The 2019 planting season has come and gone. It will still rain for two more months but the new trees need time to establish their roots to withstand the coming dry season. This year we planted 12,000 native trees from 122 species. Half of our time was again spent fighting back the invasive African Cow Grass that has been established here for 40 years.

It might be difficult to see but Steven and Juan found this ocelot track on the dirt Juan excavated yesterday for our replanting. I saw an ocelot about 25 meters from this spot just a few months ago.

First day of the 2018 planting season at Finca Aguas Buenas. The toughest job is definitely lugging the trees from the vivero to the planting site!

Steven and I went for a quick seed collecting run before I traveled back to Kentucky. We have roughly 50 kilos of guapinol in the truck bed. The remaining species were mostly the same as the last month but we found three new species of guaba (Inga spp.) in Jalisco, Maiz Abajo and Los Ángeles. The monkeys really love guabas so they are a significant target for us.

Steven Gamboa and I made the long trip to Rio Piro on the Osa Penninsula to visit the fine folks at the Osa Conservation Foundation. They are doing some very interesting work with balsa on reforestation plots. They also have a large vivero and it was fun to compare methods. Despite the long distance, we shared a surprising number of species.

Below is one of their staff, Hillary, who will be implementing a riparian zone restoration project that travels from forest to pasture and into the tidal zone. It looked like an excellent project with enormous potential for success!
