Today is National Truth and Reconciliation Day, one that's always on our minds. We think about our grandparents, great-grandparents, Our mothers and fathers, and our kids. They're the reason why everything we do is rooted in their teachings.

We need to bring awareness and hear stories from our grassroots people. At Moccasin Trails, we provide authentic Indigenous experiences that are rooted in culture and education. Our hope is that through these experiences, people will begin to open up their minds and hearts to the importance of reconciliation.

๐Ÿงก Every Child Matters starts with the next generation.
๐Ÿงก Every Child Matters starts with the Indian Trial.
๐Ÿงก Every Child Matters starts with education and awareness, so that we can begin to heal the wounds of the past.

๐Ÿ™Œ Thank you Indigeno Travel for the feature!

Itโ€™s National Tourism Week!

Itโ€™s more important than ever to celebrate and champion our rich industry after two extremely difficult years. This week, letโ€™s share our favourite destinations and tourism businesses across the country!

Today weโ€™re showcasing our friends at Moccasin Trails:

โ€œWe want to bring people from around the world on the ancestral paths our people walked, have them taste the food we ate, sing the songs we sang, hear the stories that were passed down orally from generations ago, and travel down the rivers we canoed. In order to truly learn about our culture, we felt the only way was to touch, smell, see, hear, and feel it. Our journey started hundreds of years ago but your journey will start right now with us at Moccasin Trails.โ€

Tourism is coming backโ€ฆ and with Indigenous tourism being the fastest growing sector in Canadaโ€™s tourism industry (pre-COVID), it plays a majorly important role in building back better and taking action towards reconciliation.

โ€œSome of our best growers are Indigenous and live in our Indigenous communities. Now, if we can provide benefits to our communities through growing and farming (that would be great),โ€ ~ Greg Hopf, Co-owner of Moccasin Trails Consulting

โ€œThereโ€™s just so many benefits that we can bring into our Indigenous communities, and, at the end of the day, cannabis is here and itโ€™s not going away. If we, as Indigenous owners, growers, if we donโ€™t take advantage of this, someone else will. Why not us?โ€

Moccasin Trails is humbled and honoured to be recognized by the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce by winning the inaugural โ€˜Indigenous Business of the Year' Award. The 34th Business Excellence Awards was a very special evening to celebrate โ€˜Rockin' Resilienceโ€™! Greg, along with his wife, Sharon, accepted the award on behalf of Moccasin Trails, while Frank participated in a reconciliation ceremony in Willams Lake.

There are so many people that we share this award with; our Elders, Guides, Knowledge Keepers, tourism organizations (Indigenous Tourism Canada, Indigenous Tourism BC, and the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association), partners, cultural grassroots community members, and most importantly, our families. Thank you to all of these incredible people and our Moccasin Trails community for your support!

We are so proud of the work we do. Through education, we feel we are breaking down stereotypes of Indigenous people. All the facilitated workshops we are hired to do, the tours we lead with our guests and tourists, and the public speaking we doโ€ฆ these all have an educational message to our clients that comes from our hearts and souls.

Wekykt! Wecweytp Preswa. Ren sqweqwst, Stuctews te Secwepemculw.

โ€œHello Everyone! Frank is my name. I come from Bonaparte, which is part of the Shuswap Nation.โ€

As an Indigenous person, our DNA is our land, and our connection to our land is our language. Today, letโ€™s celebrate ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—œ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜† by learning 1 new word for the next 365 days.

A Secwepemctsรญn language lesson for today:
๐—ž๐˜‚๐—ธ๐˜„๐˜€๐˜๐˜€รฉ๐˜๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฐ - โ€œThank youโ€
๐— ๐—ฒ๐Ÿณ ๐˜„รญ๐—ธ๐˜€๐˜๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ป - โ€œSee youโ€

- - -
As language is so important, we are thinking about finding a new name for โ€˜Moccasin Trails Consulting.โ€™ โ€˜Consulting,โ€™ is a colonial word, so weโ€™d like to move away from this, to find something that better connects with our language and culture. But, what may be a suitable word in my language, for example, helping others, โ€˜๐—ž๐—ป๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜„โ€™ [K-new-went-twa], is a different word in Gregโ€™s Chipewyn language. Itโ€™s not a simple change, however, we look forward to sharing more with you as we work towards finding the right word(s) that resonate with what we are doing. We welcome your thoughts.
