🎄How to Find Out If Food is Gluten-Free at a Christmas Market in Zurich ⛔️
Christmas markets are magical, but navigating the food options as someone who avoids gluten can be challenging. Here’s how to ensure your food is safe while enjoying the festive atmosphere:
1. Ask the Vendor
Ask the vendor about the food in German to make sure it’s gluten-free:
• „Ist dieses Gericht glutenfrei?“ (Is this dish gluten-free?)
• „Sind Weizen, Gerste, Roggen oder Dinkel etc… enthalten?“ (Does it contain wheat, barley, rye, or spelt ezc…?)
• „Wird das in demselben Öl frittiert wie panierte Speisen?“ (Is it fried in the same oil as breaded foods?)
• „Werden dieselben Utensilien oder Oberflächen verwendet wie bei glutenhaltigen Lebensmitteln?“ (Are the same utensils or surfaces used as with gluten-containing foods?)
You can also ask them to use fresh gloves etc…
It is mandatory for them to have an allergen list / folder. So just ask for it if they do ot know the ingredients and check yourself. You can also take google translate or chat gpt translating a pocture you take of it.
If speaking German feels difficult, you can print and show this sentence:
„Ich kann kein Gluten essen. Ist dieses Gericht glutenfrei, und wurde es ohne Kontamination mit Gluten zubereitet?“
(Translation: “I cannot eat gluten. Is this dish gluten-free, and was it prepared without contamination with gluten?”)
2. Check for Gluten in Ingredients
If there’s a list of ingredients, here’s what to look out for. Gluten can be hidden under various names:
• Wheat (Weizen)
• Barley (Gerste)
• Rye (Roggen)
• Spelt (Dinkel)
• Kamut
• Triticale
• Malt (Malz)
• Flour (Mehl, e.g., Weizenmehl, Roggenmehl)
• Starch (unless labeled gluten-free, e.g., “Weizenstärke”)
• Modified food starch (can contain gluten unless specified gluten-free)
• Semolina (Grieß)
• Bran (Kleie)
• Hydrolyzed wheat protein
• Gluten (sometimes listed directly as “Gluten”)
etc… you should always have a list like that at hand to check ingredients. I did not check on completeness, if you want a complete ask me and I provide one. That‘s just meant as example.
3. Be Aware of Hidden Gluten
Some common market foods may contain gluten even if it’s not obvious, such as:
• Sausages or meatballs (breadcrumbs or wheat as a binder)
• Sauces, gravies, or soups (flour as a thickener)
• Fried foods (breaded or fried in shared oil)
• Waffles, crepes, or pancakes
4. Bring a Backup Snack
To stay safe, always keep a small gluten-free snack with you in case you can’t find something suitable.
Enjoy the Christmas market in Zurich, and happy gluten-free exploring!
