Late night mining in Lango baï 🐘 Field guide Kerri recenyly caught up with these elephants mining for minerals! "This is quite an incredible spectacle to be able to listen and watch with the help of night vision."
According to her there is lots of "grumbling, groaning, trumpeting, and dinosaur like shrills".
Another magical scene in the Congo Basin!

It’s true when they say the forest is full of surprises…
This is footage from a camera trap set by Pedro and Nicole on Hippo Trail last week that captured a leopard cub playing with mum. Just amazing!
Thanks Nicole and Pedro for the clip.

To see a forest elephant in the wild is always special, but to see one so close, so peaceful and so utterly content is breath-taking…
Thank you Brendon for the video!

We had a chuckle at this #FieldNoteFriday sighting from the Hippo Trail camera trap – what do you think these chimpanzee were thinking when they caught sight of the camera hidden in the leaves?!
Aside from that, we were also delighted to see the chimps on film! The Hippo Trail camera trap is next to the Lekoli River, in a patch of forest that winds its way along the banks, and is probably one of the best places to seek out chimpanzee.
Enjoy!

This week’s #FieldNoteFriday sighting comes from our Lekoli camera trap and we were delighted to see one of the forest’s most elusive creatures – the bongo. Despite being the largest of the antelope species, they are very timid and easily frightened. If they feel threatened, or unsure of even a small movement, they will run away, seek cover, and stand still and alert with their backs to the disturbance.
Considering this, a sighting of one is a very special moment indeed and we are delighted to have caught this one on the camera trap!

This week’s #FieldNoteFriday sighting is an inquisitive Yellow-backed duiker from the Lekoli camera trap. The largest of all the duiker species, they take their name from the long whitish-yellow to orange hair that stands erect on their backs. Interestingly, their tails are almost constantly in motion and each movement looks like a tiny torch being switched on and off in the forest gloom.

This #FieldNoteFriday brings us a (brief!) sighting of a chimpanzee from the Lekoli camera trap. Watching chimps in the wild is fascinating and you will often spot them using ‘tools’ when feeding, such as leaves for mopping up blood from prey, and using sticks to 'fish' for termites. They are omnivorous and their diet is usually made up of fruit, termites and other insects, but groups of chimpanzees may also hunt small mammals, including duikers and small monkeys.

Close encounters at Odzala National Park
Our guides are trained to handle close encounters with wildlife at every turn.
However it is with both mutual trust that humans and animals can be free in the wild where we all belong.
Forest Elephants in Odzala- Kokua National Park
The gentle giants of the Congo Basin.
The IUCN has now confirmed Forest Elephants as critically endangered. And listed as a separate species to that of the African Elephant species.
And with this, we feel fortunate enough to encounter them regularly and appreciate now more than ever the footage we have with these gentle giants within Odzala- Kokoua National park.
Red river hogs- Odzala Discovery Camps
Nothing here to see but a sweet little family of red river hogs this #fieldnotefriday. Caught in the act along a stream close to the Lekoli River.
They mark their territory on frequently used paths, using their tusks to scrape tree trunks, and their foot, neck and preorbital glands near their eyes to scent mark. Their big, predominant ears make them look rather eye catching and somewhat comical! Watching footage like this is always interesting, as we of course cannot always understand what these creatures are thinking...
What do you see when watching it?
Forest Elephants in Odzala- Kokoua National Park
Our manager Raphaël de Laage recently designated our camera traps to a new area found on the Lekoli River Crossing, opposite Hippo Trail. And it is revealing to us all of the animal goodness that we are needing right now. This footage shows a small group of Forest Elephants with their young calf in the stream. Inquisitive and shy, these elusive animals want to know what our camera is all about. We see you and we know you see us forest friends.
It's just another casual day on the Lekoli river for us...
You might be minding your business in your kayak. When out wanders a family of Forest Elephants walking along the riverbank before your very eyes.😀
