We just returned from an amazing trip with , and Andrew Hood to one of the premier birding hotspots in the Amazon region of Colombia: Mitú. This renowned location is home to numerous specialties of Terra Firme and White-Sand forests. Here are some highlights from our day in Pueblo Nuevo, a fantastic spot for Terra Firme specialties in Mitú:

1. Chestnut-crested Antbird, one of the most sought-after birds in Mitú.
2. Banded Antbird, a shy and elusive terrestrial bird that sometimes exposes well enough for a photo.
3. Ringed Antpipit.
4. The Vaupés river
5. Mitú is part of the ancient Guianan shield, one of the oldest geological regions of the world.

The mega-endemic Gold-ringed Tanager (Bangsia aureocincta) is one of Colombia's most iconic birds. This tanager inhabits a very small range in the Western Andes, restricted to very humid, mossy cloud forests, making it a highly sought-after species for every birder visiting Colombia. Additionally, this Bangsia tanager has a profound connection with The Andean Birder, as it has been the image of their logo since the company's inception 10 years ago.

The endemic Santa Marta Warbler (Myiothlypis basilica) is one of our key targets on the Caribbean Coast and Santa Marta Mountains Birding trip. This warbler can be elusive and challenging to photograph, as it often prefers the dense, tangled habitat of chusquea bamboo.

Photographing a Long-billed Gnatwren is always a challenge. These tiny birds are constantly on the move, darting through dense vegetation as they use their long bills to catch insects.

Antpittas of Colombia 4/4

Welcome to the final part of our short series on Colombia's antpittas. In this post, we feature one of the country’s rarest and most restricted endemic species, a newly discovered, yet undescribed species from the Central Andes, and three more commonly seen antpittas. All of these birds can currently be photographed at various locations along the Colombian Andes.

Photos by

1. Urrao Antpitta (Grallaria urraoensis) – This recently described species is found only in the northernmost tip of the Western Andes, particularly in the Dusky Starfrontlet Proaves Reserve, where this photo was taken earlier this year.

2. 'Paisa' Antpitta (Grallaria sp. nov.) – A newly identified but yet-to-be-described species from the Los Llanos del Cuiba plateau, north of Medellín. It is currently visiting two feeders in the Montañerito Paisa reserve (Antioquia Brushfinch Reserve), where this shot was captured.

3. Equatorial Antpitta (Grallaria saturata) – The most common of the old 'Rufous' Antpitta complex in Colombia. This individual was photographed at

4. Tawny Antpitta (Grallaria quitensis) – Frequently seen at feeders in the Termales del Ruiz hotel and easily found in several locations throughout the Central Andes of Colombia.

5. Chestnut-crowned Antpitta (Grallaria ruficapilla) – Likely the first antpitta to visit feeders in Colombia, this species has been regularly photographed at , where multiple generations have been coming to the same feeder since 2005.

Antpittas of Colombia 3/4

In this third installment of the series, we feature five species of antpittas. Four belong to the typical Grallaria genus, and one, the Streak-chested Antpitta (Hylopezus perspicillatus), belongs to the Hylopezus genus, found in the lowlands of western and eastern Colombia. Of these five species, the Streak-chested Antpitta is the only one that doesn’t visit feeders, making it particularly challenging to photograph well.

1. Bicolored Antpitta (Grallaria rufocinerea). A near endemic species restricted to the Central Andes of Colombia and the very north of the Andes in Ecuador. Photo in
2. Scaled Antpitta (Grallaria guatimalensis). A more widespread antpitta but one of the most difficult to keep in feeders. Photo in
3. Chestnut-naped Antpitta (Grallaria nuchalis). Photo in
4. White-bellied Antpitta (Grallaria hypoleuca). Only one place is actually feeding this one:
5. Streak-chested Antpitta (Hylopezus perspicillatus). A really difficult one photographed this year at San Cipriano in the Pacific Coast.

Antpittas of Colombia 2/4

Today, in our series on the Antpittas of Colombia, we’ll explore the tiny Grallariculas, a smaller and less terrestrial version of the larger Grallaria antpittas. Grallariculas are often recognized by their intriguing shoulder movement, which resembles a dance and is frequently displayed. These birds inhabit dense, thick underbrush across various elevations in all three of Colombia’s mountain ranges, as well as the Santa Marta Mountains in the north.

1. Crescent-faced Antpitta (Grallaricula lineifrons) the cutest of this group.
2. Hooded Antpitta (Grallaricula cuculata) a true rarity.
3. Ochre-breasted Antpitta (Grallaricula flavirostris).
4. Slate-crowned Antpitta (Grallaricula nana).
5. Rusty-breasted Antpitta (Grallaricula ferrugineipectus).

Antpittas of Colombia, 1/4.

Antpittas are one of our favorite bird groups. Their remarkable ability to stay hidden, their often restricted distribution, and their rarity make them highly sought after by birders and photographers alike.

Today, we’re excited to share with you a short series of photos showcasing these iconic Neotropical birds. Most of these images were made possible thanks to nature reserves that have set up feeding stations, allowing us to observe and enjoy these elusive species up close.

Part 1: ENDEMIC ANTPITTAS

1. Santa Marta Antpitta (Grallaria bangsi). Endemic to the Santa Marta mountains of Colombia.
2. Sierra Nevada Antpitta (Grallaria spatiator). Endemic to the Santa Marta mountains of Colombia.
3. Chami Antpitta (Grallaria alvarezi). Endemic to the Western Andes of Colombia.
4. Brown-banded Antpitta (Grallaria milleri). Endemic to the Central Andes of Colombia.
5. Cundinamarca Antpitta (Grallaria kaestneri). Endemic to the Eastern Andes of Colombia in a very small area.

The Giant Snipe is a rare, nocturnal bird found in fragmented areas of northern Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, and the Guianas. It inhabits swampy areas, wet pastures, and flooded grasslands up to 2200m. As its name suggests, it's the largest in its genus.

The queen of the forest, the powerful Harpy Eagle. Just a few days ago, we were lucky enough to spot this incredible bird at one of the top locations in Colombia. After only a one-kilometer walk, we enjoyed an impressive, eye-level view from just 40 meters away. This has been the most successful Harpy Eagle nest in Colombia's recent birding history.

This unforgettable experience was made possible thanks to the dedicated efforts of the team at Orinoco Nature Tours, Fundación Camaná, and the people of Vereda La Argentina in Mesetas, Meta.
