ANGELS OF HEALING WHO GO BEYOND THE HIPPOCRATIC OATH -IJ SINGH 10 july 2024 new delhi
In 2013 with the help of a New Delhi hospital and three doctors, I was able to establish a medical consultation post, at the village of Singtali, Uttrakhand where I also maintain an eco lodge on the banks of the upper Ganges.
DR MAJ rtd PRACHI GARG SEEN HERE IN ABOVE IMAGE LOWER RIGHT
One of these young had doctors was a lady who name is Dr (Major. Rtd) Prachi Garg. She had left the service but was already a veteran of the Kargil campaign in the war with Pakistan in the year 1999.
Subsequently, I invited her to re visit as a health consultant for my elderly UK guests with whom a close and enduring friendship has forged.
I watched news of Dr Garg on FB and was amazed at her dynamism , selfless service and accolades from the Government of India’s various Medical Councils and others.
About two years ago, I called Dr Garg for help with an elderly lady’s medical needs and who could not afford expensive treatment. Dr Garg referred me to the Delhi Government’s outpatient OPD hospital in Malviya Nagar and we were delighted at the outcome.
Recently , a few days ago, I again called Dr Garg, as this time, one of my house hold helpers, a young boy of 24 from a very poor background in Uttar Pradesh, was in need of urgent medical intercession for kidney stone removal. The usual hospitals quoted an astronomical amount and I turned to Dr Garg.
In this instance Dr Prachi directed me to another amazing human being, the elderly Dr DPS Toor. Dr Toor headed the Charitable “Rural Medical Centre” in Saiyad Ula Jab” near Mehrauli.
I was so impressed by the facility and the man who steered it with his principal that I probed a bit further. Dr Toor had an awe inspiring tale to tell and one which left a deep impression.
Dr Toor told me that when he began at the Rural Medical Centre thirty three years ago, the patient fee was all of ten rupees. Of this he received Rs 2 and the Centre Rs 8. Today the fee is Rs 200 and the share proportionate.
Dr Toor informed me, that like all good wives, his wife, a school teacher supported him in his endeavour of Seva from the time of their nuptials. Inspite of the fact that his inlaws were well settled in California, land of milk and honey, he informed his in laws to me during the first meeting, that he had no intention of leaving Bharat, and that he was committed to his work. Dr Toor’s philosophy is and has always been “ one needs food to eat, and not much else”.
In this instance for the patient I was informed that the procedure including the doctor’s fees (now there are urologists and specialists who also donate their services, the cost would be limited to Rs 20,000/ This as against upwards of Rs 75,000 at other establishments.
Dr Toor also informed me that in 2020, he lost his son due to cardiac arrest. The loss of this young man (Aman Toor) was a big blow, but Dr Toor and his wife picked themselves up from this terrible tragedy and he got back to aiding the poor.
Inspite of his own modest background, Dr Toor recently donated an ambulance (shown in pic) to the Centre he works for as well as a large water cooler from his own funds.
The photo showing Dr Toor on image right showing his son’s name Aman has one flaw. It is Dr Toor who should be in the limelight.
God Bless doctors and individuals such as Dr DPS Toor and Dr Maj rtd Prachi Garg
