On our third visit to Puerto Rio Tranquilo we decided that this time we would have go on a tour to see the Capillas de Mármol. Chances of coming here for a fourth time are slim 😅
And as you can see, slide through the photos 👉 it was totally worth it!

A little while back we decided to install mud flaps to our front tires and only after a short drive on a dirt road, the effect is clearly visible -third photo.
Do you have mud flaps installed on all wheels?

At the feet of Cerro Castillo we visited „el Paredón de Manos“, a rock wall of about 15meters with invaluable historic heritage for the region.
The meaning of these traces left by ancestral cultures, prior to the Tehuelches, remains unknown.

A few impressions of the famous Carretera Austral as we head on south.
The drive through the lush mountains and along lakes takes us to the small town of Puyuhuapi.
The history of the small town (around 820 people) dates back to the 1930s, when a group of germans reached the Chilean Patagonia, where the state offered free territories for those who wished to work the land. The aim was to attract workers who would bring along their families afterwards. Unfortunately, the Second World War hindered that possibility and just some of them managed to leave Europe a few years after the initial settlement.
Later on, the first chilotes (the inhabitants of Chiloé), hired by the germans, began to arrive. They worked temporarily first and then they settled down with their families, which led to the integration of both cultures.
In late 1989, when the Carretera Austral had more than 2400km of developed road, the town got more easily accessible. Now, Puyuhuapi is one of the must-see stops on the Carretera Austral, with hot-springs and glaciers near by, but also the still very present european influence - notable in its architecture and gastronomy.

The small ferry and questionable wooden bridge led us to an island in a river mouth. There is a small town and a ferry arrives twice a week, but mostly it’s untouched. We spent a couple of days with walks through the dense forest, biking to the beach and observing the wildlife. A local fisherman gave us a fish he had just caught which went perfectly with the freshly baked bread we had made that same day.

A few kilometres later, a narrow bridge takes us across the next river. And now the coast isn’t far away. 😎🌊

Nearly 4 years ago, gave our truck a fresh paint job. Choosing this bold color felt like taking a chance, and to be honest, we were a bit anxious about the outcome. But we still love the result!
The vibrant red truly stands out against any backdrop, and we’d make the same choice again without hesitation.

The Pan-American Highway is one of the legendary overland routes, right up there with Route 66, Cairo to Capetown and the Silk Road.
In Quellón we reached another end (or start) of this road which connects 14 countries over two continents. Did you know that there are 4 starts/ends of this road?

The hike up to Volcán Chaitén was more challenging than we had expected. It’s only 2.3km long (one way) but with a gain of 600m of elevation. It’s not difficult, but climbing the large steps under the scorching sun was pretty tiring.
Reaching the rim of the outer caldera was worth the climb. The view across the caldera to the active volcano is jaw-dropping. Because the volcano is still active, it’s not safe to climb.
Not matter which way we looked, the red gray volcano or the green coast with the blue sea behind; it was worth the hike and we’d do it again…probably with an earlier start though.
…enjoy 📸😎

Chiloe is the largest island in Chile and the fifth-largest in South America.
Once you cross with the ferry from the mainland to the island, life seem to slow down a bit. We spent a whole week on the island, exploring different towns and corners of the island.
Some of the obvious highlights are of course the palafitos, colorful stilt houses which can be found in several island towns, the ones in Castro are probably the most well-known postcard of Chiloé.
Another big tourist attraction are the approximately 70 Chiloé churches, 16 of which have been named UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Crafted entirely from wood in the 17th and 18th centuries, these churches stand as enduring testaments to Chiloé’s rich cultural heritage.
Another highlight for us was when we came upon a small shipyard where they build the wooden fishing boats. In a team of two men, it takes them between 6-8 months to build a ship from scratch. Sadly we only discovered it on our last evening before heading back to the mainland, otherwise we would have stayed a bit longer to learn more about Jose’s craft.

Here are some highlights from our journey through the Región de los Lagos:

- The most memorable camping spot was undoubtedly the one captured in the first image. Right by the lake’s edge, we enjoyed swimming with breathtaking views of the nearby volcanoes.
- Exploring the trails of Puyehue National Park.
- The cute little town Puerto Octay.
- The Pablo Fierro Museum in Puerto Varas.

Crossing back in to Chile once again.
The Paso Cardenal Antonio Samoré is a significant border crossing linking Argentina’s Neuquen province with Chile’s Los Lagos Region. Both regions are beautiful, making it a tough choice on which side of the border to explore.
This time, the drive between the two borders was a highlight itself. With the Puyehue volcano in sight, we drive through the landscape which was destroyed in the eruption of 2011-2012.
The eruption, which occurred from the Cordón Caulle fissure after 51 years of the volcano being inactive, is one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the 21st century so far.
14 days after the start of the eruption, the ash cloud had circumnavigated the globe, dispersing an estimated one hundred million tons of ash, sand, and pumice - equivalent to the power of 70 Hiroshima atomic bombs. Over 3,500 individuals were evacuated from nearby areas, while the ash cloud blanketed cities across the Southern Hemisphere, from Buenos Aires to Wellington, disrupting hundreds of flights and causing travel chaos.
Despite the visible destruction, signs of nature’s resilience emerge, with vibrant young plants growing between the burnt remains of trees.

Taking a break from the road in Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi. ☀️🚣‍♀️😎
When we arrived at the campground, we thought we’d only be staying for one night, but we ended up staying almost for a whole week. It feels good to take breaks from overlanding every now and then. Let all the impressions settle and just chill.
Where was the last place you decided to stay a little while longer?

First impressions of the Conguillio National Park.
The snow-capped cone-shaped volcán Llaima, 3125 m/10250ft high, is one of the iconic attractions of the park.
Llaima is one of the larger and most active volcanoes in Chile. Although the last eruption occurred on April 5th, 2009, the volcano is in a state where the next eruption is anticipated by 2030.
But for now, we’re just going to enjoy the views.
