Be one of the few to immerse in Earth's last pristine forest, the Congo Basin on a journey

Repost:

What a thrilling way to reach our next camp! After a village visit, we boarded kayaks to paddle along beautiful waterways and through thundershowers before wading the last stretch to Lango Lodge and a fresh G&T.

It may sound like quite the trek, but both rain and water were wonderfully warm, and the entire experience was absolutely incredible, taking immersive safaris to the next level.

Up close, it’s quiet, textured, grounded, raw.
From above, it’s vast, wild, infinite, unfiltered.

That’s Odzala. Both deeply personal and impossibly wide.

In the heart of the Republic of the Congo lies Odzala-Kokoua National Park, an ancient rainforest that breathes life into our planet. Towering trees, misty canopies, and secret forest clearings called bais create a world where time slows and nature takes centre stage.

This is one of Earth’s lungs. Part of the Congo Basin, Odzala’s rainforest absorbs vast amounts of carbon, helps regulate our climate, and shelters some of the rarest species on the planet, from forest elephants to western lowland gorillas.

It’s wild. It’s powerful. And it’s worth protecting, for its beauty, for its mystery, and for all of us.

When darkness falls over the Congo Basin, a very different world comes alive. Our night walks and safaris offer a rare chance to experience the forest’s secretive residents, the Nocturnal 5.

🌑 Potto (Perodicticus potto)
Moving slowly like a sloth, this tree-dwelling primate has a strong grip and large, reflective eyes that shine in the dark.

🌑 Demidoff’s Dwarf Galago (Galagoides demidoff)
A tiny bush baby with powerful jumps and big, soulful eyes that make you feel like it’s looking right into your soul.

🌑 Palm Civet (Nandinia binotata)
A slender, tree-climbing predator that hunts with quiet stealth and graceful moves under the cover of night.

🌑 Derby’s Anomalure (Anomalurus derbianus)
Also known as Lord Derby’s scaly-tailed squirrel, this incredible little creature can glide up to 250 meters through the treetops.

🌑 Water Cevrotain (Hyemoschus aquaticus)
A shy, unusual mouse-deer that prefers water-logged spots like forest clearings called bais.

These elusive creatures remind us how much life thrives beyond what meets the eye. When night falls and the forest hums with quiet energy, you’re invited to step softly into a world few get to witness.

True or False?

Brazzaville and Kinshasa are the closest capital cities in the world, separated by the world’s deepest river.

True! These two capital cities, Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo and Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, are located just across the Congo River from each other. They are the closest pair of national capitals anywhere on the planet.

What makes this even more remarkable is the river that divides them, the Congo River is the world’s deepest river, reaching depths of over 220 meters (720 feet). This mighty river is a vital lifeline for the region, rich in biodiversity and cultural history.

Next time you think about Africa’s geography, remember this unique duo of capitals connected and separated by one of the world’s most impressive natural wonders.

The magnificent and elusive bongo is the largest antelope found in the forests of Odzala. On the camera traps, we had the incredible privilege of capturing a herd emerging from the forest and walking along one of the open paths that cross through the seasonally flooded woodlands.

We don’t often get the opportunity to see these rusty-coloured creatures, so spotting large herds and witnessing such a thriving population is always a welcome sight.

If you’ve been craving something deeper, something real, this is where it begins.

You step into the Congo Basin, one of the last truly wild places on Earth.

You walk ancient forest paths, tracking western lowland gorillas.

You paddle through quiet river channels, where the only sounds are birds overhead and the dip of your paddle in the water.

You stand in open baĂŻs, watching elephants move through the trees, no vehicles, no crowds, just you and the wild.

This isn’t about ticking boxes.
It’s slow, it’s immersive, and it stays with you.

“The beauty of this place defies words, but it’s the untamed, adventurous spirit that truly steals your soul.” – Toby Pheasant, Bonamy Private Travel

Not everyone will come here.
But if you do, you won’t forget it.

“One of the rarest sightings of my life.

On this afternoon, two other guides and I went out to collect camera trap footage from a few cameras placed around the park. Pedro, one of the guides, asked, “Aren’t you going to bring your camera? We are going to see chimps.” I laughed and said no, seeing a chimpanzee here is such a rare sighting.

After collecting footage, we were heading back to the last camera in an area called Chimp Alley. As we got close, Pedro spotted a dark shape far down the road. He immediately switched off the engine, and everyone grabbed their binoculars to see what it was.

A chimp! To everyone’s surprise. The female chimp slowly walked down the road towards our game viewer, getting as close as five meters away. We realised she was blind, which is why she didn’t run off as soon as we saw her, but nevertheless, it was my first sighting of such an amazing animal. Getting up close to a wild chimp like that was truly breathtaking.” –

This is what makes Kamba so special, the unexpected moments, the raw beauty of nature, and the deep connection to the wild that stays with you forever.
