Mr. Song Zhiheng, deputy director of the Science and Technology Department of Zhejiang Province, declared that the first batch of COVID-19 vaccine has produced antibodies and entered the stage of animal testing. Culturing of the recombinant adenovirus vector vaccine has begun, and animal experiments will be carried out in the near future.

The virus has been screened to the 4th generation in Zhejiang Province.

On January 30th, 2020, a research team of Xiamen University, led by Professor Li Qingge, successfully developed an all-in-one machine for field detection of novel coronavirus, which can automatically process testing and give the report in about an hour after putting samples in it.

On January 31st, 2020, in response of requirements of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Civil Aviation Administration of China has decided to send two chartered flights, which will be carried out by Xiamen Airlines, to fly Wuhan tourists home who were stranded in Bangkok of Thailand and Kota Kinabalu of Malaysia.

At 14:00 on January 31st, 2020, a total of 120 cases have been confirmed in Fujian Province.

To effectively prevent and control the epidemic, protect the health of entry and exit personnel, and maintain entry and exit order, the National Immigration Administration has adjusted the exit and entry administration regulations.



Q: Are foreigners allowed to enter and leave the country normally during the epidemic prevention and control of pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus?



A: At present, except the Wuhan port remains closed, the administrations of exit/entry affairs at all levels in China are in normal operation. The visa free policy for foreigners has not been adjusted. Foreigners can enter and leave the country normally at the ports by presenting valid exit and entry documents.



Q: How do foreigners apply for visa extension and residence permit during the epidemic prevention and control of pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus?



A: During the epidemic prevention and control period, the administrations of exit/entry affairs at all levels will continue to provide visa extension and residence permit processing services for foreigners, so as to ensure that foreigners can stay legally. Special channels will be opened for individual case examination and approval for those who have emergencies during this period. To avoid the crowds, foreigners can contact the local PSB for the visa application appointment.



Q: What about the expiration of visas and residence permits for foreigners during the epidemic prevention and control period?



A: According to China’s Exit-Entry Administration Law, foreigners should leave the country before the expiration of his/her visa and residence permit. Those who need a longer stay in China should go to the local PSB to extend his/her visa and residence permit. Given the relevant laws and regulations and the current situation, if it is difficult to leave the country on time and unable to handle the visa and residence permit extension in time due to the epidemic prevention and control, the immigration administration may, in accordance with the law and regulations, reduce or exempt the penalty of overdue residence.

On December 28th, 2019, the Chinese Football Association announced that Xiamen will be one of ten host cities for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, which will be held in June and July in ten cities across China.

This year will be the 18th time the AFC Asian Cup has been held. The ten host cities for the event are Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Chongqing, Chengdu, Xi'an, Dalian, Qingdao, Xiamen, and Suzhou. The event will feature 24 teams competing in 51 high-level games.

The AFC Asian Cup is an international association football tournament run by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). It is the second-oldest continental football championship in the world after Copa América.

According to the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Sports, a new sports center will be built for the event in Liuwudian in Xiang'an District.

Xiamen is No. 3 on list of China's top-10 most livable cities for 2019

The ranking was jointly conducted by the Institute of Economics at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and the Asia Competitiveness Institute at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

According to a report released by the Ministry of Ecological Environment on December 13th, 2019, Xiamen took fifth place out of 168 major cities nationwide.

No. 1 in assessment results of business environment at China’s top 10 maritime container ports
Xiamen was followed by Qingdao and Guangzhou (Huangpu excluded). The assessment was mainly based on five indicators, including cost index of cross-border trade ports, aging index of cross-border trade ports, regulatory environment index, commercial services index, and scores of other supporting facilities.

Among China's top 10 "smart cities"
According to results released during the 2019 Smart China Annual Conference in Beijing in November, Xiamen was named together with Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Ningbo, Nanjing, Foshan, and Chengdu as among China’s top 10 smart cities.

Xiamen also won an Innovation Demonstration Award in the 2019 China's Smart Cities awards.

Xiamen's new footpath, a route that stretches about 23 kilometers long and includes footpaths, elevated walkways, and footbridges, was officially named Xiamen Mountain Ocean Health Footpath /厦门山海健康步道, and will open to the public on January 1st, 2020.

The network of footpaths will help to bring the city's residents and visitors into the mountains and connect the vibrant cityscape with the surrounding natural landscape.
