Dear Friends and Supporters,
I hope this message finds you well. As you may know, the recent war has left many families and children in Goma in desperate conditions. Our center, Initiative Best Africa, which has been a safe haven for homeless and at-risk children, was severely devastated during the conflict. Many children who once relied on our support are now suffering on the streets, with no shelter, food, or access to basic necessities.
We are reaching out to people of goodwill to help us rebuild and provide urgent support to these children. Your contribution—whether in the form of food, clothing, educational materials, equipment for the center, or financial support—can make a life-changing difference for them.
Every act of kindness counts. If you are willing to assist or know someone who can, please reach out to us. Together, we can restore hope and give these children a chance for a better future.
For donations or more information, please contact us at [email protected]
Thank you for your compassion and generosity. Warm regards,
Diem MURHULA

# Environmental Health Crisis in DR Congo Cities: A Call to Action

# Growing Urban Crisis

The Democratic Republic of Congo's cities are facing a severe environmental and public health emergency.* Our urban centers, including Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, Goma, Bukavu and Kisangani, are struggling with mounting pollution and sanitation challenges that threaten both human health and our natural environment.

Challenges

# Management Crisis
- Inadequate waste collection services have led to widespread illegal dumping in streets and waterways
- Only 13% of waste in Kinshasa, our capital city, is properly collected and disposed of
- Uncollected garbage creates breeding grounds for disease vectors like mosquitoes and rats
- Plastic waste clogs drainage systems, leading to flooding during rainy seasons.

Health Impacts

The consequences of urban pollution are severe:
- Increased respiratory diseases, especially among children
- Higher rates of waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid
- Skin conditions from contact with contaminated water
- Long-term health effects from exposure to toxic substances

Call to Action

# Individual Actions
1. Properly dispose of household waste
2. Reduce plastic usage and reuse materials when possible
3. Report illegal dumping to local authorities
4. Participate in community cleanup initiatives
5. Practice proper sanitation and hygiene

In cities across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), cleanliness and pollution are critical challenges. Rapid urbanization, insufficient waste management infrastructure, and a lack of public awareness have led to significant environmental issues. In major urban centers like Kinshasa, Goma, and Lubumbashi, uncollected garbage often piles up in streets and waterways, contributing to air and water pollution. This problem is exacerbated by the inadequate infrastructure to process waste, lack of recycling facilities, and limited governmental regulation or enforcement regarding pollution controls.

The challenges of pollution are further compounded by the widespread use of informal dumpsites, illegal disposal methods, and open burning of waste. Plastic pollution is particularly severe in river systems, with plastics clogging drains and causing flooding during the rainy season. Air quality is also compromised by traffic congestion, vehicle emissions, and informal industrial activity that emits pollutants without filtration.
