Our new exhibit:

No Walk in the Woods: The History of the West Coast Trail

is OPEN! 🎉🌲🥾

A landscape of forbidding bluffs and nearly impassible brush, punctuated by the ominous sound of crashing waves, hardly seems like the route to salvation for anyone escaping a sinking ship. For those unlucky enough to find themselves in just that situation along the unforgiving southwestern edge of Vancouver Island, the rough trail over slick rocks and fallen trees may have been their only chance.
The 75 km stretch of coastline from Bamfield to Port Renfrew has evolved from a narrow telegraph track carved into the woods to one of the most popular hiking destinations in less than a century.
Come along with us as we follow the rain-soaked path from the tragic wreck of the S.S. Valencia, that led to the creation of the lifesaving trail, to the stories of adventurers who brave the modern-day West Coast Trail. Meet some of the characters who devoted themselves to helping others, sometimes at great personal cost, and learn what was done to try to prevent a small portion of the Graveyard of the Pacific from claiming even more lives.

Layritz Park is perhaps best known for its sports interests, which includes 7 ball diamonds, a soccer field with an artificial surface, and a 9 hole disc golf course. However, it also includes some beautiful natural areas with Garry oak forests, stands of Douglas fir and in the spring, gorgeous displays of wildflowers. https://visitorinvictoria.ca/layritz-park/

🔹Vancouver Island bus company to begin services from Victoria to Port Hardy in May, and here’s how much it will cost🔹

Vancouver Islanders will once again see Island-wide public transport with the launch of a new route network this May by an Island-based bus operator. The fare will be $99.99 to travel from the Capital to Port Hardy, and other destinations are also on the roster. More from Island Link Bus:

IslandLink will start serving northern Vancouver Island communities this spring.

The bus company's new service begins May 16, 2024 and will connect Port Hardy, Port McNeill and Campbell River, to the rest of IslandLink's extensive Vancouver Island routes.

"We know northern Vancouver Island is currently underserved with bus transportation," says Phillip Morgan, owner of IslandLink. "That's why we are pleased to extend our reliable and efficient bus service to this area, as it will benefit both local residents and visitors to the north Island."

This new service to Port Hardy will also provide a Vancouver Island bus transportation connection option for those who travel on northern BC Ferries routes, for example from Bella Coola and Prince Rupert to Port Hardy.

"This service enhances the opportunities for our customers all over Vancouver Island Island to enjoy a seamless journey from community to community," adds Morgan.

The 230-kilometre route is three hours each way between Campbell River, Port McNeill and Port Hardy. Two buses will operate the route - one northbound and one southbound each day. IslandLink already offers bus service between Campbell River and communities to the south as far as Victoria.

Customers can start making their reservations between Campbell River and Port Hardy now at this booking link.

One-way fares are:

Port Hardy/Campbell River - $74.99
Port Hardy/Courtenay - $79.99
Port Hardy/Nanaimo - $86.99
Port Hardy/Port Alberni - $94.99
Port Hardy/Victoria - $99.99

For information on fares, schedules and availability, and to make or cancel bookings, visit the IslandLink website at www.islandlinkbus.com. Bookings can be made online until midnight of the day before travel. Passengers who are unable or who do not wish to book online, can pay their cash fare to the driver, space permitting. Every time a customer books a seat, iPOINTS are awarded that can be used towards another ticket. Details on the reward program are on the website.
