Antarctica21

Antarctica21 We are the world's first operator of Antarctic air-cruises. With Antarctica21, fly in comfort and skip the stormy Drake Passage!

Antarctica21 came to life over in 2001 based on the idea of developing an air bridge between Punta Arenas, the main urban centre of Chilean Patagonia, and the Antarctic Station President Eduardo Frei Montalva. Very quickly the enormous potential of this innovative concept is revealed in various fields, including tourism, a newborn industry that was in full growth at an international level in those

years. Following a search to mark a difference among the existing options available at the time and setting the challenge of being able to visit Antarctica without suffering the difficulties presented by navigating the “fearful” Drake Passage, a tourism product which joins the advantages of air and maritime transport in a unique and new combination was born. Several strategic partners were contacted in order to develop the concept of Antarctic fly-cruise, such as Aerovías DAP, a regional company with vast experience in flying to the White Continent and international ship owners for chartering an ice-class vessel. At this same time, there begins work in order to comply with the rules required to operate in Antarctica, and a request is made to be incorporated to the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO). Antarctica21 becomes the first Chilean Tour Operator to be a full member of this prestigious association and the first Chilean Tour Company ready to operate in the continent. In 2003 the first air-cruise trip to Antarctica in history takes place. In the following years a wise and careful growth policy has been followed that has meant adding one air-cruise per year, consolidating in this manner a clear vision of the future. The experience obtained has permitted a path of perfecting the various logistical aspects involved. The infrastructure used has also been improved by adding transport material that has made the tours increasingly more efficient. Antarctica21 has gained a high reputation of professionalism and reliability, both nationally and internationally. At present, Antarctica21 continues to be the only operator in the world organizing air-cruises to Antarctica, promoting it’s trips as an exclusive “boutique” product which offers the opportunity of living the memorable experience of a custom-made four-star and environmentally responsible expedition.

In fact, 52% of Antarctica21's workforce members are women! We thank you all today and every day for making the Antarctica21 experience so special.

In March, Antarctica begins its transition from summer to autumn, offering a unique and dramatic landscape. The days grow shorter, and the golden light of the low sun casts a warm glow over icy peaks and glaciers, creating stunning photo opportunities.

The sea ice starts to reform, especially in more sheltered bays, and icebergs drift gracefully through the darkening waters. The snow becomes more present, and there’s a peaceful, almost otherworldly stillness in the air.

Happy International Whale Day! 🐋

🌊 Did you know at least five whale species are commonly found in Antarctica? From the majestic Minke Whale to the acrobatic Humpback Whale, each species plays a vital role in this unique ecosystem.

As we celebrate these incredible creatures, it's essential to acknowledge the rigorous regulations & guidelines in place for Antarctica's conservation, thanks to the Antarctic Treaty and the IAATO's advocacy for safe & environmentally responsible travel in the Last Continent.

While penguins and whales are often the stars of Antarctica’s wildlife show, seabirds are just as enticing. Here are some you could see on an expedition with us in the Antarctic Peninsula or the Sub-Antarctic regions.

🪶Southern Giant Petrel: A large seabird, often mistaken for an albatross, with a distinctive tube-like structure on their beak, used for excreting salt.

🪶Antarctic Petrel: Medium-sized petrel with striking dark brown and white plumage, often seen flying in large flocks.

🪶Snow Petrel: A small white species with black eyes and beak.

🪶South Polar Skua: A robust, brownish seabird with a short tail and strong flight capabilities.

🪶Black-Browed Albatross: A large seabird with a wingspan of up to 2.4 meters (7.9 feet), characterized by a dark eyebrow stripe above its eyes.

Welcome to late summer in Antarctica, when humpback and minke whales are commonly spotted along the Antarctic Peninsula. They love this area due to its abundance of nutrient-rich waters. They are busy fattening up as they eventually prepare for their northward migration to warmer waters for breeding and calving.

On an expedition with us, you may even have the chance to witness humpback whales displaying a unique behavior known as display bubble-net feeding: when they blow underwater bubbles with their blowholes that act like a net, ultimately trapping fish inside and making it easy for them to eat.

“The thing that is most beautiful about Antarctica for me is the light. It’s like no other light on Earth because the air is so free of impurities. You get drugged by it, like when you listen to one of your favorite songs. The light there is a mood-enhancing substance.”- Jon Krakauer

Although these penguins are usually found in colonies located in Antarctica’s interior and can rarely be seen on the Antarctic Peninsula where our trips are operated, we’ve had a few lucky sightings of emperor penguins during one of our expeditions! Did you know they’re the only penguin species to breed during the Antarctic winter? They’re also the largest of all penguin species, standing at an impressive 1.2 meters tall (around 4 feet).

Antarctica’s everchanging landscape offers some of its most delightful vistas in November when nearly 20 hours of daylight shines on its massive glaciers. During this time of year, temperatures range from -5°C to 5°C (23°F to 41°F) — but can change rapidly! You’ll also have the chance to see an abundance of wildlife: bustling penguin colonies, seals lounging on ice floes, and whales returning to the continent to feed on krill.
