your opportunity, send us a note.

Gerard and I are enjoying a wonderfully lazy morning at home, coffees in hand. We just returned from Ireland yesterday—we can't help but feel the deep, natural connection to Newfoundland every time we're there, so it was fitting that we put a bow on the final details for our inaugural Newfoundland writing retreat while we were in Ireland. Newfoundland is just so very Irish, even as the province is its own unique, autonomous self.

We're so pleased to have at last secured the complicated plans for this retreat—Newfoundland is a huge province, so the logistics are challenging, but totally, completely worth it. The knowledge that we're finally going to explore and host a writing retreat in Gerard's home province with just a few writers next year is exciting, and we can't wait to share the details.

We're so lucky to host retreats in a lot of unique and special places in the world, but Newfoundland is near and dear to our hearts. Gerard's own writing captures a side of Newfoundland rarely seen—both dark and funny—and has won the province's NL Book Award (for Moonlight Sketches) and been nominated for national and international awards, as well as being shortlisted for the Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage and History award (for Finton Moon). Given that his most recent novel The Hush Sisters (also an award-winner) is set in St. John's, it's going to be a unique couple of weeks in one of the coolest places on earth, with an insider's view to the streets and harbours, forests and coves, and theatre and music.

We've been careful in our preparations of this retreat. It's not just going to be another tourist experience of Newfoundland (sure, kissing the cod will be available on demand, but it won't be required LOL!!)—it'll be an authentic, immersed insider experience in the company of someone who has played music in the bars and for local festivals, busked at the corner of George Street, taught at Memorial University in St. John's and high school English in Gander and Deer Lake, traveled those back roads, and cursed the unforgiving sea while dreaming of getting away and someday returning for more.

Next year, we'll not only return, but we'll get to share Newfoundland with a few good souls who will never forget it and will have a chance to write it all down, to boot. We'll make the official announcement in a few short weeks, but having finally pulled the final pieces of this retreat together last week while we were in Ireland, and having been struck at the serendipity that it all came together while we were there, I just couldn't wait :-). ~ Janie
p.s. we've shared an awesome video from the Newfoundland and Labrador tourism page below, just to give you a taste.

Our Story

Award-winning Newfoundland author Gerard Collins (now living in New Brunswick) and his partner, Jane Simpson, offer creative writing retreats for those who find inspiration in travel. On these retreats, Gerard focuses on your writing, with multiple workshops, feedback on a pre-submitted piece of work, and one-on-one discussions about your writing. You'll also have access to the writer-in-residence (Gerard) throughout the retreat. We choose comfortable accommodations, with some extras (meals, local tours) whenever feasible, and allow time for you to experience the local culture. Gerard has nearly two decades of teaching at the university level, including Memorial University of Newfoundland and University of New Brunswick. His two published books have won, and been nominated for, numerous literary prizes. Finton Moon, his first novel, was nominated for both the 2014 Dublin IMPAC award and the 2013 Sunburst Award for Excellence in Literature of the Fantastic, as well as the 2014 NL Heritage and History Award. His short story collection, Moonlight Sketches, won the 2012 NL Book Award. Gerard’s new novel, The Hush Sisters, published by Breakwater Books, releases in September 2020. In addition to his university teaching, Gerard has offered creative writing workshops across Atlantic Canada, mentored at the Piper's Frith, and offers private mentorship to select writers. For more information: www.goandwrite.ca or www.gerardcollins.ca.

Jane, Go and Write's administrator and "boots on the ground" tour coordinator, is a writer and an executive and artistic director at an arts and culture centre, and has worked in the communications and marketing industry for more than two decades. She lives in southern New Brunswick where she writes poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Jane has been shortlisted for Arc Poetry's Poem of the Year and is a Writers' Federation of New Brunswick short fiction and poetry prize winner. Jane's short story, "The Bedclothes Baby," translated by Sonya Malaborza, will appear in a French language anthology of Canadian short stories, and her current project is a novel set on White Head Island, New Brunswick.
