Our university's applied economics team recently published a research paper titled "Value of Certification in Collective Reputation Crises: Evidence from Chinese Dairy Firms" in the prestigious international journal "Food Policy." In the food industry, characterized by significant information asymmetry, it becomes crucial to investigate methods for mitigating the adverse spillover effects of crisis events on unsuspecting companies. Consequently, this paper delves into the role of certification, a pivotal tool in alleviating product quality information asymmetry, and systematically examines how it diminishes the negative repercussions of collective reputation crises in the food industry.

At a porridge distribution gathering held in a herbal restaurant in Hangzhou, both local residents and international guests partook in Laba porridge, inscribed auspicious characters, engaged in Yue opera performances, immersing themselves in the essence of the traditional Chinese "Laba Festival." The event provided an opportunity to savor winter delicacies and exchange warm wishes. Numerous foreign attendees voiced their appreciation for Laba porridge, expressing delight and labeling it as "delicious." Nearby, two young students from Pakistan, captivated by the melodies of Yue opera, found themselves unconsciously humming the tunes of their homeland.

Our university's natural product nutrition and health team recently published a comprehensive review titled "Bioactive Components and Biological Activities of Crocus sativus L. Byproducts" in the esteemed Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (District 1 of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, TOP Journal). This research, featured as the cover article, delves into the bioactive constituents and functionalities of saffron by-products. The study identifies key functional elements within saffron by-products, encompassing flavonoids, anthocyanins, carotenoids, phenolic acids, monoterpenes, alkaloids, and saponins. These components exhibit diverse effects, including free radical scavenging, antioxidant stress, anti-inflammatory properties, antibacterial activity, liver protection, antidepressant qualities, and cardiovascular disease prevention.

The 5th Zhejiang International Smart Transportation Industry Expo took place in Hangzhou, with over 10 international students from our university being invited to attend. The expo featured participation from 37 international companies, representing 20 countries and regions, including Russia, the United States, Germany, France, and Spain.
This exhibition introduced an interactive experience area for the first time, simulating key scenarios in sea, land, and air transportation. The students attentively absorbed the instructor's explanations regarding the operational principles of various equipment and new systems, gaining insights into the latest advancements in science and technology.
Moroccan international students engaged in on-site interviews with reporters, expressing their admiration and appreciation for the strides in modern science and technology. The students actively asked questions, demonstrating their keen interest in understanding the rapid developments in contemporary technology. Overall, they found the experience to be highly rewarding and insightful.

Our school received the AFS international cultural exchange project group. These teenagers from different countries such as Italy, Thailand, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Japan and Mongolia had an unforgettable time in Hangzhou together under the supervision of our school.

Recently, Zhejiang University of Science and Technology was officially approved as the "Zhejiang Province International Student National Conditions Education Famous Teacher Studio".
In July 2022, our University was approved as the construction unit of "Zhejiang Provincial International Student National Conditions Education Famous Teacher Studio". During the construction period, the studio opened 7 national conditions education courses, 11 teaching and research topics, and established national conditions education social practice bases in 17 units. Many international students published works in overseas national media, and national conditions education related courses were launched domestically. It has been reported by the media more than 100 times.
In the future, the Studio of Famous Teachers of National Conditions Education for International Students will continue to promote the quality of education for students studying in China, improve the teaching level of national conditions education teachers, and help international students better understand China.

The German Ambassador in China and her delegation visited our university.
Dr. Patricia Flor, the German Ambassador in China, visited the university and was appointed as an honorary professor of our uni.
During her visit, she communicated with representatives of the
"Chinese and foreign teachers" and students currently in the university. She made an exchange speech around the theme of
"Germany-China Relations in the Field of Scientific Research" and looked forward to China and Germany working together to continue promoting bilateral cooperation in education, culture, scientific research and other fields. She encouraged young students from China and Germany to strengthen exchanges, enhance understanding, and become experiencers, practitioners, and disseminators of the friendship between the two countries.
During her visit, Dr. Patricia Flor and her delegation also visited the Sino-German Cooperation Pavilion and the Sino-German Friendship Park of our university, and planted a tree symbolizing the friendship between China and Germany with guests from inside and outside the university.

Our university passed the re-certification: quality of higher education for international students in China.
The 24th China International Education Annual Conference and Exhibition was held at the National Convention Center in Beijing. The China Education International Exchange Association announced that our university has successfully passed the 2023 higher education quality certification for international students in China with excellent results, fully affirming our school’s educational achievements in studying abroad in China.

Teachers from Zhejiang University of Science and Technology published papers in a high-level international journal.
Recently, teachers from our university published a research paper titled “International student mobility as ‘aspiration on the go’: Stories from African students at a Chinese university” in the internationally authoritative journal Higher Education (Q1).
This paper uses a 15-month case study of African students in a Chinese university to explore the process of considering international student mobility as the "aspiration on the go" of international students. This study believes that adopting a dynamic and processual approach is important to rethink the aspirations of international students and is conducive to breaking the inherent thinking in the existing international educational mobility literature.
Higher Education, founded in 1972, is one of the most internationally influential magazines in the field of higher education research.

A Romanian education delegation composed of 10 members visited our university on November 13th. Principal Chen Jianmeng and Vice Principal Li Qipeng received the delegation.
Principal Chen Jianmeng extended a warm welcome to the delegation and introduced the basic situation of our university’s international education. The two parties discussed cooperation in teacher-student exchanges, scientific research cooperation and joint training. The meeting was attended by the university International Office leaders and the Confucius Institute in Cluj-Napoca. Principal Chen Jianmeng expressed his hope to deepen mutual understanding and exchanges with Romanian universities, explore the possibility of more cooperation and contribute to promoting China-Romania educational cooperation and cultural exchanges.

Zhejiang University of Science and Technology International students experiencing Chinese youth culture up close.

On November 4th, Zhejiang University of Science and Technology launched a course on collecting Chinese social practice and organized 27 international students from 12 countries to go to Hangzhou Nangongxiu Intangible Cultural Heritage Fashion Design Center to carry out Chinese children's cultural learning and experience activities.
The General Manager of Nangongxiu Intangible Cultural Heritage Fashion Design Center Wang Wei, told the international students from different part of the world about the history and culture of the Chinese silk. Under the guidance of technicians, international students were able to experience gold embroidery, wear traditional costumes with exquisite patterns, tie ribbons, and hold round fans.

The Chinese Youth Culture Experience Course not only helped international students understand Chinese youth craftsmanship, but also allowed international students to understand Chinese traditional clothing culture and craftsman spirit in practice.

On October 26th, the 24th China International Education Annual Meeting and Exhibition was held at the Beijing National Convention Center. At the meeting, the China Education Association for International Exchange announced the results of the quality certification for international students studying in China for higher education in 2023. Our school passed the certification with excellent results, valid for six years. Liu Limin, the president of the China Education Association for International Exchange and former deputy minister of the Ministry of Education, awarded the certification to our school. Vice-Chancellor Li Qipeng attended the meeting and represented our school in the award ceremony.

The quality certification for international students studying in China for higher education is an assessment of the quality of education for international students in China, carried out by the China Education Association for International Exchange as a third-party evaluation institution on behalf of the Ministry of Education. Passing this certification is not only an affirmation and recognition of our school's achievements in educating international students in China but also a diagnosis and evaluation of our school's development in this field. Our school will use the certification as an opportunity to continuously adhere to the principle of "stable growth in scale, optimizing structure, improving quality, and standardized management", promote the high-quality development of education for international students in our school, and strengthen the "Study in Zhejiang University" educational brand.

Recently, Prof. Hans Orth, the head of Chinese affairs for the German Universities International Cooperation Federation (DHIK), and his delegation visited our school. Vice-principal Li Qipeng warmly received the German guests. Li Qipeng first briefly introduced our school's international education characteristics and the history of Sino-German cooperative education to Professor Orth and his delegation. He expressed gratitude to Professor Orth for his continuous attention and support towards our school's Sino-German collaboration as the head of Chinese affairs for DHIK. He hopes to further expand the breadth and depth of cooperation between the two parties through DHIK, efficiently and steadily promoting the future development of the Sino-German Engineering Institute. Officials from the International Office and the Sino-German Engineering Institute attended the talks. During the visit, the delegation also held a discussion and exchange with the Sino-German Engineering Institute. The German Universities International Cooperation Federation (DHIK) is a higher education alliance composed of 38 top research universities from Germany and Switzerland. Li Guoneng's research team at Zhejiang University of Science and Technology published a paper in May 2023 issue of "Engineering," the journal of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, titled "Development of High-Power Portable Biomass Combustion-Driven Thermoelectric Generators." The paper points out that generating electricity through biomass combustion is an essential method for addressing basic needs such as lighting, communication, and healthcare in impoverished areas. The article developed and tested a high-power portable biomass combustion-driven thermoelectric generator (BCP-TEG) and studied its temperature distribution, power load characteristics, and efficiency at various levels, in addition to field application tests. The study found that this thermoelectric generator can produce 750 W of thermal power and 23.4 W of electricity simultaneously under its own weight of 7.6 kg, with a combined heat and power efficiency of 32.3%. The net power density of the thermoelectric generator is 2.41 W·kg−1, higher than all reported results based on closed-cycle cooling in the literature. Additionally, the energy produced by burning 1 kg of wood using the developed thermoelectric generator can fully charge a 3.7 V lithium battery with a capacity of 6.2 A·h. Finally, the paper discussed in detail the issues in the BCP-TEG research area and potential directions for future research.

Recently, Mr. Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee, visited Hangzhou to attend the opening ceremony of the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games and related activities. Our school, as the reception team designated by the International Olympic Committee delegation, successfully completed the reception tasks.

During his stay in Hangzhou, Mr. Zhao Dongfu, the secretary of the Party Committee of our school and the head of the reception team, introduced to Mr. Bach, the current president of the International Olympic Committee, the history and features of our school's cooperation with German universities of applied sciences. He also presented bamboo weaving artworks created by our faculty and students. Mr. Bach highly praised the history of Sino-German cooperation in our school and gave high praise to the artworks crafted by our faculty and students. He expressed heartfelt thanks to our school's reception team for their warm, thoughtful, and meticulous hospitality and services during his participation in the Hangzhou Asian Games activities.

Bamboo weaving is a Chinese national intangible cultural heritage. Our faculty and students' related works have won the German iF Design Award. The artwork gifted to Mr. Bach is titled "Connected Paths", depicting the iconic building of Zhejiang University of Science and Technology – the Student Activity Center. As a university with nearly 40 years of Sino-German cooperative education history, the artwork conveys the beautiful implication of the blending and mutual connection of Chinese and German cooperation.

As the Mid-Autumn Festival approached, field trip-led course named "Explore China" by the International Students' National Education Master Workshop and the School of International Education, provided a unique course on Mid-Autumn Festival, a festival for family reunion and an intangible cultural heritage in China. 24 international students from Tanzania, Thailand, Indonesia, Mongolia, and Morocco made mooncakes, feeling the charm of the traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival.

Guo Mengfan, the head of Yuhang Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum in Hangzhou, gave international students a lively presentation on the history, traditional customs, legendary stories, and various types of Mid-Autumn mooncakes, enabling the international students to deeply understand the cultural significance of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Flattening the dough, enclosing the filling, rounding the dough, shaping with molds.... Under Teacher Guo's hands-on guidance, the international students, equipped appropriately, followed the steps to make mooncakes into shapes of "waking lion", "rabbit", and "cherry blossom". The classroom was filled with laughter and cheerful voices and everyone was immersed in the festive atmosphere.

On July 6th, Professor Yang Zhongyong, the Dean of Sabah Institute of Arts in Malaysia, and his delegation visited our university. Both parties had an in-depth discussion on the development plan of "ZUST-SIA Silk Road International College" and engaged in detailed negotiations regarding the construction of the Silk Road International Education Alliance framework, academic programs for degree-seeking students at the Silk Road International College, international Chinese teacher programs, MUET examination cooperation, and other relevant matters.

"ZUST-SIA Silk Road International College" was jointly established by our university and Sabah Institute of Arts in Malaysia in December 2020. It is one of the first 29 "Silk Road Colleges" in our province. The college has already launched skill training courses in 3D printing technology and a joint education program for upgrading from diploma to bachelor's degree in environmental design.

"ZUST-SIA Silk Road International College" actively responds to the talent demand arising from the implementation of China's "Belt and Road" strategy. Starting from 2021, General Administration of Sport, National Development and Reform Commission, and Ministry of Culture and Tourism jointly launched "Walking Along the Grand Canal" activity for the protection, inheritance, and promotion of the Grand Canal culture and explore new modes for the integration of national fitness, sports, and cultural tourism. The activity this year took place in 8 provinces and cities along the Grand Canal, including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong, Anhui, Henan, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. As one of the main venues nationwide, Hangzhou Linping district organized the activity on Linping Grand Canal Greenway, with two routes available: the 10-kilometer route runs from Donghu North Road Bridge to Tangqi Ancient Town on the Grand Canal, and the 4.2-kilometer route from Quanzhang Bus Terminal to Tangqi Ancient Town on the Grand Canal. On May 7th, 2023, ZUST international students were invited for participation, during which, they successfully completed the full 10-kilometer route while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the canal. Step outside and take a deep breath - the air is filled with the sweet aroma of blooming flowers and the gentle hum of buzzing insects. Today it marks the beginning of summer and the traditional Chinese solar term of 'Lixia - 立夏', a time of great change and renewal in nature.
As the sun rises higher in the sky and the days grow longer, we feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for all the adventures and experiences this season will bring!
