Club Med Unveils New Environmental Conservation Programs and More

In honor of Earth Month, Club Med, the pioneer of the all-inclusive concept, announced several new corporate sustainability responsibility (CSR) commitments as part of its Happy to Care program for Earth Month and beyond. With the core value that sustainability is part of the travel journey, Club Med continues to establish nature conservation programs focused on protecting local environments and furthering both sustainable and regenerative tourism, while engaging guests and local youth through fun and educational workshops.

Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda: in partnership with local organizations and environmental groups, this resort continues to spearhead pioneering biodiversity protection initiatives that foster sustainable tourism practices while safeguarding the Dominican Republic’s natural treasures.

Protortuga: A sea turtle monitoring and protection program established in 2023 through a collaboration between PROMICHES (Hotel and Tourism Association El Seibo-Miches) and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Protortuga aims to create optimal conditions for sea turtle reproduction on the beaches of Miches and La Vacama. In its inaugural year, the Miches Sea Turtle Monitoring and Protection Program monitored 30 miles of coastal area, safely released 728 baby turtles, and engaged over 380 participants in environmental workshops. With three identified species of sea turtles to protect—Leatherback, Green and Carey—Protortuga plays a crucial role in both conservation efforts, having registered 1,399 turtle eggs to date and creating the link between tourism and environmental conservation in the Dominican Republic.

The Peregrine Fund: Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda partnered with non-profit organization, The Peregrine Fund, to raise awareness of endangered species endemic in the Dominican Republic via a hands-on workshop at the resort. During the session, guests and staff learned about the endangered Ridgeway Hawk, unraveling its pivotal role in the Dominican Republic’s ecosystem. The session also shed light on The Peregrine Fund’s remarkable conservation efforts and allowed the group to forge real connections with two rescued hawks—Leo, a small Ridgeway Hawk, and Amazona, a Redtail Hawk. The Peregrine Fund, established in 1970, leads one of the most successful programs in the world dedicated to the conservation of birds of prey and their habitat. Their Ambassador Hawks initiative integrates birds of prey that are unable to return to the wild into impactful environmental educational programs. The collaborative workshop at Club Med Michès raised nearly $4,000 and is part of an ongoing financial commitment Club Med has made to the organization.

Club Med Columbus has teamed up with local scuba provider Only Blue Diving to organize a three-day Mini Sea Camp for teens of San Salvador Island, a marine reserve protected since 2002 by the Bahamian government. The camp consists of snorkeling with sea animals, coral identification and lessons on the Bahamas’ most precious resource to raise awareness of reef preservation and the education of marine ecosystems. In 2024, Club Med Columbus has committed to hosting a monthly Mini Sea Camp with the goal of providing the beneficial experience for local teens.

Club Med Columbus will expand environmental support through its partnership with Only Blue in its launch as an official NGO: Only Blue for Reef. This partnership’s creation includes building three coral reef nurseries and restoring a major fish habitat. Both will be accessible by beginner divers, providing a hands-on experience to understand the importance of protecting these beautiful natural environments. In addition, divers can also play a part in protecting the coral via a new “Adopt a Coral” program where they will attach their “adopted” fragment of coral from the nursery to an artificial reef, under the supervision of a marine biologist.

Only Blue is a committed and eco-responsible center, active in the preservation of the oceans and the marine environment of San Salvador. In addition to the Mini Sea Camps, Only Blue offers training programs delivered by certified instructors including Coral Reef Conservation, Sea Turtle Awareness, Shark Conservation, Dive Against Debris and more. Only Blue Diving provides scuba and dive packages for Club Med guests of all skill levels that include equipment, courses and excursions on eco-responsible boats.

Club Med also has announced its membership in the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance , demonstrating a formal commitment to industry-wide environmental sustainability and the pursuit of Net Positive Hospitality. With Club Med's extensive experience in sustainable development and innovation, the alliance, a global consortium representing over 50,000 properties, aims to leverage its expertise to further advance sustainable practices within the hospitality sector. Club Med's dedication to creating harmonious and nature-immersed experiences for travelers is underscored by its long-standing commitment to sustainable practices, with a significant portion of its resorts meeting globally recognized BREEAM standards and holding "Green Globe" certification.

Club Med's proactive environmental initiatives, such as the "Bye Bye Plastic" program aimed at the minimization of single-use plastics from its resorts, exemplify its dedication to environmental stewardship. Bye Bye Plastic Program: Club Med North America resorts are working toward the minimization of single-use plastics with biodegradable and glass alternatives, including Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda’s onsite water bottling plant, which provides guests in-room glass refillable bottles that saves over 60,000 plastic bottles each year.

💜💜 Alzheimer Awareness Week

Someone once said if you take care of someone with dementia you lose them more and more everyday. When they get the diagnosis, when they go through different stages, when they need treatment and when they pass away. This is called "ambigua loss".
I don't wish dementia on anyone. As the brain slowly dies, they change physically and eventually forget who their loved ones are. They could end up lying in bed, not moving and not eating or drinking.
There will be people who will scroll past this post because Dementia has not touched them (yet). They may not know what it's like to have a loved one who has battled or is still battling dementia.
To raise awareness of this cruel disease, I would like my friends to put this on their page today.

If getting your Nexus card is on your list, get that application in!

The price of crossing the border more easily is about to jump.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says the NEXUS program it operates in conjunction with U.S. Customs and Border Protection could soon cost more than double today’s price. The CBSA says work is underway to increase the NEXUS application fee from $50 USD to $120 USD effective October 1, 2024, subject to approval of regulatory amendments in the United States and Canada.

The current fee, set more than 20 years ago, no longer covers the cost of the program, officials said.

The new fee would reflect more accurately the cost of administrating the program and the investment required for future program improvements, including technology and infrastructure enhancements. The increased price would work out to US$24 per year for the five-year membership.

Officials said the proposed price hike would help keep up with the high demand for the program and continue to improve the program.

“Since April 2023, we have received over 510,000 applications and completed almost 10,000 interviews every two weeks,” they said.

Applicants are encouraged to book their interview as soon as possible. Appointments are always available on the Trusted Traveller Programs System. Many enrolment centres offer next-day availability for scheduling interviews, allowing applicants to book their appointments quickly.

In anticipation of an increase in demand between now and October, the CBSA and U.S. CBP remain ready to process applications and will continue to make interviews available.

Over the past year, the CBSA and U.S. CBP have:

Reduced the inventory of NEXUS interviews by 25% since July 2022.
Expanded hours of service at enrolment centres in both Canada and the U.S. to increase the availability of interview appointments.
Introduced split interviews at land enrolment centres, offering additional interview options for applicants.
Reopened Canadian airport enrolment centres for two-step interviews.
Provided flexibility for applicants to complete the interview process, while encouraging them to complete their interviews as soon as possible.
Quick facts

Applicants who have submitted their application and paid the US$50 fee, but have not completed their enrolment interviews by October 1, 2024, will not have to pay the proposed US$120 fee.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines opened its doors yesterday, on March 27, with a view straight to the Caribbean, welcoming its first guests to a nature-forward experience brimming with island inspiration and “Sandals Firsts.” The opening marks Sandals Resorts’ eagerly anticipated introduction to the largely undiscovered Eastern Caribbean destination of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, where—enveloped by a mountain backdrop—the brand’s 18th all-inclusive resort offers a sanctuary where guests can commune with nature, foster wellness, and cultivate lasting connections.

Off site, guests can spend time at the foot of a towering waterfall, lie on volcanic black sand beaches, sail the clear blue seas and see abundant marine life during Sandals’ unlimited scuba diving program. Guests will find balance and serenity at Red Lane Spa, offering the soothing ambiance of flowing water and lush greenery, and treatments that harness the natural minerals found in volcanic sand to exfoliate and detoxify.

Eleven culinary concepts—five new to the Sandals brand—showcase the island’s bounties. Guests can dine at Buccan, an immersive family-style, open-air culinary journey and the region’s first-ever solid fuel restaurant. The cooking style in local clay yabba pots becomes a centerpiece of the experience, turning local cedar and sustainable sources like coconut husks into coal as chefs rely on ancient culinary techniques to create a menu highlighting local “Vincy” ingredients with seasonal platters designed for sharing.

Another restaurant, Scrimshaw, taps into the island's abundant access to fresh seafood from the coastal shelf, featuring curry conch fritters with a liquid center; scallops with pickled, locally grown peanuts; and a vegan roasted pumpkin with lemongrass-tofu puree, spiced pumpkin seeds and red onion relish. A sophisticated cocktail menu features the Scrimshaw Martini, finished with a dash of MSG for a unique umami experience to accompany fresh seafood dishes, and the Gin Tonica, a botanical excursion in a glass adorned with citrus wheels, rosemary pimento vermouth and lime.

Parisol, an open-air beach club and kitchen, invites guests to salute the morning sun with smoothies that incorporate the viral superfood sea moss; naturally gluten-free cassava flour pancakes; and locally loved ‘Bakes” with salted fish and guava jam. Day time bites are to be savored by the sea: from the tuna & charred cucumber aguachile to the snapper, skipjack, conch or lobster, served grilled, steamed or fried, and accompanied by lemongrass rice and ginger cabbage slaw. Imoro, a Sandals First “grab-and-go” concept, is named after the Arawak term for “green,” serving up healthy, veggie-focused bowls.

Vincy evenings come alive after the stunning sunset with music furnished by a curated selection of hand-picked vinyl records, Three Jewels rum bar celebrates a quintessentially local Caribbean spirit, with a selection of 32 rums inspired by the destination’s 32 islands within 32 miles. More than two-thirds of the menu hones in on Eastern Caribbean distilled rums, one of five bars around the resort.

In celebration of the opening, guests who book a stay by April 17, 2024 for travel through Jan. 31, 2025 will receive an air credit of up to $1,500 Sandals Saint Vincent and The Grenadines.
