Au Tree Cafe is finally here!🌺

Excited to announce that the cafe we have been working on for the past year at Go Local has finally opened exclusively to our tour guests!

An underwater world full of vibrant and energetic marine life, a place they call home 🪸🌊🌴🐢

The last couple days our paradise has experienced an immense amount of rain which has caused some challenges to the visibility in our waters. However this is a part of nature and we don’t call the shots on her timing!

Have you noticed the corals in our passages and lagoon? Or ever dived over the reef? The array of different sizes, shapes and colours?! The animals that live in between them?

Our corals are a crucial part of the world’s eco systems, and here in Rarotonga we have noticed a great decline in the health of our beautiful corals. If you are planning on visiting our shores, or jumping on our tours, please do take notice of the surrounding corals when snorkelling or diving in our waters. Don’t touch, stand on or kick when swimming.

Corals provide coastal protection for our island, and marine life, and is something we as a coastal community rely heavily on for different purposes.

Here are three simple ways you can help to reduce your impact on our coral reef:

🪸 Wearing reef safe sunblock or cover up with a rashie! We have a huge number of visitors that visit the Cook Islands and enter our waters annually and a large percentage of those wear sunblock, which means there will be high concentrations of these chemicals entering the water directly impacting coral and fish life. Check the active ingredients on your product, rather than the label “reef safe” a term that many brands use to market themselves and do proper research into what is actually safe!

🪸Observe coral and marine life from a safe distance. Coral are animals and need to be protected. Don’t touch, or stand on them!

🪸Donate or support local programs that are already doing vital restoration work for the coral reef. There are a very small number of locally run NGO’s like the one we are apart of who are actively learning, and actioning coral care activities in the lagoon and reef. It’s important that we are all taking the time to be involved and take responsibility of the place we all come to enjoy that is our ocean, and protect it for our future generations! We’ve had some really beautiful conditions over the last 3 days thanks to the swells which have cleaned out and died down, giving us crystal clear lagoons and passage.

Our turtles have reappeared, taking breaths at the surface and laying low amongst the coral.

Why are turtles so important to us?

They help maintain the health of the coral reef and are a vital part of our ecosystem! Protecting our onu is a very important role we must all play when we are actively in their space.

We love seeing our turtles thrive, and know that when our visitors are able to see them, it can be a life changing experience in the deep water for many. It’s an exchange that we are truly grateful for to be able to witness and spend time in the water with these beautiful animals.

We hope that our tours are not only super fun but informative so our wonderful guests can walk away with knowledge to share further about how we can continually safeguard and share space safely in the ocean with our amazing marine life 🐢🌊
