The wooden slats and the metal structure have been removed, and work on the pontoon, where the statue of Freddie Mercury was originally installed, is progressing well. Freddie is temporarily enjoying a new setting, just a few meters from his original location, with, of course, a magnificent view of the lake and mountains while waiting for the completion of the work. The statue will return to its usual place at the end of the Montreux Jazz Festival in July 2025.

In the meantime, feel free to visit Montreux to admire it in its temporary location. Guided tours have also resumed since the end of January, with a tour organized every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon. The frequency will increase as the warmer days arrive.

📅 Upcoming Events - On the 28th and 29th of March, Montreux will host the first two exclusive events of 2025 with Peter Freestone. As Freddie Mercury’s personal assistant for 12 years, Peter will welcome you to these exceptional moments, held in an intimate setting.

The iconic statue of Freddie Mercury has been temporarily relocated this morning to allow for major renovation work on the pier in front of it. These essential works, aimed at ensuring visitor safety and preserving the site’s aesthetics, include the complete replacement of wooden planks and repairs to the underlying metal structure.

Rather than leaving the statue amid a construction site, the municipality decided to move it a few months earlier than originally planned. The relocation, initially scheduled during the Montreux Jazz Festival, was brought forward to facilitate the progress of the work and ensure visitors can continue to admire the statue in the best possible conditions.

As in the previous edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2024, the statue has been temporarily installed in the Rouvenaz Gardens, just a few metres from its original location.

It should be noted that the Montreux Jazz Festival will be held “off-site” again this year, due to the renovation of the 2m2c convention center, which would have necessitated a temporary relocation of the statue in any case.

The statue will return to its iconic spot near a fully renovated pier at the end of the Montreux Jazz Festival, in late July 2025.

A heartfelt thank you to visitors and Freddie Mercury fans for their understanding and patience during this essential renovation period, aimed at preserving this symbolic site.

Norbert and Bazar Suisse were for us inextricably linked. We first met in the 80’s when his amazing toy and souvenir shop was an Aladdin’s cave for small people. Gradually the toys and cuckoo clocks gave way to more and more Queen gear and I doubt a Queen fan exists anywhere in the world who, if in Montreux, didn’t enter the portals of his shop...Bazar Suisse.

Norbert was a phenomenon, his zest for life, his devotion to Montreux, and his passion for Freddie Mercury and all things Queen knew no bounds. He was the custodian of the Freddie statue working tirelessly with the Commune to keep it in immaculate condition. When some lunatic painted Freddie bright green, it was Norbert who alerted the council workers at dawn and it was clean by 8.00 am.

In the ‘90s Norbert started the annual Freddie Mercury Fan Celebration which became Montreux Celebrations and the hugely successful Christmas Market was his brainchild.

We are going to miss him…his friendship, his love for Jim, and his support for the MPT gave us such a special bond. He was unique, a one-off. Thank you Norbert for being you and for your over-the-top crazy enthusiasm. We salute you.

Chers amis, chers fans de Freddie,

Beaucoup d'entre vous l'auront remarqué : cette année, Norbert Muller, fondateur de cet événement il y a plus de 20 ans, et propriétaire du Bazar Suisse n'était pas parmi nous.

C'est avec une profonde tristesse que nous vous annonçons qu'il nous a quittés paisiblement cet après-midi. Norbert n'était pas seulement l'initiateur de ce rassemblement en l'honneur de Freddie, il en était également l'âme. Chaque année, il attendait avec impatience de retrouver ses nombreux amis pour partager bien plus que de la musique : des moments d'amitié sincère et de complicité.

Ce soir, levons nos verres à sa mémoire, en hommage à tout ce qu'il a apporté à cette communauté, aux nombreuses amitiés formées grâce à cet événement, et à l'immense contribution qu'il a faite pour honorer Freddie Mercury et Queen à Montreux durant toutes ces années. Nous savons qu'il aurait aimé que nous buvions et fassions la fête à sa santé, pour ne se souvenir que des bons moments partagés ensemble.

Freddie is back at his place!
Following the dismantling of the main stage of the Montreux Jazz Festival, which was completed last Friday, the emblematic statue of Freddie Mercury returned to its place at the bottom of the Market Square this morning. Residents and visitors to Montreux can now once again admire this musical icon in all its splendour in its original location. Take the opportunity to come and see it and celebrate Freddie Mercury's legacy!
