🦅🌿 3 Endangered Birds in Colombia!
Colombia is home to many impressive birds that are endangered. Here we present three of them and the reasons for their critical situation:
1. Harpy Eagle.
Deforestation and habitat loss due to agriculture and livestock farming are the main threats to this majestic bird. Poaching also contributes to its decline.
2. Yellow-eared Parrot.
This parrot depends on wax palm forests, which are being destroyed for agricultural use. Capture for the pet trade and hunting are also significant factors in its decline.
3. Buffy helmetcrest.
It is endangered in Colombia mainly due to habitat destruction in the páramos caused by agricultural and mining activities, the effects of climate change that alter its food sources, and its restricted geographical distribution that increases its vulnerability

Our first day at Hato Barley in the 'Llanos' of Colombia was spectacular: capibaras, deer, caiman, wild hogs, and several species of birds including these curious Burrowing Owls. And all before even reaching the gate to the house 😅 Plus a magnificent sunset to end the day.
The beauty of the 'Llanos' or Savanna beyond the Andes in Colombia is really unique. A one in a lifetime experience worth to have.

Literature describes the enigmatic Sapayoa as an elusive, rare, uncommon hence hard to see bird found In lowland rainforests living near ravines and small streams in the Western Andes Cordillera. Clearly this individual found by our super skilful guide last week in San Cipriano is not at all aware of literature 😅 Interestingly, Sapayoa is the sole member in its own family and has no close relatives in the Americas; it is most closely related to Asian broadbills 🤯 We go after this marvel as part of Icaro Birding Epic Andes Tour, happening several times a year.
