ℹ️Distanza: 8,4 km , durata indicativa: 3:20 h, salita: 267 m, discesa: 267 m

The 2025 carnival season is here! 🥳🥳
Ticino is getting ready to celebrate carnival: there are over 130 events, some small and local, others much larger with thousands of participants 🥳🥳
Here are some of the main ones:

Nebiopoli, Chiasso: February 12–16
Stranociada, Locarno: February 14–16
Rabadan, Bellinzona: February 27–March 4
Carnevale Biaschese, Biasca: March 5–8
Carnevale Or Penagin, Tesserete: March 6–8
Did you know?

-In Ticino, both the Roman carnival (until Mardi Gras) and the Ambrosian carnival (until the Saturday before Lent) are celebrated.
- Bellinzona’s carnival, called "Rabadan," is the largest in Ticino and dates back to 1862. For five days, the city becomes the kingdom of King Rabadan with parades and music.
- Biasca’s carnival is the oldest in Ticino, first documented in 1465 as an Ambrosian carnival.
- Chiasso’s Nebiopoli carnival, the most important in Sottoceneri, has no king: for four days, the city becomes the Free Republic of Nebiopoli under the rule of a Prime Minister.
- Locarno’s "Stranociada" is a nighttime celebration in the old town, featuring masks, Guggenmusik, and prizes for the best costumes.

Nebiopoli, Chiasso: 12 – 16.02
Stranociada, Locarno: 14 – 16.02
Rabadan, Bellinzona: 27.02 – 04.03
Carnevale Biaschese, Biasca: 05 – 08.03
Carnevale Or Penagin, Tesserete: 06 – 08.03

Did you know that the oldest fully preserved Christian building in Switzerland is located in Ticino?

It’s the Baptistery of Riva San Vitale, dating back to the year 500!
Built with local stone, it has a unique shape: square on the outside and octagonal on the inside. Likely constructed on Roman foundations, it was restored in the 1950s. At its center stands an impressive Romanesque baptismal font made from a single block of Serizzo stone, resting on an even older octagonal basin. The floor is a masterpiece of inlaid marble and geometric patterns, while Romanesque and late Romanesque frescoes adorn the walls, telling centuries of history. A place well worth a visit!

Also in Riva San Vitale, you’ll find the Temple of Santa Croce, one of Switzerland’s most remarkable Renaissance structures (photo 3).
