3 hours in Nicaragua is the minimum but sometimes there are still discussion if you want to go back after 5 hours. Reason is that the stamp in your passport does not have a time on it. So the only thing the Nicaraguan border checkpoint knows is who is on shift when. But does not know at what time during one officers shift you entered.
I always get a receipt from a store with a date and time stamp to show the official that I came earlier then he/she might think. Saves you from trouble!!

Border runs. They're a pain in the wallet for perpetual tourists and immigrants waiting for their residency in Costa Rica. But how long do you have to be out of the country to renew a Costa Rica tourist visa? It’s time to set this straight for the record.
