The Canadian Wildlife Photography of the Year Competition 2024 is officially LIVE!🎉
Last year we had 14,500 entries (an all-time record), so let's see if we can get 15,000 (or more) this year!😉
Introducing the categories:
Things with wings🦅🦋🦇: We’re looking for birds and bees — plus butterflies, bats, bugs and more. If it flies through the air, it belongs in this category.
Aquatic life🌊🐳🐟: From tide pools to ponds, rivers to oceans, water is teeming with — and essential to — life. We want to see your best shots of fishes and kelp fronds, whales and wading birds.
Terrestrial life🐻🐺🦊: From iconic predators like bears and wolves to majestic and elusive ungulates like moose and caribou to common-yet-charismatic mammals like foxes and squirrels, we’re looking for great images of Canada’s diverse land animals — and the habitats they depend on.
Flora and fungi🌲🍄🌱: Interest in plants, trees, lichens and fungi is mushrooming (see what we did there?). We’re looking for creative shots revealing non-animal wildlife and the roles they play in their respective ecosystems.
Click the link below to enter! The competition will end at 11:59 p.m., Eastern Time on July 31, 2024.

Did you know that the last whaling station in British Columbia closed its doors back in 1967? For decades, the sight of Humpback whales was rare due to the devastating impact of whaling. 😔🐋
But now, we have a second chance to ensure their survival and understand their importance in our oceans. In 2023, 98 individual humpback whales were identified in the waters of northeastern Vancouver Island! 🐋💚
Have you been lucky enough to observe a humpback whale in the wild? 🌊

To celebrate the official start of spring, we're sharing this fantastic perspective from Campbell River Whale Watching as to why bears are such vital members of our ecosystems! 👇
Bears are more than just a symbol of the wild; they are key players in maintaining the health and balance of our environment. Here's why they're indispensable:
🐟 Forest Fertilizers: By moving salmon carcasses and leaving s**t, bears naturally enrich our forests, promoting growth and resilience.
🌱 Seed Spreaders: Enjoying fruits and nuts, bears disperse seeds, aiding in forest diversity and regeneration.
🦌 Balance Keepers: As predators and scavengers, bears help control animal populations, ensuring ecological balance.
📸 Economic Contributors: The allure of bear watching supports tourism and local economies, highlighting the need for conservation.
🐾 Cultural Icons: Bears have inspired myths and traditions worldwide, reflecting their deep impact on human culture and imagination.
🌎💚 By protecting bears and their habitats, we safeguard the health of our planet and ensure these majestic creatures continue to inspire and thrive alongside us.
🔵 Campbell River is nestled within the territory of the Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ peoples; the We Wai Kai, Wei Wai K*m, and Kwiakah Nations.

A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE WITH GRIZZLY BEARS IN TOBA INLET
Klahoose Coastal Adventures is a First Nation owned and operated wildlife touring company. Our local Klahoose First Nation guides hail from the traditional territory of the Toba Valley, on the West Coast of British Columbia, Canada.
FOR 25 YEARS, TOBA INLET LAY CLOSED, ITS LOGGING ROADS ABANDONED, AND THE VALLEY LEFT TO THE WHIMS OF NATURE.
Only in recent years have people ventured back into the valley. Six kilometers up a gravel road lies the Klite River, a beautiful turquoise tributary river to the main Toba River. The Klite River fills with salmon each fall and the grizzly bears come down from the mountains to enjoy their fill. It is the aim of Klahoose Coastal Adventures to provide an intimate experience for a select few guests to witness this fall spectacle.
“SMALL TOUR GROUPS PRESERVE THE SERENITY OF THE KLITE RIVER HABITAT.”
Following the trip into Toba Inlet with its steep walls and waterfalls thundering into the sea. Our team of experienced Klahoose First Nation guides will greet your guests with traditional Coast Salish hospitality dockside at the head of the Inlet. Guests are transported up the valley in a mini-bus, to the bear viewing areas on this river. There are six bear viewing platforms along the river allowing visitors to become one of the privileged few to witness the mighty Toba Inlet Grizzly Bears going about their fall ritual of feeding themselves on the returning salmon.
Xaweges or Grizzly Bear, return each August for the annual salmon run in Toba Inlet. A cycle that has taken place for a millennial on the traditional territory of the Klahoose First Nation. Grizzly Bear Viewing Tours depart daily from Campbell River, BC from mid August to mid October.
Multi-day bear tour packages are also availble with stays at our Klahoose Wilderness Resort, located in spectacular Desolation Sound.
