We usually say the vineyard shuts down in the winter, but that's not really true.

The vines selected for next year's growth have been tied down and buried under soil, insulating them from freezing temperatures. But what remains above ground still needs to be cleared for Spring.

Cutting these vines in the cold, dormant months helps reduce injury to the plant. It's also crucial to complete this work before the vines wake up in early Spring, giving us a few short months to prune over 40 acres by hand.

We choose days cold enough that we can walk on the frozen mud between the rows, but warm and dry enough that the outside work is bearable.

When our seasonal vineyard workers return in a couple of months, they'll pull the prunings out and mulch them back into the soil, creating a closed loop in our vineyard microbiome ♻️

Monarchs are not the only ones on the move! During the fall, thousands of "woolly bear" caterpillars brave the roadways in search of a winter home. The Isabella tiger moth (pictured) overwinters amongst the leaf litter and withstands freezing temperatures during its hibernation. There are many species of "woolly bear" caterpillars, with many being found in the Erebidae moth family.

To keep these caterpillars safe, be extra alert on roads and trails for any crossing critters! You can also help at home or on your campsite by preserving leaf litter and deadwood.

Happy everyone!

Baby turtle season is now upon us! This Snapping turtle had recently hatched from its egg and was one of 41 snapping turtles that were monitored by park staff to ensure they safely made it to the water. All species of turtles can bite, but most have a first line of defense, which is hiding in their shell. However, Snapping turtles cannot retract into their shell, so they only have one line of defense, which is biting. If you see a turtle on the road, make sure it is safe to help it first, and then move it in the direction it's facing.
