🏔️Broad Peak (originally named K3) is the 12th highest mountain on Earth, located on the border of China-Pakistan.

▶️Broad Peak is part of the Gasherbrum massif and is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) from K2.

▶️Broad Peak was originally named K3 right after the naming of K2 but on closer inspection by a later party, it was discovered that the summit was over 1½ kilometers (1 mile) long, thus “Broad Peak”.

▶️Broad Peak is known locally as Faichan Kangri. The literal translation of “Broad Peak” to Phalchan Kangri is not accepted among the Baltis.

▶️The first ascent of Broad Peak was made on June 9, 1957, by Fritz Wintersteller, Marcus Schmuck, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl of an Austrian expedition led by Marcus Schmuck.

🏆A first attempt by the team was made on May 29 where Fritz Wintersteller and Kurt Diemberger reached the forepeak (8,030m). This was also accomplished without the aid of supplemental oxygen or high altitude porters and without base camp support.

A 49-year-old Sherpa climber stood atop the world’s highest mountain for the 23rd time today becoming the only mountaineer in the world to hold the record for most summits on Mt Everest.

Winds continue to hit summit today with the sustained speed ~50-60 mph. It is expected to calm down for next couple of days. Looking forward ropes get fixed to the summit from both sides, then some summit success.

Simone Moro and Pemba quit their Manaslu winter expedition 2019.

Oggi si è aperta una finestra di bel tempo, e anche questa volta Karl Gabl ha avuto ragione. Ovviamente con il sole le valanghe sono aumentate e hanno iniziato ad arrivare al campo base.
Per fortuna poco dopo questa foto un elicottero è venuto a recuperarci.

Negli ultimi giorni l’obiettivo quinta vetta in invernale si era trasformato in restare vivi!
Ci vorrebbero 2-3 settimane di sole per assestare 6 metri di neve polverosa ma le previsioni sono tutt’altro che buone.
Mi chiamano "winter maestro" voglio onorare questo titolo con la rinuncia, difficile dopo tanta attesa ma a volte ingrediente essenziale per il successo futuro.

Finally a good weather window has opened today, and again Karl Gabl was right.
Obviously with the sun, the avalanches have increased, they also approached and reached our base camp. Fortunately shortly after this photo a helicopter came to evacuate us. Over the last few days the aim of reaching my fifth summit in winter was transformed into surving in this situation!
It would take at least 2 to 3 weeks of sunshine to settle 6 meters of powder snow, but the forecast is far from good.
Sometimes giving up is an essential ingredient for future success and with this decision I want to honor the nickname “winter maestro” I have been given.

Simone Moro is back in Nepal. Climbing with one partner only, but it will not be Tamara Lunger with who he tried to do the entire Kangchenjunga traverse.

Maybe he is going for Mt. Manaslu, his next attempt to climb an 8000m peak in winter. We assume normal route in alpine style.
