The Great Wall at Mutianyu is one of the best-preserved sections of the Wall close to Beijing.

Being a scenic section but with fewer tourists than Badaling, Mutianyu Great wall is an ideal introduction to this ancient wonder and especially favored by foreign travelers.

And thanks to its close proximity to downtown Beijing, just a one-and-a-half-hour drive in normal traffic, it is more than possible to visit Mutianyu Great Wall in a morning or afternoon—perfect for travelers with a tight schedule.

Originally built in the 14th century by the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Xi‘an’s large, rectangular city wall is an impressive sight and an unmissable stop on any itinerary in Xi‘an. It is considered the best preserved city wall in China and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Among the four gates of the rectangular wall, the South Gate (also known as Yongning Gate) is the most magnificent and beautifully decorated, and thus is the main gate for visitors to start their tour of the city wall.

The Jinshanling Section of the Great Wall was first constructed during the Ming Dynasty in 1368 and then renovated under the supervision of the great general Qi Jiguang in 1567. This section is around 10.5 km long, including 5 passes, 67 towers, and three beacon towers. Part of the wall has been restored but some of it remains unrestored, offering you the opportunity to appreciate both the original appearance and the wild side of the Great Wall.

Located 125 km northeast of Beijing or around 2.5 hours‘ drive in normal traffic, Jinshanling Great Wall not only offers some of the best sceneries among both restored and unrestored sections of the Great Wall; thanks to the longer drive from Beijing, it also sees far fewer tourists than closer sections like Badaling and Mutianyu. If your itinerary allows for one full day seeing the Great Wall, then we highly recommend Jinshanling.
