Starting on April 2nd, 2024, West Coast Transit, a new regional public transportation service, was launched and connect the communities of Ucluelet, Tofino, hitac̓u, Ty-Histanis, and Esowista seven days a week, except for statutory holidays.

The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District Government (ACRD), along with PWTransit and its West Coast Committee, as well as First Nations, municipalities, and agencies, have collaborated to develop an interim public transit service. The goal of this service is to connect the District of Tofino and the Resort Municipality of Ucluelet, as well as intervening ACRD Electoral Area “C” and Parks Canada areas.

There is also an option to connect to the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government community of Hitacu. Unfortunately, the implementation of a BC Transit-administered service on the West Coast has been postponed due to the provincial share of funding being unavailable. Therefore, the ACRD has been working with PWTransit to develop an interim public transit service. This service is meant to be a basic level of service that can be locally funded and developed with the support and involvement of key community, transportation, health, and hospitality stakeholders in the area.

The addition of this new service, along with several other successful contracts this year for transit, is a testament to our people and the hard work they put in to meet the expectations of both customers and companies. We look forward to growing with the ACRD, and we thank you for trusting PWTransit with moving your customers.

We have more employee shout outs to share!!

"Upon reading a local newspaper on an early Friday afternoon, Bill became aware of a road closure (due to construction) that was to take effect Monday morning. We had no advance notice from the city and had to look at how that would affect service to our ridership.

Had we not been given the heads up by Bill, our drivers would have navigated the tight and upwardly winding hill only to have run into an area where the bus would not have been able to turn and would have been stuck in an unsafe situation to back down the steep winding hill.

Bill's effort to notify us helped to create a limited route to the area that would still serve some of our ridership and helped to prevent our driver from being faced with this unknown situation on a Monday morning.

Thank you Bill for your effort and care." - Alan-Michael

"I appreciate Matt D. He always comes to work with a smile and puts up with all of my apprentice questions. I appreciate him greatly because I would not be the mechanic I am today if it wasn’t for all of the valuable knowledge he’s taught me, about busses but even with life and coaching me to be a better person." - Thomas

🧡💛💜

"I appreciate the entire Paratransit crew in Hazelton, B.C. Drivers Guy, Robert, Danny, Andy & Chris. This league of extraordinary fine gentlemen run mostly independently and ensure the transit service is on time and service is always provided with a smile. - Luis

PWTransit Recognizes 2024 Transit Driver Appreciation Week!
Every March 18th marks the beginning of Transit Driver Appreciation Week, a time when everyone is encouraged to show appreciation to the thousands of transit operators who work tirelessly to keep our communities running smoothly.

The Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) is extending its recognition with a full week of gratitude until March 25th. Each year, transit systems, businesses, riders, and elected officials recognize and thank Canada's dedicated public transit staff. In Calgary alone, there are nearly 2,500 Calgary Transit operators who transport millions of Calgarians around the city each year.

Take a moment to thank and appreciate your transit driver for a job well done. As you know, transit drivers make an important contribution to the communities they serve.
For starters, they ensure the safety of transit travellers, keep track of the stops, inform passengers of delays, collect fares, and have the ultimate responsibility of dropping passengers off at the correct location. Moreover, these transportation professionals also perform basic vehicle maintenance to ensure their vehicle is in good working order at the start of their shift.

It's hard to imagine a world without them! Navigating our towns and cities would be much more challenging without transit drivers and public transportation.

Transit Driver Appreciation Week is a wonderful opportunity to show them how grateful we are for the service they provide.

Today is International Women's Day. As we celebrate the nearly 100,000 amazing women that work in the transportation industry across Canada, and all the women in our lives, PWT would like to profile the journey of Liz Vomastic, Lead Hand at Southland Edmonton's 17th Street Shop.
"I’ve been with Southland for five years now, I’m a red seal journeyman automotive service technician and lead hand at our 17th street shop in Edmonton.
I was a school bus driver when my girls were babies, and when they started school, I knew I wanted to work full-time and support them. I had a crazy idea that if I could drive a school bus, I could probably learn how to fix them as well.
Having zero mechanical background meant that it was hard to get a foot in the door. That’s where Women Building Futures came in. I did a 17-week program with them which was called “journeywoman start” (now renamed journey to trades) and this gave me several safety tickets and hands on experience with basic hand and power tools, as well as a change to try out different trades and get a feel for a trades environment.
I got my first shop job when I finished in 2015 and I guess the rest is history. I’ve been working on school busses for nine years total now and I love it so much.
I’m now working/volunteering as an ambassador for Women Building Futures to promote the skilled trades as a viable career choice for girls and women. I’m also very vocal about promoting the trades as an option for neurodiverse individuals as well as I am autistic/adhd myself and I feel that many of my traits/quirks have contributed to my success - as well as the support from my team in Edmonton."
Thank you Liz, for sharing your story today.

Each of them receiving a paid day off where a Manager did their shift for them, thus donating their time in lieu to help the less fortunate.

PWTransit's Stuff the Bus Fundraiser Brings in More Than 1,200 Pounds of Donations in Port Alberni

On December 2nd, the good people of Port Alberni were asked to ‘stuff the bus’ with donations for the Alberni Valley Community Food Bank, and they answered the call to the tune of 1,235 pounds of food and toys!

Employees from PWTransit brought a bus to the Walmart parking lot, and members of the public were given the opportunity to fill the bus with donations. Volunteers from the AV Lions Club as well as Santa and Manny the Elf were on hand to thank everyone for their generosity.

Operations supervisor Kathy Deschamps said volunteers collected more than $1,000 in cash and gift card donations as well.

13/12/2023

PW Transit Canada is disappointed that the members of Unifor Local 114 have rejected a second tentative Collective Bargaining Agreement which was arrived at on December 5th and unanimously recommended by the Union bargaining committee.

The company understands that many residents will be negatively impacted by the disruption to transit services, especially leading into the holiday season. We can report, however, that PWT and the Union have settled on an essential services agreement, which will enable us to continue to provide HandyDART service for customers with medical and other critical appointments..

The Union’s rejection of this tentative CBA follows the previous tentative agreement on November 21st also recommended by the Union bargaining committee for approval.

The company believes we have taken every measure to come to an agreement at the bargaining table and avoid a strike situation.

The tentative deal of December 5th offered a small increase in compensation over and above the first tentative agreement and represents a higher guaranteed total percentage increase to wages than the BC Public Sector Union employees recently received over a similar three year period. It amounted to a more than 18% overall compensation increase in 3 years, with a total increase to wages of 15.5%.

Unfortunately, right now we are not able to offer a timeline for a return to regular bus service. However, we will continue to use any means at our disposal in the collective bargaining process to bring the labor disruption to an end as soon as possible.

27/10/2023

On October 14th, we gathered at the Mariott Hotel to honour and celebrate the remarkable milestones achieved by three esteemed Prince George Transit veteran drivers.

Randy Briggs has provided an astounding 45 years of dedicated service, Jack Dally was honoured for 40 years behind the wheel, and Lou Zerebeski was recognized for his 28 years of commitment. The families of the honourees, as well as Prince George Transit staff, were invited to help mark these significant achievements.

The special evening featured a formal buffet-style dinner, inspiring speeches, and the presentation of gift awards from Prince George Transit, Pacific Western Group of Companies and BC Transit. It was a wonderful opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to these remarkable individuals and share great moments with the drivers we hold in high esteem.

Our PGT management team of Kathy McMillan, Chris Holbrook, Franklin Balolong, Sam Campbell and Denis Litvinov were joined by James Vine, Vice President of PWT Transit, to help celebrate the incredible contributions of our veteran drivers.

It was also great to see BC Transit Regional Operations Manager Sheryl Stevens and City of Prince George Transit Planner Michael Coulson join the celebration.

Watch the video to see a slideshow of a truly special night.

Krista Gates, Dispatcher at Whistler Transit and nominee for the 2022 R.B. Colborne Award of Excellence, was recently featured in the May edition of BC Transit's 'Connections' Newsletter. You can check out the article below. Congratulations Krista!

Regional Transit Profile: Krista Gates from Whistler Transit

Krista Gates is a valued member of the Whistler Transit family. She has been excelling in her role for several years and ‘loves her job’ by her own admission. Not even the biggest personal and professional challenge of her life could deter Krista from a successful and inspiring career with Whistler Transit.

The first airplane that Krista ever flew on landed her in Whistler from her home in Halifax and she never looked back. She worked with Zipline Tours and Whistler Connections prior to choosing a career with Whistler Transit in 2018. Krista began as a Dispatcher and Social Media Coordinator and loved her job immediately.

Whistler is a wonderful fit for Krista because she loves nature. Hiking and camping have been part of her life since she was a small child. Krista also finds music very important in her life, as a calming influence that brings her peace. You will always find Krista with a set of headphones in her ears.

In the fall of 2020 Krista’s life changed forever. She began feeling unwell and sought medical attention on several occasions. After multiple appointments and ER visits, Krista was diagnosed as having had a stroke. Krista realized the extent of her circumstance when testing began. She had lost all her peripheral vision, her ability to read, and most of her general functions such as cooking, cleaning and bathing. Her driver’s license was taken away. This was an extremely challenging period in Krista’s life.

The road to recovery demonstrated Krista’s resiliency and perseverance. The next 20 months were spent re-learning basic knowledge and functions, such as colours and animal names. Since her stroke, she also developed a fear of noises and large groups. Krista had to develop new strategies to help her function at work. She uses earphones to drown out the office distractions and electronic devices to read text back to her to ensure the wording on her emails is correct. Each day continues to present challenges, and each day Krista faces them with a positive attitude and a quiet strength.

Krista’s ability to connect and empathize with customers separates her from others. She treats every person ‘in the way you would want them to treat you, or your parents.’ Krista’s life experience has provided her perspective and her desire to help others is great. The Regional Operations Manager for BC Transit is adamant that Krista is one of the most talented customer service staff in the province.

”My stroke was one of the most difficult things I have ever gone through – it sucked. But it also made me who I am today. I take nothing for granted and truly appreciate so much more in life,” said Krista Gates. ”My message to everyone is to never take anything for granted. Live life to the fullest. Make memories and don’t have regrets.’

Thanks for everything you do, Krista! You’re an inspiration to us all.

If you’re easily amoosed, then you’ll want to hear all about how a young moose made a surprise stop at our Dawson Creek Transit Facility today.

Fortunately, there was no wild moose chase to remove the creature from the shop, and he left without incident.

Everyone was fine… we promoose!

We have no idea who the four-legged intruder was, as he wanted to remain anony-moose.

PWTransit Driver ‘The Flowerman’ Recognized for Having a Big Heart by Comox Valley High School

Anyone who lives in the Comox Valley and rides the bus knows who Transit Operator JD Ludlow is. But they’re more likely to know him as ‘The Flowerman’. This character, filled to the brim with community spirit, has been lifting people up and making them smile for the past three years.

And his good deeds and infectious attitude have now officially been recognized by Highland Secondary School, who presented The Flowerman with the Highland Has Heart Award on March 1st.

JD Ludlow moved to the Comox Valley from Manitoba in 2019. He’s overcome a lot of personal challenges, including homelessness, anxiety and depression, and sees it as a personal mission to help others feel joy. His random acts of kindness started off with Lei Day on May 5, 2021, where he gave out leis to people getting on his bus.

Lei Day was started to celebrate the date of his recovery from mental illness by stringing together real flower Lei’s with a team of volunteers to live music on the beach and selling them raising money for the Comox Valley Transition Society.

His “shenanigans” as he likes to call them have grown in magnitude and infamy, and have included a community snow shoveling cavalry and multiple Valentine’s Day events, and have always involved his bus, or driving his classic 1966 yellow Mustang Convertible called Lemon-Aid.

He calls his car that because she’s yellow but certainly no lemon and Aid because I love helping others. That car also has his homemade wooden yellow kayak mounted on top that contains multiple rotating interactive travelling sculptures. This too certainly brings many smiles.

10/02/2023

When looking at building a career after finishing high school, a lot of young people overlook the trades as a viable option. Many are unaware that the trades offer high-tech jobs with good working conditions and long-term contracts - perfect for young families looking for stability and opportunity.

This week, Prince George Transit hosted a trades tour to show some high schoolers from the Career Technical Centre the inner workings and high-tech side of the transit and motorcoach industry.

Right off the bat, we showed these eager students what it’s like to work on buses and coaches. Our shop foreman, Sam Campbell, had a fault planted on the Prince George Cougars motorcoach. He then walked the class through how the operator would see the fault in the drivers compartment and file a deficiency on the drivers report.

After that, Sam demonstrated a diagnostic of the fault that included printing the wiring schematics and following the wiring in the bus to find the fault. He also led a facility tour showing how we work on buses hoisted in the air (required with low floor/air ride equipment) and our involvement in mid-life work like engine/transmission replacements on transit buses. It was a great day, and the students really got the grand tour of our shop.

Trade tours like this are important for us to host because young people interested in the trades often have no exposure to the transportation industry and overlook it when considering a line of employment. Transit and Coach work is high-tech, often clean, and very detail-oriented - providing a rich experience for someone interested in being engaged in their profession. Transit work also provides an excellent work/life balance because it is based in the city you live in, and coming home every night to the same address is essential for those with young families.

Finally, trades offer above-average wages and a career path to young people that affords them a lifestyle that would otherwise not be possible without years of post-secondary education. High school students are usually surprised to find that sponsored apprenticeships include pay while in school and all tuition/books costs covered for a Red Seal apprenticeship program.

We look forward to hosting many more students to get the word out that an apprenticeship in the trades can lead to a successful and satisfying career in transportation.
