🌟 Canadian Museums Presents: The Museum of the Day! 🌟

Step back in time with Canadian Museums as we spotlight Vancouver's oldest building: the Old Hastings Mill Store Museum.
Originally constructed in 1865 near Gastown, this historic structure served as a general store for sawmill workers. Remarkably, it survived the Great Vancouver Fire of 1886, standing as the city's sole remaining 19th-century building.
In 1930, the building was relocated by barge to its current site at 1575 Alma Street in Hastings Mill Park. Since 1932, it has operated as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into Vancouver's rich past.

Inside, you'll find a diverse collection of artifacts, including:
🛳️ Items from the 1836 steamship SS Beaver
🪑 Vancouver's first city council table
🧺 A fine array of First Nations basketry and carvings

Each exhibit tells a unique story, connecting you to the city's early days and its cultural heritage.

📅 Please note: The museum is currently closed for regular hours until February 2025. For the latest updates and visiting hours, check their official website or social media channels.

Discover the enduring legacy of Vancouver at the Old Hastings Mill Store Museum—a true testament to the city's resilience and history.

Press Release
January 6, 2025

We Stand with the Whale Interpretive Centre

It is with deep sadness that we share the tragic news of the fire that consumed the Whale Interpretive Centre in Telegraph Cove, British Columbia, on the morning of December 31, 2024. This beloved institution, home to an extraordinary collection of marine mammal skeletons, was a beacon of education, conservation, and marine heritage for countless visitors.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the first responders from Port McNeill, Port Hardy, Alert Bay, and Hyde Creek for their extraordinary bravery in facing this devastating event.

The loss is profound, but the resilience of the Telegraph Cove community and the leadership of the Whale Interpretive Centre give us hope. They have launched a fundraising campaign to rebuild and create a new home for marine education and conservation. If you feel moved to contribute, please visit their official fundraising page: WIC Recovery from the Fire.
https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/wic-recovery-from-the-fire/

At Canadian Museums, we are committed to supporting the Whale Interpretive Centre as they work towards their goal of raising $1 million to rebuild. Stay tuned as we collaborate on future initiatives to help them restore this vital cultural treasure.

Together, we can honor their legacy and ensure that their vision for education and conservation lives on.
