In 2021, Drake's music was streamed more than all music released before 1980! Wow. Impressive stat to think about, but there are a few reasons for this:
• Drake's newest album Certified Lover Boy (Sep 2021) had a large streaming spike in its first few weeks. Meanwhile, songs before 1980 all have steady listening streams at this point
• New music releases are featured heavily streaming playlists, which drive a meaningful percentage of listening
• Hip-hop fans stream music more often than rock and pop fans, who are (relatively) more likely than hip-hop fans to buy physical or digital copies of their favorite artists.
But still, it's a wild stat to think about given all the recent catalog sales from legacy artists from the 1960s and 1970s.
Here's a hypothetical question: If Drake sold 100% of revenue generated from his next album, how much money would he get for it in today's climate with these low interest rates?
(To be clear, this would never happen. He's signed to Republic Records. But it's fascinating to think about).
Thanks Billboard for sharing this stat!
