🎶 Have you noticed the song of the Thick-billed Euphonia? A Small Bird with a Big Voice!

Found all over Colombia, the Thick-billed Euphonia is a true example of how beauty and talent come in small packages. 🌟 Skilled mimics, they can copy the sounds of other birds, creating a unique symphony of songs and calls.

These birds love to travel in pairs or small groups, often joining mixed flocks with tanagers to forage for fruits and berries. 🍇 When it comes to nesting, both males and females pitch in to build intricate, hidden nests near the ground or high in trees—talk about teamwork! 🐣

✨ With its glossy blue feathers and bright yellow belly, the male Thick-billed Euphonia is a stunning sight, while the females charm with their subtler olive and yellow hues.

🎤 (𝘌𝘶𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘴) Their name, Euphonia, speaks to their “excellence of tone,” while “laniirostris” hints at their strong beak, perfect for tearing into delicious fruits. Whether perched high in a tree or flitting through gardens, these little birds are a joy to spot.

Keep an ear out for their melodic tunes next time you’re exploring Colombia’s lush landscapes! 🎵🌳

Spot the Ringed Kingfisher: Nature’s Aerial Acrobat! ✨🌿

This is the largest kingfisher in Colombia! This bird is a master hunter, diving from high perches to catch fish in rivers and lakes 🐟 Its diet? A delicious mix of fish, frogs, and even the occasional insect or reptile. Talk about a versatile hunter!🦎

With a name rooted in Greek mythology and Latin poetry, this bird is as fascinating linguistically as it is visually. “Megaceryle” combines “mega” (large) with “ceryle,” a mythical bird , while “torquata” means “collared” – a perfect nod to its distinctive appearance. 🤔

A very good example of a partnership in nature! Male and female Ringed Kingfisher take turns incubating their eggs. It’s a team effort to raise the next generation. The chicks emerge from their riverbank nests after just over a month, ready to explore their watery world. 🐣

Keep your eyes peeled near water bodies – you might just spot one perched high on a branch, watching the water with laser focus, ready to dive in for its next meal! 💦👀

Did you know the Green-and-Black Fruiteater (Pipreola riefferii) is a cotinga? 🐦 This stunning bird, found at elevations ranging from 900m to 2700m above sea level in the mountain ranges of Colombia, graces the subtropical and tropical moist montane forests with its presence.

🎶 Listen closely to its enchanting song—a high-pitched «ts-s-s-s-s-s-s» that dances through the air, slowing and fading like a gentle breeze.

🫐🪱 As a frugivore, it delights in feasting on a variety of fruits, and occasionally, it indulges in a savory snack of animal origin.

🪺 From January to July, it crafts its nest among the moss and roots, gently cradling its precious clutch of two cream-colored eggs with reddish-brown speckles.

📣🆕🚨🔔 BREAKING NEWS again!
*The Magdalena Tinamou (Crypturellus erythropus saltuarius) was just rediscovered for Tolima department (Colombia) after more than 230 years!*
Only known in Tolima by historical accounts (more than 2 centuries old!) from the "Royal Botanical Expedition to the New Kingdom of Granada", then collected in Cesar by Carriker in 1943 (same guy that collected the Bearded Bellbird that was also just re-discovered in Colombia!), and a few records without any evidence in the last decade or so...
These kind of crazy re-discoveries only happen, and so often!, in Colombia and we couldn't be more excited living and birding in a country like this! - vocal and genetical analyses in the future might prove this subspecies (saltuarius) deserves species status and would become another Colombian dramatically range-restricted endemic.
CONGRATULATIONS to Anthocephala - Asociación Tolimense de Ornitología, to Tolima, and to the local researchers that found this jewel! - photo by Hernán Arias
